Is there somewhere that you would not return to? And why?

Just commented on a post asking for places you would go back to and why. Thought it would be interesting to find out places you would never go back and why not. Not trying to cause offence! I'm going to get flamed arent I?

Mine are:

Amsterdam. Just found it a big unfriendly city. Away from canals, the buildings are pretty ugly. Staff in shops/restaurants/etc had a couldnt care less attitude. Didn't help that it was a really cold few days and we werent interested in getting 'cake' from cafes or looking at the red light district. I find Dutch people usually lovely.

Dublin: found it drab and old-fashioned. People lovely though and good pubs

Florence: I love Italy but Florence is just a working city with islands of lovely buildings imo. We'd just come from Venice and it didn't compare.

North Wales: beautiful but unfriendly. Everywhere we went people switched from English to Welsh when they heard our English accents including a staff member in a tourist info office! We knew it happened but it just makes you feel meh. The fact if rained every single day didnt put it in a good light for us. Have visited many parts of the rest of Wales, all good. My lovely fil is from North Wales and my lovely sil and dn is also Welsh.

Rio de Janeiro - absolute dump!

Unsafe, unfriendly, unclean and the beaches (Copacabana, Ipanema, etc.) are sorely disappointing.

Igavebirthtoabanana · 28/09/2019 20:26

I forgot to add Las Vegas. I was very excited to go there, knew about the heat etc but I was very glad to leave after our 3 days there. It was just so bloody hot, no let up at night and so so crowded. Full of sweaty people in vests, puking in hotel lobby bin at 11am (this was the Venetian). Eating out very expensive but mediocre food and service.

I'd love to explore the surrounding national parks more one day but have no desire to return to Vegas itself.

Yes, but surely you’re not consulting a 19thc Baedeker to see whether you’re likely to like Venice in 2019? There’s no absence of completely up to date information.

Love Tunisia. Stayed in the hotel currently in the news for holding guests hostage from Thomas Cook, but a lovely place.
Crete -Elounda is simply beautiful
Sorrento was gorgeous.
Best ever Greek meze outside of Greece was in Rhyl Grin
Prague is amazing
Been back to Barcelona about 5 times and never get bored.
Currently in Montenegro. It’ll be nice if they get infrastructure in place for tourists Grin
Went to Dubrovnik on a trip. Total rip off. Beautiful city, but tiny and you can’t move for tour groups and eye wateringly expensive. Go outside the city walls for coffee and save euros. Really wanted to walk the city walls but they wanted another €27 each on top of the €65 per person we’d already paid for the trip. Currently stuck here for another 3 days as DH had a family bereavement and had to leave today and only one seat available on the flight. Hotel is full of families and French groups and I’m the only soloSad
Trying to talk dh into Cape Verde next year so please don’t say it’s grim.

Has to be New Zealand for me. Everyone says how amazing it is and how the landscapes and walks are exceptional.

During two months there, yes there were some decent walks, but nothing better than that in many of the other countries I’ve been too. And the cities and the towns often felt really soulless, with a ‘half-built’ temporary atmosphere, not helped by the fact that shops all closed on the dot of 5pm.

Ginfordinner · 28/09/2019 21:18

But travel is cheaper than ever and people get more leave than ever and so everywhere is over run and touristy.

I agree. DD visited Prague on her interrail trip, and the stag and hen dos from the UK totally ruined it for her. They were digustingly drunk and she said the atmosphere was horrible.

San Francisco. Approached by beggars everywhere - even in non tourist places. Just did not enjoy it there.
My sister went to Egypt and while she is glad she went felt that tourists are a real target and they had to be escorted everywhere. When she did venture out on her own she was constantly pestered to buy cheap tat.

ThingsImighthavedone · 28/09/2019 23:53

I'd like to know why some people don't like places. Trinidad and Brisbane, why? I have never been but have friends who live in both places.

I've thought of another one. Lake Maggiore . Total rip off everywhere you go and tourists ruin it. I had a miserable holiday.

ThingsImighthavedone · 28/09/2019 23:55

Sorrento - nothing wrong with the place as such but just absolutely heaving with tourists.
Taormina for the same reason. I just hate these huge tourist destinations in italy .

ThingsImighthavedone · 28/09/2019 23:58

Lanzarote - just boring. No reason to go there except sun in winter and cheap watches.

Ginfordinner · 29/09/2019 00:01

We were a little underwhelmed by Sorrento, but our main gripe was that there was nowhere to go for a walk from where we were staying. Everywhere was built up to the coast and the roads were so busy that negotiating the narrow pavements made walking unpleasant.

I accept that some places are popular and can live with that. I loved Rome even though it was busy, but I expected it to be busy so it didn't spoil my visit. Fortunately, now that DD has left school we aren't tied to going in the school holidays any more.

ThingsImighthavedone · 29/09/2019 00:03

Yes, Rome was the exception for me, absolutely loved it. We went in Feb and it rained all week but it was so exciting! Agree with your thoughts about Sorrento.

SJane48S · 29/09/2019 00:03

Ok @ThingsImighthavedone, Trinidad as I went with ex DP and 6 month year old eldest DD to visit his family. They were absolutely lovely but the there were big issues with petty crime on the island. Ex DPs family for safety reasons wouldn’t let me go out on my own and the area they lived wasn’t the loveliest. We did visit Port of Spain ( not a particularly interesting city) and a couple of other places that were beautiful but overall it wasn’t a place that I felt safe and therefore comfortable!

Brisbane - just full really! Stayed for s couple of days on a trip up the coast from Sydney. Just seemed a mishmash of a city with not much going on.

SJane48S · 29/09/2019 00:03

Just dull not just full!

ThingsImighthavedone · 29/09/2019 00:04

That's interesting. i think my friends would agree with you.

SJane48S · 29/09/2019 00:05

Also agree on Sorrento, too many hotels, too many Brits. And Naples, forgot Naples!

Teddybear45 · 29/09/2019 00:06

Hmm... difficult. If I had a choice I personally wouldn’t want to go to Paris again because if you’re a brown Brit woman travelling alone the racists of all races seem to like targeting you even when you speak French. I also wouldn’t want to return to downtown San Francisco for similar reasons.

ivykaty44 · 29/09/2019 00:08

What so bad about Welsh people speaking their own language, in their own country, to each other. They speak Welsh to each other because that's their native language, you know like Spanish people speak Spanish to each other.
Why is it so fucking difficult for non Welsh speakers to understand. It's no wonder that there can be hostility towards the English with such casual bigotry and xenophobia clearly on display.

That wasn’t what the poster wrote, the issue was that the people were talking in English and switched to another language. Whether it be Greek French or Spanish doing this it would make me feel uncomfortable due The a switch in language

capsule · 29/09/2019 00:14

Mauritius - it's such a long way to go and not that special. Lovely people, countryside and beaches but the towns are really grotty and there's not not much to do apart from the beach. The weather wasn't even that great while we were there.

resipsa · 29/09/2019 00:18

There's nowhere I wouldn't return - you can't know somewhere in a weekend, a week or even a year. There's always more to discover. For example, have lived in London and Sydney and genuinely do not understand how anyone would never want to return. I love travel. Too many places, though, and too little time/money.
