Norwegian Air to New York - food options

SJane48S · 21/08/2019 19:15

We’re flying Norwegian to New York in October (and before anyone says it, I know they’ve had financial problems, yes one of our flights has been switched to a partner airline (wonderful!), yes I’ve got scheduled airline failure insurance and no they really really aren’t ideal! I’m paying for this trip myself, I earn about a third of my DH who pays for the majority of most holidays as it’s a birthday treat on the cheap for my DH. Hopefully won’t turn out to be a nightmare!). It doesn’t look like it from their website but does anyone know if they have a trolley on board for food? You can buy a ‘three course meal’ in advance but circa £25 a head per flight for probably not very nice airline food seems a little excessive!

You can order snacks through the IFE.

They're not a bad airline at all, certainly no worse than BA for economy.

SJane48S · 21/08/2019 19:35

We’ve flown them in Europe with no issues at all & my DH has to go to Scandinavia quite a bit & tends to use them but the International routes seem to have a pretty bad rep based on reviews. But as they were just under £1k out of my budget of £3k, Norwegian it was! Thanks for the advice - great as saves a rushed visit to Pret at 5 in the morning in Departures, if they’d be even open that is! IFE though - obviously not The Institute of Fire Engineers a google suggests - is that the app?!

IFE = In Flight Entertainment i.e. the TV screen etc

20viona · 21/08/2019 19:38

I flew back from New York on their Dreamliner 18 months ago now and it was great. Nice food, drinks, decent in flight entertainment I honestly couldn't complain and I've flown long haul to US many times.

SJane48S · 21/08/2019 19:42

Good to hear the positive reviews - thank you! And IFE, who says old people can’t learn anything?! Thanks both!

Sometimes however, they run out of snacks and I note you have been already switched to another aircraft (it’s not euro Atlantic airways is it. That plane is a throwback to the early 80s.

Would not rely on them to fully provide re food or drink and would advise you to take some food and drink onboard in any case.

peachypetite · 21/08/2019 19:50

My advice is go to Pret and stock up beforehand. They only have limited snack s on board

peachypetite · 21/08/2019 19:50

Take your own headphones too. They ran out on a flight I was on and some people had to go the entire flight without any!

SJane48S · 21/08/2019 19:59

No it Evelop @AttilaTheMeerkat, small Spanish charter airline with interesting Service reviews although I think their planes are newish so that’s good! Point taken re availability of food - the flights at just gone six, haven’t flown that early from Gatwick for a while. Has anyone out there done that recently & knows Pret will be open so early? Apologies for the multiple questions!

And thanks for the headphones tip, Amazon it is!

The snacks are so expensive anyway, might as well pay for the meal! Or bring your own sandwiches etc...

BritWifeinUSA · 22/08/2019 01:55

I emigrated on a Norwegian air flight from Gatwick and flown back and forth from the US to the UK several times. You get what you pay for. I have never had any problems. The food is absolutely horrible though. Definitely bring your own if you can,

SeaToSki · 22/08/2019 02:04

It depends on what level of ticket your bought. If you bought the basic economy, it doesnt include a booked seat, food or checked bag. (You can add all of that separately). If you buy the normal economy it does include the booked seat, food and checked bag. Then there is premium which has nicer versions of all of those.

If you didnt buy food, there is NO food or drinks unless you pay with a credit card on the flight, and they sometimes run out. I was told it was 5 pounds for a cup of tea. (I didnt buy it)

It is a great value flight, but buy your 7 hours worth of food and drinks at the airport (after security) before you get on the plane

SJane48S · 22/08/2019 06:36

We’re in the cheap seats so yes the no food, hand luggage etc option. Luggage I’ve added on - meals no (£50 for my youngest DD to go ‘Euchh! What even is this?!’ and just eat the roll as she usually does seems excessive!). Thanks for all the advice - will bring some back up snacks and pick up sandwiches from anywhere open early am! I’m less bothered for myself but it’s going to be a long day and excessive consumption of carbs and chocolate will probably help!

Buy water in the airport because they won't give you water on demand. Food is awful. I've tried a few different types of meals...all awful.

Florencenotflo · 22/08/2019 06:46

All the airport concessions will be open that time of the morning. We flew before the summer and had breakfast in the airport at 6am. I'd grab something before you get on board, not worth paying over the odds for crappy snacks!

FreeButtonBee · 22/08/2019 06:51

You can take food through security. Just not liquids. So I’d bring snacks and fruit and then top up with sandwiches at the airport. Check at airport opening times for pret

OllyBJolly · 22/08/2019 06:57

When we do cheapie flights we treat ourselves to a lovely picnic from the airside shops. You can also take a hot drink on board and thermal cup of tea/coffee will stay warm for an hour or so.

stucknoue · 22/08/2019 07:03

You can take food through security (just not drinks) there is a coffee stand open at 5am, I wasn't in the mood for any more so early so didn't investigate further (short haul)

stucknoue · 22/08/2019 07:05

Ps I always take a packet of pain au chocolate from Aldi because they are long life and individually wrapped

SJane48S · 22/08/2019 07:07

:-) plane boarding for us tends to be a frogmarch with my DH charging on ahead, determined that we’re not going to have to fight for locker space for the cabin luggage. Managing a whinging DD, my temper AND a hot drink at fast pace might be too much!

Pret a manger at Gatwick are open 24 hours.

SJane48S · 22/08/2019 07:50

Great! Thank you Attila

I've just flown back from Chicago with Norwegian, bumped to Wamos and it was absolutely fine. I had booked the meals as I had kids with me, I opted for the £50 upgrade as you get hold baggage, meal and booked seat included. The plane was clean and modern.

For food, they were selling food on a trolley once the paid food had been served. The only thing I would say is to take your own drinks (you'll have to buy them after security) as they weren't offered very often, and take a long sleeved thin top to layer with as it wasn't super warm. Not cold, but I like to be snuggly.

Toilets were super clean and the staff were very professional.

I had also read the trip advisor reviews, but in the end both 8 hour flights were absolutely fine

A friend flew recently and was transferred to a partner , said the IFE was dire - 1 film on offer which was Beethoven. Bring iPads with films download.
