SO-Nearest place to New York to laze by a pool after 2 days shopping????????

Whooosh · 30/07/2007 16:09

Is this feasible?

Would really like to take DP to New York but we are both in need of some sun and relaxation....not something one immediately thinks of wrt New York.
However,is there anywhere relatively close by that we could just collapse by a pool and soak up some sun?

The Hamptons?

Whooosh · 30/07/2007 21:02

Am open to any ideas-how far [ignorant emoticon]are the Hamptons from New York and what would be the best way to get there from NYC?

Rather than New York why not try San Francisco then jump on a flight to Vegas. Only 1 hour flight and relatively cheap (less than $100). Some of the hotels in Vegas have fantastic pool areas

Whooosh · 31/07/2007 13:12

Great idea-love it in fact but seems a long way to go for just three days-or am I being a wimp?

You can get to Fire Island or Hamptons by privately owned bus/van service that depart at set times from various locations in Manhattan. Best to reserve in advance, which you can do by calling ahead.

The Fire Island vans will take you to the ferry for a 30 minute ride to the island. No cars are allowed on the island, so you'll walk or (if you want to visit another community that isn't nearby), take a water taxi. And by the way - there are over a dozen communities on Fire Island, and two of them are famously gay. The other communities have their own flavour: singles, families, etc.

You can drive to the Hamptons, and you'd need a car once there to move around. I know there is a wonderful/luxurious hotel in Montauk (can't remember the name), but Montauk is also the furthest drive from Manhattan.

Whatever you do, I'd advise visiting either during the week. They become crowded/over-run on weekends.

What about The Poconos - about 3 hour's drive west from Manhattan in Pennysylvania. Very, very beautiful, relaxing - and plenty of sun in summer, though is mainly known for skiiing in winter. Lots of 'honeymoon' type resorts.

Whooosh · 31/07/2007 13:42

Earlybird-thanks for all that info-the idea is really growing on me.
Turqoise-not ssure I want a 3hr drive each way as we will only be there for 3 days in total (one at least in NY shopping)

It is a long 12 hr flight whoosh but I prefer to SF much more than NY and I think the shopping is better too. Plus remember SF is 8 hours behind in time although jet lag could be a problem. I must admit I used to love my beach holidays but the last few years dh have been to US on a three centre holiday (SF, LV then NY) and even though there's a lot of sightseeing and you're not lying by a pool, walking about in the lovely warm sun, at your own pace, is very relaxing.P.S Although I said I prefer SF, NY is fabulous too x

Most of the hotels on Fire Island are in the Pines and Cherry Grove (the two gay communities).

A long, long time ago I stayed in Housers in Ocean Bay Park. It was fine - nothing exceptional though. I don't think you'll get real luxury on the island because it's a seasonal place. Again, can't emphasise enough - go during the week. Weekends are a zoo.

When are you travelling? Alot of the island shops/restaurants shut down by end of Sept.

FYI - Ocean Beach is the island's biggest town with restaurants, shops and even a little movie theatre. Actually, it's a big hall with a movie screen. You sit on folding chairs - many people bring pillows. At least that's how it used to be 12 yearsago. Not sure about now.

Hoping to go week after next and will be mid-weeks so sounds fab-thanks again earlybird.

nooooo, go to boston, and hop onto cape cod. much easier, shorter flight, great city, fabulous beaches and all the lobster you can eat on the cape. bobs your uncle

Whooosh · 01/08/2007 09:28

I absolutely love Boston-what's the best way to "hop onto Cape Cod"?

OP posts:
MintyDixCharrington · 01/08/2007 19:31

you can get a boat from boston harbour direct to provincetown, takes an hour or less. SO easy. Otherwise if you've hired a car, you drive which can take you between 2 and 3.5 hours depending on which bit of the cape you are going to and if it is a friday evening or not (don't do it then!).

or of course you can chopper ifyou are feeling flash...

provincetown is, obviously, the gay capital of everything, but it is also an excellent place to stay I think. it has the best restaurants, you can go whalewatching from there, it has spectacular beaches within a few minutes drive on both the bay and ocean side, good cinema, etc etc.

otherwise if you don't feel like being the minority couple in town I'd stay somewhere like truro or wellfleet or orleans, just because they are less busy than closer to the mainland. If you want to explore then hire a car and drive onto the cape, rather than take the boat - there is so much to see.
