Virgin to Orlando

WelshMoth · 01/06/2019 22:31

Flying to Disney Florida this August. Hoping to pack teabags and snacks (biscuits, breakfast bars etc). I've been warned that I have to declare all Foodstuffs when we arrive at Orlando and that there maybe a chance that they'll be confiscated. Does anyone know anything about this?

You can take any food that is in factory packaging EXCEPT fruit, veg and meat.

Teabags in the original bag yes
Apple no
Kit kats yes
Carrot sticks no
Homepridebread yes
Ham no

Also you wont get any liquids gels or pastes in your hand luggage through airport security (which is separate to the rules for entering the USA)

PancakesAndMapleSyrup · 02/06/2019 02:46

Don't pick up any fruit from the plane (food served/snacks) and pop it in your bag either, not sure about the US but in Aus you get a humongous fine if you do that.

WelshMoth · 02/06/2019 08:54

Thanks both!
So I should be ok with packing boxes of cereal bars, teabags etc into my suitcase?

No fruit - check.

Hang luggage - usual rules apply re fluids.

Thank you!

Teabags in original packaging and commercially produced biscuits/cereal bars are fine to bring in your suitcase.

Do not bring any fruit, veg, meat or fish products into the US. Leave any uneaten fruit behind on the aircraft.

WelshMoth · 02/06/2019 17:09

Fab! Thanks.
Off to Disney with free tickets but no dining plan so I'm trying to keep costs down.

Even food that can be brought into here must be declared. Your customs form will say “are you bringing any food”. Last time I went back to the UK to visit my mum she gave me an advent calendar to bring home with me. Had to be declared although it is permitted. Once had a Twix confiscated from me crossing over from Canada by road because I didn’t declare it. It wasn’t confiscated because it wasn’t permitted. It was confiscated because I didn’t declare it and we got a stern lecture on not interpreting the customs form how we wish and “any food” means “any food”.

No need to bring cereal bars. We do have them here, you know...

VimFuego101 · 03/06/2019 00:12

Where are you staying? Can you do an Amazon order to your hotel?

Ricekrispie22 · 03/06/2019 05:54

I take dried fruit to the US all the time, no problem.

WelshMoth · 03/06/2019 16:15

Vim that was going to be a question for another post. Don't s'pose you know the answer?

BritWife like I said, am trying to keep costs down. No car on these hols and I'm guessing there won't be a Home Bargains equivalent in Disney.

Staying in the Disney Caribbean Vim.

We travelled serval times with kids. I always take a picnic for me and kids for plane. Anything left over is left on plane if picnic but if crisps /chocolate just take it into USA. Without declaring. I would leave ham sandwiches and fruit on plane , if not eaten.

In main suitcase we take fruit bars, raisins, cereal bars, non chocolate biscuits and crisps etc. Loads of them to keep kids full in long Disney queue. Never declared and never been stopped. It’s all sealed in packaging.

kathryn77 · 03/06/2019 16:22

Just don’t take too much chocolate as it will melt! I also took Robinson’s squash , small containers that you can use with water in parks to make a better drink.

kathryn77 · 03/06/2019 16:23

However if you are staying st Disney and have dining plan, you will have loads of food so just think of small snacks! That what we did, mainly breakfast style snacks. Have been known to take cereal too!

MagicKingdom · 03/06/2019 16:25

Walmart has a English section with Pg tips, Cadburys and other English brands. I would take cupboard food with me if space wasn't an issue. We always hire a car and visit lots of supermarkets though.

The easiest and most robust grocery delivery service and seemingly the most popular with other guests is by far Garden Grocer. We use it mainly for breakfast items, snacks and bottled water. I don’t want to spend the time or money eating breakfast in the food court every morning, so having cereal and juice in our room is the best solution for us. We have never been disappointed by GG, and have always found their service to be top-notch.
Orders are delivered to bell services at your hotel within the delivery window selected. When we’ve used the service, I sign up to receive both an email notification and a text message (optional) when the goods arrived. Our deliveryexperiences have been flawless. Cold items arerefrigerated by bell services at the hotel (so be sure to tip them).
As of April 2019, Disney started a $6 per package handling fee for each package that is received through the front desk or delivered to your hotel room. If you pick up your order from bell services, there’s still no fee (as that’s not the front desk); it only applies if the order is delivered to your room. Second, the fee is still far less than you save by doing it this way.
Disney do allow you to order and receive delivery from outside pizza chains. Per Disney policy, you must meet the delivery driver in the lobby. We like the wood fired pizzas from Flippers Pizzeria. flipperspizzeria.com/menu/ One 16 inch pizza is enough for a family of four.

Loads of really good suggestions here - thanks!

Rice that's incredibly helpful - thanks!

I've not googled yet but I'm guessing that I can register online and start choosing? I think I can do an online check in on the My Disney Experience app and get my room number.

I'm so excited!

The supermarkets out there are fab (Publix is my favourite but also Walmart/Walgreens) and very reasonably priced so you could get all that stuff when you are there?
I know not everyone wants to go to the supermarket on the first day of their holiday but we actually enjoy walking around and looking at all the different food and products... but maybe my family are just strange lol Grin
We spent ages looking at all the different brands and food that you just don’t get here in the UK. The DC were particularly impressed with the biscuit and cookie selection and I spent ages ogling at the size of the fruit - the watermelons were absolutely mahoosive, like nothing I’d ever seen before Smile
Enjoy op, you’ll have an amazing time - I’m very jealous!

WelshMoth · 03/06/2019 20:32

Poptart I hear you. We've spent the last 10 years camping cheaply in France and my most favourite thing is strolling around their intermarché and buying hand wash, toiletries, breads and potted meats. Love it!

Just to second the person who said squash - there are water (drinking) fountains in Disney but the water tastes a bit questionable. Take bottles and either the tiny squeeze bottles of squash or get some of the American powder "sticks to go" - I love Crystal Light lemonade.

rosydreams · 03/06/2019 20:48

never drink from the taps the water quality in florida is awful. We always bought water from the supermarkets to drink or cook in.I wouldn't even boil pasta in it,it was that bad.

i took tea bags, squash, biscuits in my m ain luggage all were fine

WelshMoth · 04/06/2019 05:36

Thanks. I've been toying with the idea of buying filter bottles
But they look pricey from amazon. We're not big fizzy pop drinkers so a water bottle is essential. I've been warned so many times about the Florida water.

I seem to recall the customs form has recently changed. It was to ask about any food. I think on my last visit is was more specific and asked about things like fruit and meat.

Under the old system I always declared my chocolate, etc (and was waved through) but it wasn't covered by the new question.

WelshMoth · 04/06/2019 12:45

Thanks eurochick. Is that form given on the plane?
