Passport advice

Hoping to get a bit of advice,
My dad who is in his 50s is having to apply for a new adult passport as he has only had handwritten ones in the past, I'm wondering does he need to provide his parents birth/death certificates for this? His mum is still alive but in her late 80s and unsure if she has a birth certificate and his dad passed away many years ago.
Just don't want to send the application without having all the correct supporting documents.
Thank you to anyone that has any advice Smile

Does he have any of the old ones?

Justme10 · 10/05/2019 23:50

Yes he has both the old ones and is planning on sending them both with his application

If he was born before 1st Jan 1983 then it's just his birth certificate that's required

AuntieStella · 10/05/2019 23:53

Does he still have the passport number from the last one he held (guessing around late 80s?)

Even though long-expired, it still counts as a renewal, so shouid not need the full suite of documents that are sometimes required for first issue.

Ring the helpline for absolutelymcirrect advice - I've found then very helpful in the past

You were born or adopted in the UK

What documents you need depend on when you were born.

Before 1 January 1983

You’ll need yourfull birth certificateor adoption certificate.

RubberTreePlant · 10/05/2019 23:55

Were his previous passports full ten year adult passports?

dementedpixie · 10/05/2019 23:55

Does say the first application covers those who had handwritten ones:

www.gov.uk/apply-first-adult-passport

Heratnumber7 · 10/05/2019 23:56

Read the instructions that come with the form, or on line. They are quite explicit as to what's required.

Justme10 · 10/05/2019 23:58

@dementedpixie thank you that is what I thought but I just wanted to double check Smile

@AuntieStella I did phone the advice line and they told me it would have to be a new application because he has one from the 80s that was only valid for a year and a joint one from the early 90s that was again only valid for a year. But we have put the passport numbers on the application and are going to send them away as well.

At the very most he will need his birth certificate plus the old passports

Justme10 · 11/05/2019 00:02

@Heratnumber7 of course I have read the booklet but I just wanted to double check as I had to include my mum's death certificate when applying for mine but wasn't sure with my dads age if he would need to as well with the mention of being born before 1983 on the instructions

OP posts:
Heratnumber7 · 11/05/2019 00:03

What do the instructions say?

dementedpixie · 11/05/2019 00:06

The birth certificates are just to show if they are a British citizen. If born before 1st Jan 1983 you got citizenship by being born here. If born after that then citizenship was not granted automatically by being born here, it was passed on from your parents.

dementedpixie · 11/05/2019 00:06

Is he applying online?

Justme10 · 11/05/2019 00:07

There is no mention of sending death certificates on the instructions, but I wasn't sure if I had to send my mum's since I was born after 1983 or if it was just standard for everyone to do it.
There's no harm in me double checking with people who may know more than me so not to cause any delays

OP posts:
RubberTreePlant · 11/05/2019 00:09

He only needs to send his own birth certificate. (Because born before 83.)

Justme10 · 11/05/2019 00:09

@dementedpixie thank you I didn't know that about citizenship so that clears up the mention of being born before or after 1983.
And no he is using the paper application.
Thank you, you have been very helpful Smile

He didn't hold a full passport so its treated as a new application and he needs to provide the documentation commensurate with a new application.

dementedpixie · 11/05/2019 00:11

Do it online, its £10 cheaper

RubberTreePlant · 11/05/2019 00:12

He'll have to have the whole security interview anyway, I would think.

Aren't they compulsory for all new adult passport applications?

RubberTreePlant · 11/05/2019 00:13

He didn't hold a full passport so its treated as a new application and he needs to provide the documentation commensurate with a new application.

Which is his own birth certificate.

dementedpixie · 11/05/2019 00:15

It just says they may be asked to attend an interview. Might not have to if old passports held

Justme10 · 11/05/2019 00:15

@dementedpixie he's not a fan of doing things online or using computers he would much rather physically fill in a form lol!

@RubberTreePlant Yeah he will have to go for an interview as well

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 11/05/2019 00:18

He might not especially if he's had old passports
