I just came back from New York with Dh and ds and we loved it ! I’d love to go again ! I would also love to go back to USA but where ? Which city would you recommend to go ?

Personally I love Washington DC, great museums and monuments to look at. Would most likely depend on the age of your DS though. I went on my own a few years back and would probably wait until the kids are teens to head back.

Boston is lovely and it's easy to get the train to visit the rest of New England. The coast and little towns are very pretty and you can take a boat trip off Cape Cod

jenthelibrarian · 14/04/2019 11:42

Chicago is fabulous and not so full of tourists, we were given free dessert in a restaurant simply for being British.

Washington, I agree is lovely. Boston might be enjoyable with youngsters, too.

San Francisco and / or San Diego. Both are amazing. We just came back from SF last month and Norwegian have a very good deal on it. £230 return per person direct with on board WiFi. Also recommend signing up for Jacks Flight Club. Best 15/20£ we ever spent. They do all the searching low cost deals for you.

RusholmeRuffian · 15/04/2019 10:03

Chicago is my favourite city in the US but I also like Boston, Philadelphia, Austin, Savannah and Charleston.

Swiftier · 17/04/2019 20:36

San Francisco would get my vote 😊

ZaraW · 18/04/2019 05:02

Another vote for San Francisco.

Meretricious · 18/04/2019 05:08

SAN Francisco and Yosemite if you like h8king etc, you could do a great road trip. Also, not US obviously, but Vancouver is an amazing city with loads to do.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/04/2019 05:09

I love America, so much to see. We are planning Washington DC next, followed by a road trip through Virginia and maybe ending up in Chicago.

I’d recommend San Francisco. We loved New Orleans but were there about 25 years ago.

Alicewond · 18/04/2019 05:27

Hawaii

sar302 · 18/04/2019 08:16

We drove through California for our honeymoon - epic road trip!

SyrilSneer · 18/04/2019 08:22

Seattle! Or back to NY, I’ve been multiple times and am still not bored.

BoogleMcGroogle · 18/04/2019 08:28

We are just back from New York, Washington and Shenandoah. My first time in DC and I loved it. I also love Boston and Philadelphia, but Washington was fantastic, with a really good vibe. Shenandoah is an hours drive away and is breathtakingly beautiful. My next plan is Georgia and the Carolinas Smile

BubblesBuddy · 19/04/2019 03:29

I am writing this from Waynesboro in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. Just driven the Skyline Drive. Can 100% recommend Virginia.

Also I think Washington is great, SF and we have also been to Philadelphia. That’s a great city for Brits to visit. Revolution History is all around and early English settlers left their mark with some fine buildings.

edgeofheaven · 19/04/2019 03:42

New Orleans and San Francisco are fantastic cities.

Expressedways · 19/04/2019 03:44

Can I ask where this was so I can go please??
But OP, definitely add Chicago to the list- come in summer and enjoy our 24 beaches!

BritWifeinUSA · 20/04/2019 16:32

This is such a huge country you could have 1000 responses and still not covered everything. Personally I’d say come back and see the real America. For me that’s the western national parks, the mountains, canyons, rivers, the beautiful landscapes. I’m not a city person. I think our big cities here are not really typically American. When you’re in Chicago, New York, etc you could be anywhere in the world. But if you’re looking for a city to visit I’d have to say Seattle.

Boneshere · 21/04/2019 04:56

Seattle, Washington DC, Nashville, New Orleans?

DonegalGhirl · 22/04/2019 10:49

I’d definitely recommend a visit to Washington, very easy city to navigate around & lots of very interesting museums & monuments to see. Also apply in advance to visit the White House & Pentagon. We done the White House tour & it’s a great experience, unfortunately we didn’t have time to visit the Pentagon. Arlington Cemetery and Grave of the Unknown Soldier is another must see. Lots of lovely hotels, cafes & shops in the Georgetown area, although quite expensive. If you’re religious a visit to the Basilica of the Holy Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is also worth a visit.

Below are the links to apply for the White House & Pentagon tours, both are free.

Other ideas for future trips:

Yellowstone National Park combined with Rocky Mountain National Park (though a bit of a drive between the two)

Parks in Utah--Bryce Canyon, Zion, Arches, etc. (though not in midsummer as heat can be a problem)

Oregon and California coasts (can visit Redwoods on the way)

honeyrider · 11/05/2019 14:58

We're just back from Philadelphia and Chicago, been to New York, Boston and Washington plus Florida for a sun holiday before and Philadelphia and Washington are nicer than the other places we visited.

Todamhottoday · 11/05/2019 15:16

Visited all over the States, been to some good and not so good citys over the last 30 years, and visited most of the major citys and what would be big must see's, but I would recommend getting out to see some of the country outside really built up areas.

Wyoming, Montana and Colorado, spent weeks in each state just travelling around are fantastic to see. Maybe stay on a working ranch (not a dude/Disney type place).

I did like Washington DC, and even went into the White House which was very interesting, but this was about 25 years ago. Hated NY with a passion.

I prefer the smaller places outside SF, like Carmel, Salsulito and so on.

Went back to Boston about 7 years ago after a break of almost 18 years and really did not like it at all. But there are some very nice areas of the whole of New England which is made up of many states to see.

My idea of hell would be Disney in Florida! So we all like different things and your going to get really conflicting advice depending on what we all like

honeyrider · 11/05/2019 19:33

We didn't like New York at all.
