Where to take 15 year old daughter

I'm planning a long weekend away with my 15 year old daughter for her birthday and would like some ideas of where to go.

Short haul as only for a few days. We would like to do a little sightseeing, shopping, eating out, markets, quite laid back but a bit of an adventure.

Has anyone been somewhere they would recommend?

Thank you

Following closely, as I'm planning the same sort of trip, combined b'day end of exams celebration. We're currently thinking Edinburgh, but would be very interested to see where else is recommended.

Newcastle for the shopping, eating out& market. Regular 10 min fast train ride to Durham to visit the cathedral, castle etc. Durham also has good eating places.

Budapest is lovely - the public spa is fun, the ballet was super cheap for even a box, cable car, art galleries, and best of all, they still have a c&a! It's pretty cheap compared to eurozone, though the £ have depreciated in value since we visited.
Wizz air was crazy cheap, under £60 return but like Ryan air, even wheeled carryons cost.

Zurich is a lovely compact city to visit. Great shops, boat trips on lake. Great cafes and gorgeous cakes.

Thank you for all the ideas so far

Barcelona is nice. Lots to see, nice food and will be lovely in spring.

hopewardrobe · 14/03/2019 15:57

My first thought was Barcelona too. I will have a look. Thank you

Amsterdam.

So pretty, tons of culture (Anne frank house if that’s of interest), lovely cafes and art galleries etc. Nice shops and very “trendy”. Obviously you can avoid all the dodgy red light bits!

I was going to say Barcelona too. Went with my son when he was 15, both loved it. We stayed in a hotel with a rooftop swimming pool.

WFTisgoingoninmyhead · 14/03/2019 16:07

I love YORK and it has all of the attributes you are looking for, however, I just had a look and have now put Budapest on my list of places I NEED to go to.

iknowimcoming · 14/03/2019 16:24

Rome? Me and dd went there when she was that age - had a fab time!

slug · 14/03/2019 16:48

Budapest has cheap spas so if the weather goes tit up there's always something to do. the big indoor food market is also eye opening.
Naples - Food, sun, Capri and a day wandering around Pompeii
DD and I had a lovely long weekend in Lyme Regis. There is something very therapeutic about smashing rocks to find fossils

Springiscomingsoon · 14/03/2019 16:58

Rome, Barcelona and Amsterdam are all amazing

Moanymoaner123 · 14/03/2019 17:00

I second Budapest, stay at Brody House, you won't regret it.

HaventGotAllDay · 14/03/2019 17:02

Dd is 15 and we are going to Madrid and Brussels this summer.
Lisbon also good.
easyJet to Madrid was less than £100 for both of us.

Originofstars · 14/03/2019 17:04

I second Berlin. Took my 15yo there recently. It’s vibrant and full of young adults from everywhere working and studying. It really turned his head and has fuelled his ambitions

Thank you all so much. You have given me some good ideas to look at and research. I'm thinking of Barcelona first but also now writing a list of the others.

Any recommendations for places to stay in Barcelona?

Thank you

I took 15 year old dd to Paris last October. She completely fell in love with the place and has gone from a child that hated studying French to now wanting to live there and to learn to speak it fluently! (She’s got a way to go yet, but I ain’t gonna knock her enthusiasm Wink)

I have also taken both my teen dds to Berlin and Copenhagen. This year we’re doing Bilbao and Krakow (including a trip to Auswich). I’m also planning to take them to Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussels, Budapest and either Florence or Rome over the next few years.

I just want them to have some experience of European cities before they fly the nest; we have all this practically on our doorstep - it would be a shame not to take advantage of it. The only place I got taken as a child was rural France so I was totally unprepared when I landed in Madrid at the age of 20 for my year abroad to find my way around!
