Your favourite ever city break

We're lucky enough to have enjoyed a number of city breaks since children were old enough to be left at home. Looking for ideas for more unusual places to visit. As it's just for a weekend, don't want particularly long flights - max 3 hours pref less.
We've been to: Paris; Berlin; Munich; Frankfurt; Vienna; Innsbruck; Marrakesh; Prague; Budapest; Lisbon; Dubrovnik; Split

On the list already are: Bruges; Amsterdam; Milan; Seville; Bilbao; Madrid; Carcassonne; Krakow

Where have you visited that you'd strongly recommend as a werkend destination? Apologies in advance if I say we've already been somewhere you suggest, I've not listed the places we've visited on summer holidays

Krakow - historic, loads to see, great bars, flavoured Polish vodka

Bilbao - world class art, fantastic bars and food (pintxos) and wine (txakoli)

Bruges is lovely.
Also loved the following:
Lisbon
Salzburg
Lublijana
Luca
Reykjavik
Gdansk (gorgeous place)

( great value flying from Southend too )

OlafLovesAnna · 16/02/2019 09:19

Lisbon at any time of year but high summer. Compact enough to walk around, great public transport and loads to see/do.

IHeartKingThistle · 16/02/2019 09:20

Loved Salzburg.

CountFosco · 16/02/2019 09:21

Trier is lovely, lots of history and you canhead up the Mosel and drink lots of good wine as well.

yearinyearout · 16/02/2019 09:23

Porto. Cheap flights, metro goes direct from the airport to the city, and just an all round lovely place!

Isitmybathtimeyet · 16/02/2019 09:24

Stockholm, Stockholm, Stockholm.

I've managed a fair few cities over the years and Stockholm was the best ever. Lovely city to walk about it (Gamla Stan, the old town), interesting shops, fantastic museums and the gobsmacking Gustav Vasa, and yummy food.

happystory · 16/02/2019 09:31

Palma
Valencia
Bordeaux

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 16/02/2019 09:42

@beanaseireann that's because I'm very old!!! And some we've visited as part of longer summer holidays
My favourite cities so far are Venice and Budapest. Also loved Lisbon, Prague, Munich, Rome, Florence . But not beenanywhere we haven't enjoyed, even when not as much to do as others - always grateful for being able to do these things. Really appreciate all the new suggestions

@Isitmybathtimeyet is Stockholm very expensive?

Bubba1234 · 16/02/2019 09:47

Düsseldorf is lovely
Amsterdam is a great one loads to do

Isitmybathtimeyet · 16/02/2019 09:50

Rocking, it's not cheap. They do a good museum pass which was very good value, and I think a transport one too. The metro is fab. We stayed in the suburbs in a decent but basic hotel and travelled in very easily, and you get boats around the islands too. The food is London prices+ but we ate mostly in traditional places which weren't too bad - eg a place with a herring buffet! Booze is not at all cheap.

diplodocusinermine · 16/02/2019 09:53

Stockholm and Copenhagen

borntobequiet · 16/02/2019 09:53

Lisbon in late October. Warm enough to get the train to Cascais, sunbathe and stroll. Great public transport and loads to see.

AnnaMagnani · 16/02/2019 09:56

Preferred Warsaw to Krakow. Stunning old town, packed with history, loads to do.

Bruges is v pretty but all of the rest of the world thinks so too which was a drawback.

Madrid probably one of my favorite holidays.

And yes, Stockholm was eye-wateringly expensive. DH went on his own, says he didn't like it - old town pretty but full of tat and bad food. Art galleries and Skansen great but a long weekend, not longer.

Closer to home, on the cheapskates theme, have just had a superb break in Liverpool- loads to do and practically every museum is free.

shirleyschmidt · 16/02/2019 09:57

Another vote for Stockholm!! It's cool and modern yet quaint and historic. Friendly people.
