Copenhagen, Berlin, Amsterdam

We are thinking of staying in two of these three cities. Right now we are comparing flats in each city, but without knowing much about them, it's difficult to decide. I thought I'd start here. Smile

Any idea which are the best neighbourhoods in each city? We are four adults, interested in museums, galleries, exploring neighbourhoods.

Berlin is amazing for museums, so many!

AGHHHH · 19/01/2019 00:28

I love Amsterdam and liked Copenhagen.

Found Berlin underwhelming, but I also hate museums in general so you may love it.

TinselAndKnickers · 19/01/2019 00:34

Amsterdam 1000%.

I was not overly impressed with Berlin

Mentounasc · 19/01/2019 00:53

How the heck can anyone be underwhelmed or not impressed by Berlin! I am deeply insulted.

OP, if you like museums then Mitte is probably the best district for you, it's good for nicely renovated boutique hotels too. Prenzlauer Berg is achingly hip and has a lively scene, as doesFriedrichshain, and they're both adjacent to Mitte.

Berlin does a tourist ticket for 48 or 72 hours which includes the excellent public transport and discounts for the museums etc. You can buy it at the airports on arrival.

Having said all that, as Berliners we also loved our holiday in Amsterdam - but it was so overly full of tourists!

Mentounasc · 19/01/2019 00:57

Ah, have Seen you're looking at flats. Do bear in mind that most flats for offer in Berlin on AirBnB for instance are not legal- the landlords should get a special license to operate and many don't. I do disapprove of holiday rental flats a bit because the city has a huge rental crisis and we need the flats for locals.

When I went to Amsterdam we stayed in a small hotel near the Vondelpark - the park itself is lovely, it was a really nice area, & also only a short walk to Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum etc (& canals for getting boats either to other destinations or just for sightseeing)

Have never been to Berlin, & only had a day trip to Copenhagen, so can’t help with accommodation advice, but would recommend a boat trip in Copenhagen too Smile

GiantKitten · 19/01/2019 01:06

Just discovered that Airbnb helpfully has Vondelpark as a search area!

Iamdanish · 19/01/2019 01:33

Local to Copenhagen 👋.
Inner city with lots of old buildings as well as castles, try Nyhavn, you must do a canal tour, there are several museums - Thorvaldsen, Glyptoteket, national museum of art.
If you take the train (about 30 mins.) you could visit art museum Louisiana (very famous), and another 20 mins. In the same direction Kronborg (Hamlet) in Helsinore, beautyfull old city if you stay off the main street.
I would stay in the inner city, but avoid area around the central station. But it is expensive! Feel free to ask about areas if you decide to go 😀.
But whatever you do DON'T go and see the little mermaid 😀.
Hope this helps, have a nice holiday.

GiantKitten · 19/01/2019 01:39

Iamdanish our canal boat trip took in the Little Mermaid. She was surprising Grin

Iamdanish · 19/01/2019 01:42

That's a nice way to put it 😂.
Feel quite shameful that she is what all tourists see 😏

Andylion · 19/01/2019 14:19

Thank you everyone,

Mentounasc, I've just been told that my travelling partner has a hotel in mind. In light of your comment, it seems the best plan.

Is it bad that I want to see The Little Mermaid? Blush

I haven't been to Copenhagen but have been to both Amsterdam and Berlin and preferred Berlin by a huge margin.

Amsterdam had nice beer and nice chips; Berlin has pretty much everything anybody could ever desire.

GiantKitten · 19/01/2019 17:12

Andylion, this hotel is in the same street where we stayed in Amsterdam but even closer to Museumplein.

LovingLola · 19/01/2019 17:14

I’ve been to all three
Loved them all!

Chewbecca · 19/01/2019 17:20

We stayed at Louisa’s Place (apartments) in Berlin & really liked it. The science museum was v good. Also enjoyed Copenhagen very much, though v ££ to eat/drink.

Not very keen on Amsterdam personally, I found it seedy.

GiantKitten · 19/01/2019 17:25

The only seedy part we found was around the station/red light district. The rest was lovely. I’ve just been looking again at my photos; it was delightful Confused

GiantKitten · 19/01/2019 20:47

In fact I've just discussed Amsterdam on whatsapp with DD1 (who I went with, she lives in the US now) & she said funnily enough she's recently had the same conversation with friends who'd heard it was seedy & good for nothing but beer & chips Hmm but were amazed by how beautiful it is.

So I'm really flummoxed by the loathers. I know it attracts ghastly stag parties, & that the red light district is depressing, but honestly, there's so much more to it than that!

Andylion · 19/01/2019 21:05

Thanks for all the replies, We have decided to just do Copenhagen And Berlin.

And now I am on the lookout for a good SIM card deal that will work in both cities for Canadians.

OP posts:
greendale17 · 21/01/2019 19:27

I didn’t like Berlin at all.

Mentounasc · 22/01/2019 17:14

Ha greendale, Berlin wasn't overly impressed by you either .

Re SIM card, OP: an EU SIM card should work in another EU country without roaming charges, so a card you buy in Copenhagen will be valid in Berlin and vice versa (at least that's the case for me). The only problem is that anti-crime laws in some countries such as Germany mean that you can't just buy a SIM card and use it straight off - you have to go through an identification process. Apparently there is a way of getting round it for tourists, but you'd need to ask about that specifically. It might be easier to get a Danish card instead.

AGHHHH · 22/01/2019 19:46

So what if not everyone loves Berlin, it doesn't stop you from loving it does it. What's with all the sarcastic retorts every time someone expresses anything negative towards it? You think it's wonderful, I personally didn't. Neither of us are right. Confused

AGHHHH · 22/01/2019 19:47

And I'm sure you are "joking" but my comment stands either way.

GoldenBuns · 22/01/2019 19:53

If you do change your mind about Amsterdam - we loved it! Stayed in a lovely boutique hotel called Canal House on Keizersgracht (the name of a canal). Walking distance to museums, sight etc. It's a great area, lots of lovely candlelit pubs, restaurants, boutiques. I'd love to go back.

AGHHHH · 22/01/2019 20:02

Yes again, Amsterdam is wonderful. The architecture is especially beautiful and different from anywhere else.

GoldenBuns · 22/01/2019 20:04

*As another poster said, If you stay away from the red light district, which I loathed -Amsterdam is charming
