family adventure holiday august

where would you go at this time of year with 2 teens and a 9 year old. don't have pots of cash but its my 50th so want to do something a bit different. keen on safari but not sure if its a good time of year? where would you suggest and any advice about who to book through? thanks

Watching with interest as it's my 50th this year and we was thinking of planning a bit more of an adventurous holiday for 2020. We were thinking California maybe - flying out to San Francisco and then exploring from there but I will watch to see what other people suggest as we've only ever really done European holidays up to now.

I would recommend Costa Rica - wildlife , surf, zip wires, white water rafting...

The alps or Pyrenees in summer are gorgeous with loads of outdoor activities. Have a look at companies like Alpine Elements for ideas.

Longhaul I'd suggest Vietnam

Make sure you look at the cost of vaccinations for some destinations. It can add 1k onto a holiday quite easily.

The Azores? Whale watching, hiking volcanoes, geothermal pools, stand up paddle boarding pleasant temperature and short flight time.

West coast of Canada: Vancouver, Whistler and Vancouver Island. Surprisingly short flight, great city, close to the mountains, tons of activities - swimming in lakes, canoeing, bear watching, whale watching, great food, reasonably price. Enjoy!

Would strongly recommend Costa Rica - went and saw raccoons, monkeys, sloths, coati, gecko etc, ziplining a few hundred metres up, rainforest, active volcanoes, horseriding through jungle, hot springs, waterslide through jungle etc. We went with TUI so AI and activities like kayak, windsurfing, SUP, beach volleyball and food included, stayed at RUI Guanacaste. Didn't pay for vaccines, got them at doctors on NHS.

Also been to Cape Town and did day safari from round there and penguins on beach, Table Mountain, also great but need precautions re safety. Not sure what weather there is like in August, went earlier in year.

What is your idea of adventure? Far away, different language area, away from it all without support? You could bikepack around Scotland for next to nothing or go to Patagonia to see the glaciers on a guided tour for an arm and a leg. The former being harder and more adventurous in terms of isolation without backup.

we have travelled widely in the past but my husband was treated a few years ago for a brain tumour and gets anxious and tired, so - though i would consider long haul - we would need plenty of rest stops.

In that case is it somewhere that has a rest point at the end with a bit of travel to get there or is it the travel there that needs to be adventurous? You could do the Trans Siberian rail.... That is quite cool if you can cope with the food. Plenty of rest along the way.

We are doing Sweden and Norway this summer and that has bear, beaver, moose etc safaris and reindeer and ziplines / whitewater rafting by Voss in Norway. We are going from Stockholm to Bergen. Flying with Ryanair and booked via Booking.com and Novosol. Is a fair bit of driving, you maybe to get a lot of it in Bergen area and up to 3 hours inland and fly in and out of Bergen. Sweden wildlife is via WildSweden. We are staying there on a llama farm.

We booked a Disney world through a local travel agent who listened to our wants and needs and booked accordingly.
You can book direct through Disney, so travel is seemless.

It's rainy season in Costa Rica in August if you're considering it - however we went in August 2 years ago & the prices are cheaper & if you can put up with usually one thunderstorm a day (mostly in the afternoon or evening) then it's a good option! There are AI options through TUI if that's your bag - alternatively it's very easy to plan your own agenda & hire a driver to take you between locations. I think a lot of people drive (although not sure I'd have fancied as I'm wussy!). We did San Jose, Arenal & Manuel Antonio but there are loads of places i wish we'd gone - especially the cloud forest! There was loads of wildlife & the scenery (except in San Jose which was a bit of a hole!) was brilliant. We flew BA direct & arranged transport in advance. Canada as a PP has suggested would be great or how about California & driving?

We did a teens adventure holiday in Peru a few years ago in August. I think it was with Family Adventures Worldwide. (Or similar). It was absolutely brilliant. They have other great destinations and they are geared up for entertaining teens.

Disney? This surely isn’t remotely adventurous?

We also loved Alaska. It depends on the money you wish to spend and whether long haul will suit your DH. We also went to the Arctic in August! California can be very hot in August but it’s a good time to do any safari in East Africa. It won’t be cheap though and it’s peak season for many areas because it’s the dry season. South Africa is winter but great for everything except beaches! Kruger wildlife is great then and you can certainly enjoy Durban and around. It’s a bit colder in Cape Town so not the best time to visit but late August will be ok. The great advantage is price - it’s low season!

I've found a great sounding trip to America with a bit of camping and some hotels. might be too much for DH... it's with great American adventures / trekamerica but I can't see any trip advisor reviews - anyone heard of them or know anyone who runs something similar? this includes grand canyon, Disney, Yosemite and las vegas

We went on a safari to Kenya in august, to be honest the weather was ideal. We spent four days inland on safari and it was dry, and around 18-20 degrees each day. We then went to a Mombasa beach hotel for the second part of the holiday and it was around 26 degrees. Best holiday ever!

I would look into the temperatures at that time of year if you are considering any form of camping! Have been to that area in August before and it was hot. Certainly too hot for many outdoor adventures.
