My DH did the California trip pre we met in February and he says it was great but he wouldn't go in August due to heat. I've done holidays in Spain at 30C to 40C and its fine in a waterpark but can't survive even a half day trip but if you are more resistant than me its an interesting place according to DH.

When we went to Costa Rica in August it was about 27-30C max each day. It was rainy season but didn't bother us at all, only about an hour of rain a day and always 4pm or later so could time round it - quite like seeing rainforest with rain. Kids loved rain and found it slightly too hot but they also complained Finland in August was hot at 22C Only remember one thunderstorm and its quite fun to watch a rainforest with really heavy rain. We were over by Liberia. May have been lucky, does say online there's generally a few week gap in the rain season at end July/start August in Guanacaste.

Would you need access to healthcare out there as that would affect things? I always like the look of the Explore trips but never been on one - I just copy there ideas sometimes. TUI do some tours - we met someone who did Costa Rica one and they said only 4 of them on it and it was great. I just book day excursions and we do day on, day off with excursions.

Exodus do family wildlife holidays as do Families worldwide. We have used the latter company. Both are trustworthy and I doubt you will get cheaper. August is a great time to travel for a safari in Africa. It’s cheaper in the rainy seasons! There is always a premium for August!
