I have saved for 3 years to take lovely DS to NYC when he finishes his GCSEs Grin. I am so excited.

He will be 16, he is very academically minded and loves reading, science, good food etc. I need my own bed (lots of the hotels seem to have 1 small double and DS is very tall and I have arthritis and throw myself around a lot at night). Any ideas very much appreciated.

He has wanted to go since he was 5 and has NO IDEA I have saved up.

I am so excited. Can anyone help? I have travelled extensively but never been to NY, it's all new to me.

Any advice

Mwahaha. Cracks knuckles.

OK - budget, number of days, have you a hit list? Are there any films of TV shows set in NY that you love? When will you be going?

scattercushion17 · 15/09/2018 17:36

Not sure on hotels. I did top of the rock in the day an empire state at night to get the different perspectives. Haggle on ticket prices if you get a bus tour. Has he mentioned specific places?

BigSandyBalls2015 · 15/09/2018 17:39

We got a fab deal booking flights and hotel with BA. I was surprised it came up cheaper than Expedia etc. Stayed at the Hyatt Centric (very Central near Times Square but not noisy). Large room with two queen size beds.

This was Easter this year and it was approx £800 each for a week.

MrsGrindah · 15/09/2018 17:40

OMG I’m excited for you and your boy! When/how are you going to tell him?
NY is full of museums so you’ll have no problem there. You can take food tours of the city where you combine history and culture with great food. Go wander around Grand Central station - free and beautiful. And I think the Statue of Liberty is a must do. What a lucky boy

Kr3000 · 15/09/2018 17:44

I'd look for a big activity per day and focus your sight seeing around there, eg. Going over Brooklyn Bridge and pottering around the area, 5th Avenue and Central Park (5th Avenue has an amazing Barnes and Noble - perfect for book lovers!). The Statue of liberty boat tour was great, its good to get the earliest one you can as the statue and Ellis Island get really busy. We stayed on 8th Ave in a hotel which was fairly reasonably priced through Expedia (saw it later on Groupon for cheaper - grr!) and the location was great as it was near Times Square for sightseeing (its so much quieter mid week than at the weekend) . Take good walking shoes. We also resigned ourselves to the fact that we wouldn't see everything we wanted to so treated it as a taster holiday really!

Have a look at Radio City Apartments, various sizes and they have a sofa bed as well as a bedroom. Excellent value when we went but that was a few years ago.

Firstbornunicorn · 15/09/2018 17:46

DH and I went last year! It was the best holiday either of us have ever had.

We stayed in Pod 51, which was great value. The rooms are small, but they've made great use of the space. I understand the same company has now opened a Times Square branch. We stayed in a double with ensuite, but they had rooms with e.g. a double and a single, bunk beds and a single, 2 singles, just bunk beds, etc.

If your son is interested in history or anthropology, or even science, the American Museum of Natural History is an absolute must. DH and I literally spent an entire day in it. The exhibits are absolutely fascinating, and they have special planeterium shows etc at certain times of day.

We got a pass that allowed us to choose a number of activities. Not only did this save us money, but we also got to skip queues at most attractions.

A bus tour is a must. If you do this on your first day there, you'll get a feel of how the city is laid out, and probably see some attractions that you wouldn't have thought of visiting otherwise. Actually, I believe you can get tickets for the bus tour that last for a number of days, and a lot of people seem to use this as their main source of transport, as it stops right outside all the big tourist places.

9/11 museum is incredible but sad. Just realised your son was born post 9/11 though 😵

For views - we did both Rockefeller center and Empire state building. Preferred Rockefeller, but both are worth a go.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 15/09/2018 17:50

We stayed right in central park south and it was (obviously) overlooking the park but brilliant to explore all the way down to battery Park and also pop to the upper East and west sides.

Highline is great, but read up on it first as there aren't any signs sayinf what the landmarks are. Little Chinatown and little italy are next to each other so good to wander around. Greenwich is lovely too. Times Sq is worth a quick run through (too busy) and the flat iron district is interesting. Rockerfeller centre and St Particks, UN building, shopping (if you must). Central Park is lovely to wander through too. Flipping the bird at various Trump buildings (of which there is surprisingly many) is also a must.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 15/09/2018 17:51

Wall st, twin towers memorial, good places to eat...

AsAProfessionalFekko · 15/09/2018 17:52

Get a good map and mark your places on it!

partystress · 15/09/2018 17:54

Best tip I had was to pre-book to go up to the crown of the Statue of Liberty. You skip the queues and have an amazing view. Booking opens either 3 or 6 months ahead, can't remember which, and spaces go quickly.

womanintrousers · 15/09/2018 18:18

You're all amazing! Thank you for all these wonderful ideas.

@AsAProfessionalFekko I was thinking 4 nights, maybe a Thurs - Mon including his bday which is early July. I have £2000 saved Grin.

Films - he LOVES films. All films. We are very close and we watch a film together most Saturday and Sunday nights - so many favourites. He loves all the Marvel stuff, I hadn't really thought about the whole city being a film set!

I am SO SO SO EXCITED!! I am going to tell him shortly before the exams. If I can keep it secret, which is hard.

Thanks so much

He's food obsessed so a steak house dinner and diner breakfasts will be essential Grin

When I was plotting to save up I was a bit meh about it thinking oh it'll be hot and crowded and now I am BUZZING!!! Even thou its a long time off :)

Personally I would say dont stay at Times Square...I found it noisy, a bit grubby and full of overpriced touristy restaurants. We went to see it and take a photo though.
I love Greenwich village. We had a lovely weekend brunch there-full of locals which I always think is a good sign.
Have a look at ‘milk and cookies’ and ‘brunch boys’ on instagram. Brunch boys gives loads of good food recommendations.
Ulmon app is also really good for pinning places of interest. Works without data too.
It’s such an amazing place, I could witter on and on!

Paddybare · 15/09/2018 18:30

So exciting. Just to add another vote to looking our for hotel + flight deals. Virgin holidays/ BA holidays / Expedia among others all have particularly good deals from time to time.

womanintrousers · 15/09/2018 18:30

Films! What a genius to say that. I am preparing 6 months worth of NYC films in the run up. I wonder if he'll cotton on.....

MrsGrindah · 15/09/2018 18:31

Ooh and how are you going to tell him?!

TomHardysNextWife · 15/09/2018 18:32

We booked via BA.com and got an amazing deal. We stayed in the Conrad near the WTC site and it was gorgeous.

Def do the Staten Island ferry and see the statue of Liberty, Central Park, walk over Brooklyn Bridge. Shopping is fab - there are a lot of Century 21's around that are very good for bargains. The Met museum is fab too. Walk the High Line. Soho is fab for wandering and browsing. Tribeca too. 9/11 museum/WTC site is haunting and upsetting but we couldn't have visited without seeing out. Go to the obs deck in the Freedom tower.

Avoid Times Square. It's not a square and it's crap.
Avoid the Rockefeller centre. Also crap.

We're going back for my 50th in a couple of years. I'm so excited. It was like being on a film set tbh, you kept finding streets/views you recognise from films.

womanintrousers · 15/09/2018 18:32

Expedia have some amazing deals! I am googling and cross referencing. I want to book in the next few weeks so I know how much we have left to spend and if I need to squirrel away more.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 15/09/2018 18:32

We stayed at the Park Lane - really good price considering the cost of the hotels around there! Amazingly quiet - I won't stay close the times Sq, far too busy and noisy.

MrsGrindah · 15/09/2018 18:33

Have you budgeted for a bit of shopping? I don’t mean trawling around all the shops but it’s hard to resist in places like Nike town etc.

JoanFrenulum · 15/09/2018 18:34

While you're there--get the subway or buses or taxis. You think "oh it's only 10 blocks" and you'll walk it but it all adds up and you don't want to waste your energy on being tired. Boring advice I know :)

AsAProfessionalFekko · 15/09/2018 18:34

I loved the rockerfeller centre - if you do your homework before you can spot the artwork and the murals inside are amazing (they weren't the originals as the a set it went rogue and did an anti-capitalism rant and it was very offensive apparently!).

AsAProfessionalFekko · 15/09/2018 18:36

We always walk but there is just so much to see! If you plot your routes you can to knock off loads of sights...look out for things like the Brill Building on your way.
