Hi

Where should we stay in the lakes and is good for small children both the place itself and the acommodation. Looking at a mid week break in sept for 2 nights.

Even other suggestions elsewhere welcome but we are NW based and dont want to travel for too long 2 hours 2.5 hours max probably

Anywhere around the Windermere/Bowness/Ambleside/Keswick corridor should be fine.

It depends how small the children are?

Are you looking for hotels or self catering?

TheRealHousewifeofCheshire · 20/08/2018 18:49

Open to either acommodation really. Yes thats the sort of area we were initially thinking of. X

We've stayed at this one in Keswick before - any good?

puguin86 · 21/08/2018 18:10

We stayed in a cottage in Windermere called dizzy duck cottage

https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/VacationRentalReview-g186330-d7966841-DIZZYDUCKKCOTTAGEgassandelectriccfireencloseddpatioWiFiiincentreeof_Wi-Windermer.html

We had two toddlers with us and it was fine. We took stair gates. Meant we could walk lots of places and you get a permit to park outside the cottage.

TheRealHousewifeofCheshire · 21/08/2018 18:40

Grunaid that doesnt take me to a specific hotel im afraid just booking.com what was it called.

Whitecross bay in windermere is a good site. Plenty to do nearby and on site.

canihaveacoffeeplease · 21/08/2018 19:00

We go to the lakes a lot, sometimes self catering, sometimes hotel with our 1 year old and 3 year old.

Keswick is an absolute favourite, lovely walks, coffee shops, shops, pubs and more low key than bowness, grasmere, Ambleside etc. Lovely that you can walk from town to the lake, and there is a really easy walking path round the side of the lake.

Coniston is also fab, we stayed here for a week with a very young dd2 and it was AMAZING. There is a gorgeous bathroom, amazing views, super comfy and a pool room which was lots of fun when the kids went to bed. www.lakelovers.co.uk/property/the-farmhouse/

For shorter breaks of 2/3 nights our absolute favourite is The Swan at Newby Bridge. Super child friendly with a pool, walking trails and great food, and a fab steam train literally just down the road. Staff are all lovely. They have brilliant family rooms with either a bunk room off the main adult bedroom or lovely 2nd bedroom with dolls house, PlayStation and Beatrix potter books. The adult rooms and bathrooms are large and are gorgeous, you don't feel you're second best cos you're in a family room. And they bring the kids free milk and cookies at bedtime which is very sweet! www.swanhotel.com

For a day out, visit Allan Bank in Grasmere, the least stuffy, most child friendly NT place ever- they have a lovely huge art room which is all free, and a great kids playroom too. Grasmere is a great day trip in general.

Hope that helps, enjoy your break.

I was just coming on to recommend the Swan! Agree with everything above.

Also second Keswick as a great destination for kids. We've done self catering there a few times and find it perfect. Very manageable little town, with lovely cafes, walks, a boat across the lake and a leisure pool for when it rains!

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 21/08/2018 19:20

Fallbarrow Caravan Park (I think they have some lodges too) is a 5 minute walk into Bowness on Windermere where you can go boating/go on a tour boat thing or catch a boat ride to Ambleside etc, Beatrix Potter centre, big park, plenty cafes, restaurants, etc.

puguin86 · 21/08/2018 19:24

We liked the location

We have also stayed at The Lindeth Fell but minus the children !

We are going to stay at a cottage in Cartmel in Sep - we have started to book through Skye's Cottages - they have a lot of places in the Lakes

I found there's more to do round Windermere/ Bowness for children. Wray castle is good and the Beatrice Potter Peter Rabbit museum is good ! There's also a soft play in Bowness which was a god send when it rained all day Grin

TheRealHousewifeofCheshire · 21/08/2018 20:37

The swan looks amazing and good faciloties is there a pool though or do you have to book the spa to use it?

Not familiar with newby bridge is it nr beatrix potter museum or grassmere? Out of interest.

Yes we have veen to ambleside and keswick before for visits so know the towns and im familiarish with grassmere

I second Fallbarrow in Bowness. We've stayed in a beautiful lodge with the kids twice now and they've loved it. Everything is easily accessible.

Roystonv · 21/08/2018 20:47

The Swan is at the bottom of Lake Windermere. Newby Bridge is just a few houses so not really anywhere to look round shop wise nearby. Lovely area though and near to where you can get on the steamers on the lake and Beatrice Potter's house and Lakeside/Haverthwaite railway.

Shoite · 21/08/2018 20:49

HillCroft Park at Pooley Bridge, choice of accommodation and it’s a lovely site. Lots to do nearby too.

We stay in the camping pods every year

TheRealHousewifeofCheshire · 21/08/2018 21:09

Thank you theres the beatrix potter museum too. We only thinkong of a few nights away at min but yhink the swan looks perfect for a break after our wedding

Ah, sorry, crap at links! It was this one in Keswick.

Testing, testing - yep, looks like a link to me!

Grauniad · 22/08/2018 16:31

But you're probably sorted by now.

LittleCandle · 22/08/2018 16:43

We have stayed several times at a lovely little cottage in Uldale, north of Keswick, but it is small. It does sleep 6, as far as I recall. Nothing in the village apart from a dairy and a marvellous pub, but not too far away from anywhere. Try Cumbrian Cottages to check out self-catering.

mayhew · 22/08/2018 16:51

There's a beautiful miniature steam railway that runs from Ravenglass on the coast. It's a treat.

TheRealHousewifeofCheshire · 22/08/2018 16:58

What was it called candle

I know the railway what area is it nr?

The pub is called the Snooty Fox. It is great!

The railway is Ravenglass.

Have a look at the burnside spa and hotel on Windermere! It's great for family's and you can use the swimming pool from 9am so before you check in and till it closes after you check out. This is included in the price of your room.
They also have just finished their 1 and 2 bed apartments on site. We have stayed there a couple of times and are trying out the apartments in Oct.
The family rooms are lovely and big as well
