Have we any hope of a holiday abroad (or if not in UK) for 3 of us with £1000?

This is pathetic but dd is nearly 5 and we've never got enough money together to take her on a holiday. This year we've saved up £1000 and were thinking of finding a cottage in the Uk somewhere, but she's so desperate to go on a plane that I can't help dreaming we might manage somewhere for this kind of money. Is it a totally foolish dream?

We would need to go within the school holidays unfortunately.

And if it is do you have any tips for a good UK holiday?

fly down to cornwall and book holiday cotage for weekend.

canmummy · 25/05/2007 14:51

This is about all we pay for our holidays too and there's 5 of us! We're off to Spain next week. My dh books all of it seperately over the internet - books flights early (preferrably the day they come out - sign up for e-mails on jet2 etc). Books accomodation direct but cross-checks it with travel agents brochures to make sure it's ok. Hire a car to collect at the airport! Might be a bit late to do this for the summer but there's always next year....

MerryMarigold · 25/05/2007 14:53

try a last minute in half term. next week!

OrmIrian · 25/05/2007 14:53

Or fly to Scotland and rent a cottage? Depending on where you are of course.

Try Greece or Portugal (I know... not the Algarve, go to the North, nicer and cheaper). They are still the best value holiday destinations in the EU.

If you can get a cheap direct charter flight to a Greek Island, you should be fine because all three of you will be sleeping in one room. Try Lesbos (Mytilene) it's gorgeous.

fennel · 25/05/2007 14:56

There are lots of cheap flights - IME it's probably cheaper to get a cheap flight, even in school holidays, to somewhere where accomodation and living costs are cheaper, than to stay in the UK for a holiday.

We've had flights in school holidays for £6 one way to Spain. Accomodation and food and drink are cheap there too. You have to juggle around on the cheap flights websites to find the good deals.

CantSleepWontSleep · 25/05/2007 14:56

Have a look at places like Siblu (get MN discount and can pay with Tesco vouchers), Canvas and Eurocamp. Should be perfectly doable for £1k (you can have mobile home, so don't be put off by thought of tents).

oranges · 25/05/2007 14:56

look on thomascook.com - type your budget into the search engine, and it comes up with some really good deals

WideWebWitch · 25/05/2007 14:58

Oh, don't worry, it's not pathetic. I'm sure you can do something for £1k. I'd suggest:

leaving it until the last minute and looking on lastminute.com and/or Laterooms

Or do you live somewhere desirable? could you consider a houseswap?

Or you could fly cheaply to France and do Eurocamps or something. Or Ireland?

Stigaloid · 25/05/2007 15:01

go to www.expedia.co.uk

I just put in the dates 23 July to 6th August with 2 adults and 1 child age 5 going to costa del sol and loads came up for under £1000

There are loads of options out there and £1000 is more than enough to get 3 of you going somewhere

Enjoy!

We had a wonderful honeymoon with ds at Domaine du Pin de la Legue. It's a private mobile home site in the South of France. Easyjet to Nice and then it's about an hour's drive. We spent IIRC 564 euros for a large two-bed caravan on the site 3 yrs ago, plus about £80 for flights. It was great. If you fancy it, you need to contact the office directly - they put you in touch with owners who are looking to rent. Helps to try at least a bit of the email/phone call in French, but some of the owners are Brits (ours were Belgian). They have a great swimming complex and nice restaurant places on site but the site is generally quiet and a little 'older' in usual age groups. No massive waterslides, entertainment etc.

Having said that, now that ds is a little older (he was 3 months at the time) I would be much more leaning towards the waterslides end of the market and wd go for Eurocamp/Canvas like a shot if we could still afford this level of holiday.

choosyfloosy · 25/05/2007 15:02

ps 564 euros was for 2 weeks.

Can I make a shameless plug. I have a self catering apartment in Spain which I am fully intending to advertise on here with and offer a MN discount (I will do it this weekend, promise).

I have currently been sent loads of cheap deals for flights have a look at Sky Scanner they have released some 'late deal' type flights, Jet2, Flyglobespan and Ryan Air all fly to Murcia airport which is the nearest airport to our apartment.

If you want you can have a look at our apartment here and I would be happy to take a percentage (I need to double check just how much with DH) off for MNetters, just mail me through the website if you are interested.

If you don't fancy it, don't worry but I thought I would offer.

nappyaddict · 25/05/2007 15:03

yes, definitely. go self catering. last year we paid £150 for a flight each and we got a villa for £250 for 2 weeks.

noddyholder · 25/05/2007 15:04

We are going to france and corsica for 1k.Three of us Doing Eurostar with 2 nights in paris then fast new train to marseille where we get a ferry to corsica and stay for 4 nights ferry back to marseille and easyjet flight home Includes all hotels etc Bargain although I did book it myself

imaginaryfriend · 25/05/2007 15:07

These are fabulous suggestions, thanks so much!

I'm getting quite excited now.

Dd's talked about Greece an awful lot but I assumed it would be out of our league. Maybe not! South of France would be blissful.

But equally we could think of flying to Cornwall and hiring a cottage. I'm going to get dp to look through these suggestions later.

Thanks again.

And .. any more?

imaginaryfriend · 25/05/2007 15:08

I should've mentioned too that we can't drive ... Will that make travel particularly hard?

MrsSpoon · 25/05/2007 15:11

I can only speak for my own apartment but our letting agent can arrange airport transfers and if beaches etc are your thing and you don't mind a 15 min walk to the restaurants in the evening you would be fine. There is a bus service too.

MrsSpoon · 25/05/2007 15:12

Should have said if beaches etc are your thing there are a few within easy walking distance of the apartment (maybe 4 beaches) and more a short bus ride away.

nappyaddict · 25/05/2007 15:17

loads of cheap apartments on here

benalmadena, spain

do you mind having dd in with you or would you like her to have her own room?

snowwonder · 25/05/2007 15:18

mrs spoon,

your place looks fab.... i would be intrested in booking for next year, for me and my 2 children..

is it easy to organise flights and taxi from airport?

thanks

imaginaryfriend · 25/05/2007 15:20

Where is your apartment MrsSpoon?

I don't mind having dd in with us but ideally she'd have a slightly separate space so we can spend a bit of time together - me and dp haven't had a holiday in 6 years.
