Mauritius - injections?

flippyfloppy · 20/06/2018 21:53

Hi, we are off to Mauritius in 7 weeks with DD10 and DS7. I need to do my research to see if we need to get any injections, wondered if anyone has been recently and what injections (if any you opted for ) also, do you just go to GP? Thank you!

Our practice nurse runs a travel clinic at the gp surgery, maybe yours does too

You do not need injections to go to Mauritius.... have been many times.

dementedpixie · 22/06/2018 18:55

There are injections that are advised. They are not compulsory but may be useful

MulderitsmeX · 23/06/2018 23:10

I didn't get any but the mosquitos were almost invisible and I got bitten loads! Also I'm not sure how often they fog resorts as they didn't seem to when I was there.

flippyfloppy · 26/06/2018 22:50

Thanks all I've got a family appointment early July with practice nurse x

Does anyone know what documents are needed to fly to Mauritius with as a single parent?

glitterbiscuits · 06/08/2018 10:54

OP if you are reading this, I'd love your review of Mauritius as I'm tempted!

BasicUsername · 06/08/2018 11:55

@glitterbiscuits

I know you asked OP, but thought I'd answer your question with my view anyway!

I like Mauritius a lot.

The resorts and beaches are just beautiful, and there are a lot of things to do, but there is a lot of poverty and shanty town areas.

There are certain things that are a bit annoying, like taxis expect you to hire them for a full day, and they don't like to just take you to the shops (for example) and back at a reduced price / per mile fare. If you like to explore rather than do planned excursions, then I'd recommend hiring a car.

However, the people are lovely and the service everywhere is brilliant, we never had a bad word to say about anyone (other than taxi drivers!). The people are what make Mauritius extra special.

flippyfloppy · 06/08/2018 22:22

We opted for the injections!... I'll come back with a review @glitterbiscuits, we fly on Saturday, I can't wait I'm on a serious countdown now. Thanks for info @BasicUsername xx

We loved it! (And no jabs) Super friendly locals, they know how to do luxury resorts, beaches are fab but also try and get out to see some of the country outside of the resort - it's stunning. Loads of wildlife, the foods great, culture, history. Great country

Butterflycookie · 13/08/2018 15:55

You are probably there already but here are some suggestions. Make sure you see some traditional Sega dancing. They’ll usually have a performance at the resort (if you are staying at one). Go to Casela. It is a wildlife park. I did the Segway safari...it was amazing. I think however you have to be 12 to do it. You must also go the to caudan waterfront in the capital. There are lots of shops, restaurants and craft stalls there. There’s also a lot of history and there are brightly coloured umbrellas hanging in the sky. And remember to try the snack/ food stalls at the public beaches if you encounter any such as the mini pineapples in chilli and coconut water.

Most people speak English so you will be fine getting around the island.
You can also travel by bus it is very cheap. If you’re staying at a hotel they have many activities such as dolphin watching or glass bottom boat.
There is also the botanical gardens which is popular. Go to pereybere public beach. Take a day trip to the island of ile aux Cerfs.

I am sure there are many more things to do. I hope you have a great time Smile

Mauritius is on my bucket list. I would be interested to hear a review swell. its winter there right now and I want to know if the sea is warm enough to swim in, I would also want to fly direct but I think Tui only do 7 or 14 nights.

Hi there, we got back from Mauritius on Friday. Wow, what a place, truly breathtaking scenery, such happy, friendly people, and our Hotel was fantastic. I feel so lucky to have been able to visit the place! @ihatethecold it is just coming into their summer. It was in the 30's when we left, we were north of the Island and their weather is much more reliable than the South. We swam with dolphins in the sea which was a magical experience, visited a coffee plantation, a Hindu temple and the seven sands. The locals told us that their climate is pretty steady all year, the main difference is the length of their days, it was dark by 630pm when we were there. Couldn't rate our hotel highly enough, staff were fantastic, kids club provided some amazing experiences for the children - treasure hunts, creole lessons, henna tattoos. A la Carte Restaurant were all local and authentic and high end restaurant quality. First holiday in 10 years that myself and husband have come back feeling relaxed and refreshed, (maybe the rum cocktails helped with that!) we were waited on hand and foot. Would highly recommend if you are considering it, it is truly even better than what I could have imagined!

Sounds amazing.
Which hotel did you stay at?

KnotsInMay · 27/08/2018 16:26

Ihatethecold: the sea is completely comfortable to swim in at this time of year.

Caudon Waterfront in Port Louis is currently closed for some re-building.

In the North, don’t miss Mon Choisy public beach, a long sweeping bay.
In the South visit Black River Gorges National Park, Blue Bay is a lovely beach with glass bottom boats over the marine conservation park. If you are lucky you will see the turtles that live there.

From food stalls and vans look for roti (often sold as ‘farata’) , the little samosas and fresh fried gateaux piment, a bit like felafels. Also dholl puri, something of a national obsession but not many stalls have it. A rich roti, layered up with ground chick peas, and served with a veg curry. All these things will be very cheap.

KnotsInMay · 27/08/2018 16:33

“The locals told us that their climate is pretty steady all year,”

Hmmm. It is very humid in their summer, and much hotter than in winter. The Cyclone Season can also bring storms that can last 3 days. Christmas to March being peak risk season. In the humid summer there can be midday tropical showers, usually heavy but short. In winter the North and West are drier and less windy than the East coast. But the East coast beaches, Belle Mar, Palmar, Isle aux Cerfs are very lovely.

ihatethecold · 27/08/2018 16:33

Thank you Knots. As you can see from my username that I’m not good with being cold so the sea has to lovely and warm for me to venture in.

KnotsInMay · 27/08/2018 17:29

AirMauritius fly direct from London. Saves a long wait at Dubai on Emirates, but they are a bit shit.

Depends what your priorities are.

flippyfloppy · 27/08/2018 19:56

We stayed at Zilwa Attitiude, was fabulous! Two bedrooms family room, safe, clean, and very much encourage you to get out the resort and experience true Mauritius. X

@KnotsInMay I have roti withdrawal ☺️

glitterbiscuits · 28/08/2018 11:12

What were the beaches like? On the photos I have seen they look beautiful but really small.

flippyfloppy · 28/08/2018 22:35

We had private beaches on the resort, they were picture perfect white sand shelving into the turquoise sea, I'm afraid we didn't venture to any other beaches so I can't comment. Yes they were quite small, not sweeping stretches of beach. But they weren't busy, so clean and exactly how they look in the brochures! X
