New York City - how much was your flight?

Wigeon · 06/05/2018 21:31

Trying to cost up a possible trip to NYC next year. Unfortunately tied to school holidays as DH is a teacher. Would be grateful if anyone’s could share how much they’ve paid for a return flight, so I can see if the Skyscanner prices are comparable.

Looking at Easter holidays, on the basis that the weather won’t be hot and humid like summer, or freezing cold like winter! We’d like to go for a couple od weeks to justify spending all this money on the flights, so that rules out all other half term holiday times.

V grateful for any flight price info!

Mine was £380 return with Thomas cook. That was end of October though

Wigeon · 06/05/2018 22:09

Thanks for reply - so not in school holidays?

About £380 both times I've been, with Virgin Atlantic. Last time I went was end of Feb, before that was in Nov. I think late Autumn, and winter (after xmas and new year) is the cheapest. In summer flights can double in price

Ilovewheelychairs · 06/05/2018 22:12

£500ish each when we flew out to get married there in October half term 2017.

Ilovewheelychairs · 06/05/2018 22:13

That was with Norwegian Air btw who were by far our cheapest option.

bestbefore · 06/05/2018 22:16

Are you staying in New York for 2 weeks?
I would advise booking via Expedia or similar as they seemed to do a good deal on hotel plus flight

CocoaGin · 06/05/2018 22:21

We booked through BA in their sale and got a great deal. It's worth a look on their website.

A friend went a few years ago, got a flight to Dublin then on to NYC. Saved her around £140. Maybe worth looking at too.

Altwoo · 06/05/2018 22:36

In August, easily £800-£1000. Horrendous.

Wigeon · 06/05/2018 22:44

Thanks again. I probably should have put the thread title as “how much was your flight to NYC in school holidays”, given that makes such a difference.

We think we might stay a week in New York, then drive up to Boston, stopping in a few places, then a couple of nights in Boston. Not sure whether to fly in and out of NYC or into NYC and out of Boston. So might be possible to book hotel plus flight deal if you can stipulate that the hotel isn’t for the whole time - will investigate.

I've just booked for July - August (I'm from nyc so stay with my mum for 4 weeks during summer) for about £350 with a low cost airline called primera air. Birmingham - Newark. Last summer I paid slightly less than that with norweigan air, but it was from Belfast to a very random airport about 2.5 hours north of the city called Stewart. It meant I had to fly to Belfast and then get a rather long lift at the other end but it was very very cheap. Look at primera. Another cheap transatlantic airline is wow air, I think they fly London - nyc.

Aph413 · 06/05/2018 22:48

October half term £340 for an adult

welshgirlwannabe · 06/05/2018 22:49

Primera is now popping up in a banner ad at the bottom of my smart phone offering to get you there for £140 Grin

welshgirlwannabe · 06/05/2018 22:50

Yes flying from Dublin is almost always cheaper, but possibly a lot more hassle with connecting ferry/ onward flight times. They don't always match up.

FanSpamTastic · 06/05/2018 22:57

Look at Norwegian Airlines. They fly from Gatwick - times are not as convenient - one is early AM the other is early evening. But planes are new.

BubblesBuddy · 07/05/2018 00:30

Norwegian are awful. Be very wary. DDs flight back from NY was cancelled. The aircraft they used 10 hours later was leased: it belonged to a charter airline. No water in the toilets and no hot drinks on board, only water.

They were £90 cheaper than BA and this was in the Easter holidays. BA code share with American and have loads of flights every day. It’s worth paying a bit extra for a proper scheduled flight. Norwegian have one of the worst records for reliability. Avoid if you want to arrive on time!

TroubledLichen · 07/05/2018 02:46

You can get some v cheap flights connecting via Iceland. A friend manged to find flights for £290 with Wow Air. Norwegian will likely be your cheapest direct option.

Ilovewheelychairs · 07/05/2018 06:09

Our Norwegian flight was fabulous- 100 times better than any of our flights with Singapore Airlines we’ve just had!

AttilaTheMeerkat · 07/05/2018 09:24

Paid around £800 for return flights at Easter.

If given a choice of airport I would opt for Newark rather than JFK.

BubblesBuddy · 07/05/2018 09:36

I don’t see how any boring flight on Norwegian can be 100 times better than another airline? Surely if they arrive on time, have working toilets and enough entertainment channels and decent staff, what else do you want in economy? Seat space is never generous and food is always iffy. No airline has 100 times better economy seats than anyone else. You still won’t get off the airline first and you won’t get lie flat seats either! Club/Business is different where lounge availability, seats, sleep quality and meals count for more.

Singapore is often in the top 10 most popular airlines. Norwegian are cheap. There are risks with using them regarding punctuality. Cheap isn’t always the best idea. It also depends how handy Gatwick is too! Not handy for us but Heathrow is.

Also, NY is a little over 7 hours away. Go direct! Who has got the time to sit in Iceland or Dublin to save a few £££? You can make bigger savings on the hotel and meals when you get there.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 07/05/2018 09:41

£220 return Feb half term with Norwegian

user1486076969 · 07/05/2018 16:18

£558 with BA from LHR, outbound to NY and return from Washington so a bit more expensive than NY return. This is for the first week in July which I appreciate is ahead of most schools. Booked in January BA 'sale' (a bit cynical about the 'sale' element).

billybullshitterz1 · 07/05/2018 16:20

I paid £330 with BA Manchester via Heathrow to JFK went October half term it was boiling!

extinctspecies · 07/05/2018 16:25

if you are planning to go to Boston, be warned that hotels there are very expensive.

MakeItStopNeville · 07/05/2018 16:28

The absolute cheapest way, as others have said, is Norwegian. Especially if you're prepared to fly from Ireland or Scotland and fly into Stewart Airport instead of JFK/EWR.There's a shuttle bus into the city. BUT, it's a pita and Norwegian charge extra for everything.
