Suggestions for days out with DC in Yorkshire

We're travelling from Scotland to Tickton, near Beverley with our 5 DC, ages 4-16, for 4 nights in the second week of the Easter hols.

We're going to try to get to Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay, Scarborough, Filey and York whilst we're there.

Does anyone have any suggestions for interesting stuff or cool places we might not want to miss around those areas? It'll be our first time there.

Midweek update Smile

We made a couple of stops on the way down on Monday. After weaving through the beautiful Yorkshire Dales a bit too weavey for DD who barfed everywhere in bright sunshine, we had a picnic lunch at Aysgarth Falls. We skimmed stones, clambered around the Falls and generally marvelled at the natural beauty. Our next stop was Harrogate, which we all agreed was very pretty. We found a fab ice cream parlour and all had delicious gelato.

Yesterday we explored Beverley and the amazing Minster. I love history and was absolutely blown away by it. Next we went to York and took in Minster number 2! We loved the pretty, windy streets. The DC thought they looked like Diagon Alley, which was funny because we then came across 3 Harry Potter shops in the same street! We found a place that sold Yorkshire pudding wraps for lunch. Meat, gravy, stuffing and veg inside a big Yorkshire pudding, rolled into a wrap - yum!

Today we headed to Robin Hood's Bay. It was fantastic and you got a real feel for it's smuggler past. We visited the Dinosaur and Fossil Museum which the kids thought was really cool and the Robin Hood's Bay Museum which is situated in the old coroner's room and mortuary. This was staffed by a volunteer who introduced himself as 'Weirdy Beardy Man' who was brilliant, really chatty, full of interesting stories and gave the DC each pieces of jet he'd found on the beach. We had a nice pub lunch in the Bay Hotel overlooking the water and then went on to Whitby. We climbed the 199 steps and went to the Abbey. The DC were really interested in it's gothic-y Dracula connections and the view, old cemetery and cliffs at the top were stunning. We picked out a piece of Whitby jet jewellery for MIL's birthday and then the DC spotted the amusement arcade on the seafront. We let them play the 2p machines until DD caught 'tuppeny fever' and had a meltdown when we said no more pennies Grin. We walked along the pier and the water was rough and stormy and crashing against it. It was ace. We had planned to take the steam train to Grosmont, but it was super foggy, so we figured we wouldn't see much.

We've done a lot of driving which the DC haven't really enjoyed and the weather the last couple of days has been overcast and chilly, but we've had a brilliant time so far. The place we're staying in is amazing. I'll post a link at the end of the week if anyone's interested. Thanks again for everyone's input.

I’ve lived in Yorkshire forever and I love it, great to hear you’re having a good time up here and you’ve reminded me I should do some of things again!

Definitely Flamborough Head for the lighthouse, café, cliff walks and Selwick's Cove (down from the lighthouse), North Landing, South Landing and Thornwick Bay, (a couple of minutes away). Combine this with Bempton Cliffs Bird Sanctuary, and/or Scarborough Fair Collection nr Filey. Fish and chips from Brown's Rooms in Filey, (eat in or takeaway), or 149 Marston Road, between Flamborough/Bempton and Bridlington. Sterchi's is a brilliant chocolate shop in Filey too. I've tried to gather a few things together for you to reduce the driving. All highly recommended, tried and tested many times by all the family here. Glad you're enjoying Yorkshire so far, OP.

Just to add, Yorkshire Wildlife Park nr Doncaster is brilliant, but a bit far for you in the time you've got OP.

Rest of week update Smile

Thursday we went to Scarborough, Filey, Bridlington and Bempton Cliffs, although the last three were more whistle stop tours as DD16 was being a horror and DH and I were losing the will. Probably our least favourite day. I was really looking forward to Scarborough but I have to admit I wasn't a fan. We spent ages looking for the Scarborough Fair Collection that neither the sat nav or maps app on our phones could deliver us to. When we eventually found it, it was inside a holiday park, which was a bit weird. Reviews on TripAdvisor rave about it, but despite our best efforts, we were in and out in half an hour, so it was a bit pricey and disappointing. I did get a ride on the ghost train and the kids went on the dodgems which we enjoyed though.

We drove home via the Lakes yesterday and stopped for lunch at the George & Dragon, which we'd been to a few years ago and it was just as good as we'd remembered.

It's been a great week. We saw tons of new things and places and spent lots of time outdoors. Thanks again everyone for the part you played in our lovely holiday Smile. This is where we stayed. Would absolutely recommend.

Half an hour in the Scarborough Fair Collection OP?! Shock

We've been several times now and can still spend a couple of hours there. I think some people go expecting a theme park or something much larger, and are disappointed. It's certainly not a big place. It's a private vintage/heritage collection run mainly by volunteers. We find it quirky, a bit different, friendly and quaint. It gives a slower pace of life for a couple of hours, but then we do only go when it's not busy. It's true that you do access it via the Flowers of May holiday park, but it's set off to the side of that, not in the middle. The beautiful Carousel alone lifts the spirits, as does tea, sandwiches and cake from the café volunteers. I also know that they're very welcoming and accommodating to disabled visitors, including the learning disabled. The website is worth a look for anyone thinking of visiting, and ring ahead with any individual queries.

Sorry you didn't enjoy it or your day as much OP. It's probably not surprising given you were having a challenging time with a teen DC and losing the will to live! It sounds like you had a lovely holiday in Yorkshire otherwise though. Smile

Know what you mean about Scarborough but Scarborough Fair is really practically in Filey!

For active kids, and for those with deep pockets, Alpamare in Scarborough North Bay is brilliant (waterpark with super warm outdoor infinity pools, slides and wave pool) Also Sealife, crazy golf, the castle, mini steam train, the beach, the naval sea battle in summer at the park - all good.

Also the North Yorkshire Aqua park outside Scarborough has Wipeout style inflatables on a lake - massive fun! Would really recommend this!
