Hi want to take DH away for a couple of nights in October for his birthday.
Had originally thought about sorrento but a couple of people have mentioned Lisbon and how nice it is.
Anyone been ? What's it like ?

Warm, easy to get around, beautiful city, loads to see and do, lovely food, train to seaside at Estoril /Cascais. Nicest city break I've had.

borntobequiet · 25/02/2018 09:11

And not expensive.

BestIsWest · 25/02/2018 09:12

I love Lisbon. Lots of culture, warm weather, great food. We stayed in Cascais which was also fab.

IncidentalAnarchist · 25/02/2018 09:13

Beautiful, warm, friendly, inexpensive, wonderful

Purplerain101 · 25/02/2018 09:14

It’s fantastic! Probaly my favourite European city and I’ve been to a lot of them. It’s beautiful, lots to see, amazing restaurants and cafes everywhere, easy to get around and busy with a great atmosphere but not completely rammed with tourists like some other cities like Venice or Paris. It has more of a “big town” feel to it rather than a city

IggyAce · 25/02/2018 09:14

Friends just been with her DH and 2 DCs (5&1) they had a great time. They found it really easy to get around and she loved Cascais. From her pictures and what her review we are considering it for a city break with our DCs.

LottieandSeth · 25/02/2018 09:15

Thank you - which part of the city is the nicest to stay in ?

Wonderful. The friendliest capital city I have been to. Loads to see and do.

ZenNudist · 25/02/2018 09:19

I liked it and think its a great choice for a city break. I would say its better for sightseeing than Sorrento but Sorrento is a great base for a longer holiday.

We stayed 35mins away on a long holiday. We did a few trips into Lisbon. Theres a lovely castle. There are fab old trams to take as a way to see the city. It was too hot and crowded when we went in August, October much better for sightseeing.

We got the hop on hop off bus trips to cover ground but got off early on the way back and walked across a central section of the city.

Theres a lovely bit with old buildings and a monastery. We couldnt be bothered getting off in August heat and queuing for entry. In October it would be better.

Its a very cool city. Its got a bit of an urban makeshift vibe. We went to a collection of hip restaurants shops and bars under the bridge which was fun.

I liked the barrio alto district for bars and restaurants

Id say go and try it. Food is fab in Portugal. The airport in lisbon is really essy to navigate and its not too far into town whereas naples is a pain in the arse and its quite a way to Sorrento.

bonjovigirl · 25/02/2018 09:21

Think for two days Lisbon a better bet. Great food, weather, public transport for getting around. Lovely historic city with lots to see. The freshly made Pastel De Nata (custard tarts) were amazing. I might go back for those alone!

When DH and I went to Sorrento we used it more as a base to then see Capri, Pompeii so a lot more travelling about.

BestIsWest · 25/02/2018 09:22

Actually, I know you’re looking for a city break OP but I wanted to add that it was one of the nicest family holidays we had with teenagers. We stayed in Cascais with is a lovely seaside resort and did lots of day trips into Lisbon on the train (25 minutes) and Sintra.

We ‘ve been back several times.

The Gulbenkian is wort a visit if you do go.

peachypetite · 25/02/2018 09:22

Do a day trip to Sinatra
Go to the home of the Portuguese custard tarts: pasteisdebelem.pt/en/

peachypetite · 25/02/2018 09:23

that should say Sintra

LoniceraJaponica · 25/02/2018 10:02

There is so much to see and do in Lisbon itself that, while Sintra is a great day trip, you would need more than a couple of days there to do them both justice. I highly recommend getting the tram out to Belem as well.

Justanotherzombie · 25/02/2018 10:05

Boring as fuck. I'm glad other people enjoyed it because I've been many places and Lisbon was the place I liked the least. I may have been influenced by not being able to find anywhere to buy a bottle of water in the searing heat with a raging hangover! But beyond that I saw/felt nothing that made me think 'this is a fab city'.

LoniceraJaponica · 25/02/2018 10:13

How can anyone find Lisbon boring? Shock.
Do you not enjoy sightseeing, places with history and character and good food?

Purplerain101 · 25/02/2018 10:41

Don’t really get how you can find Lisbon boring, especially if just going for a weekend. There’s so much to see and it’s such a beautiful place to just walk around. If you’re a foodie then it has some of the best cafes I’ve ever been to

TerfyMcTerface · 25/02/2018 11:03

Take ear plugs! The partying goes on until 5am (and I wasn’t even staying in the area known for partying). I’d booked an Airbnb for 5 nights and ended up leaving two nights early and booking into an hotel.

It’s a lovely city though, and the food is great. If you can manage a day in Sintra, that is gorgeous too.

Meandmy4 · 25/02/2018 11:05

It starts with L and ends in n x

LottieandSeth · 25/02/2018 15:11

Thank you I'm looking at flights !

Absolutely lovely. Try the time out food msrket for fab dinner. Very laid back but beautiful city.

Misty9 · 25/02/2018 16:17

We loved it when we went with dc last year. We stayed in campo del ourique which is near the basilica and also the famous tram route (17?)

Lunaballoon · 25/02/2018 16:28

Another big fan of Lisbon here! October’s a perfect time to visit but I think you’d need more than a couple of nights to do it justice and see nearby attractions as others have mentioned like Belem and Sintra.

Costacoffeeplease · 25/02/2018 16:43

It’s lovely, compact but lots to see and do. The Hotel Mundial is in a great location, very central
