Long weekend away for DD and I before she heads off to Uni and to celebrate her 18th

Ok so not very festive, but I've seen a few airlines/holiday companies have started their sales.

Dd is off to uni in September which is also her 18th birthday. I was thinking a few days away just the 2 of us would be quite nice. We will have a separate family holiday in the summer.

It will likely be the first week in September and for 4 days so just looking for some ideas of where would be nice.

So far I've considered Santorini, Croatia and Copenhagen but not quite sure, so any suggestions or thoughts on either of these would be much appreciated. Smile

What’s she going to be studying ? Is there anywhere in particular that would fit in with her studies / interests ?

Allthebestnamesareused · 24/12/2017 17:15

Barcelona would be my choice.

But Dubrovnik was great too.

frenchfancy · 24/12/2017 17:15

Malaga is unexpectedly nice. Lovely old town and the beach and restaurants are great.

AdaColeman · 24/12/2017 17:19

Rome would be fab, lots to see, plenty of places to eat.

DrivinHomeForXmas · 24/12/2017 17:31

Thank you, some great suggestions. We have been to Barcelona for the day and did really enjoy it, so maybe a longer stay would be good.

I will look into the other suggestions too thanks.

She will be studying politics and history, she also like places with nice views and scenery (or so she told me when I asked if there was anywhere in particular she would like to go! 😂) beyond that she has no preference.

Paris? Toulouse is fab, or Nice.

pollyx · 24/12/2017 18:14

What about somewhere in Italy, such as Sorrento (and go to Capri for a day), Venice, or Tuscany. The views are absolutely stunning with great food.

JennyHolzersGhost · 24/12/2017 18:17

Hmm politics and history offers great scope for some interesting places ! As the others have said, Rome would be fantastic. Paris. Venice. All very interesting in political, historic and tourist terms !
I went to Prague with my Mum at a similar age and it was a great trip.

NorthernLurker · 24/12/2017 19:58

I took dd1 to Rome after her a levels. We had a great time.

Eastpoint · 24/12/2017 20:00

Dd (19) & I went to Venice in September for a few nights. Really good, lots to see & delicious food. It was still quite busy.

titchy · 24/12/2017 20:01

Venice or Paris. Or NY if budget allows.

museumum · 24/12/2017 20:03

Barcelona was my first thought.
Malaga town is great too (full of cafes and art and not at all costa del tacky).

Ylvamoon · 24/12/2017 20:06

An other vote for Rome!

rocky4 · 24/12/2017 20:09

Prague is lovely.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 24/12/2017 20:10

Berlin, Budapest, Prague

FiveGoMadInDorset · 24/12/2017 20:10

Venice

Ritualunion · 24/12/2017 20:13

Another vote for Rome! I went with my Mum after college/before uni - we had a lot of fun and we loved the history and food!

BeachysFlipFlops · 24/12/2017 20:19

Lisbon???

Chopchopbusybusy · 24/12/2017 20:22

What about somewhere in the U.K.?
Edinburgh or London? Depends where you live of course.

DrivinHomeForXmas · 26/12/2017 20:51

Brilliant thank you, lots of great suggestions, I'll run them past DD.

We are not to far from Edinburgh and we have family fairly near London so have been to both a few times, we also had a family break to New York a few years ago, but we've enjoyed all 3 Smile

I went to Stockholm with DS (12) this year and absolutely loved it. We have lived in London, Edinburgh, Paris and Rome and visited a few other cities, and it was my favourite out of all of them. However I do think it depends what you want to see and do. For a short visit Rome is hard to beat for history and food, Paris for museums, Nice (very close to where I live now), for a relaxing break with some sun and sea. Amsterdam is also somewhere I always enjoy.

Stockholm had a lovely old town, some interesting museums, quirky restaurants, lovely friendly people, and a small city you could walk around easily. We stayed on a boat which was great, really unusual with an interesting history and not too expensive.

Worsethingshappenatsea · 27/12/2017 00:25

New York ?

EveryDayIsLikeMonday · 27/12/2017 18:35

Amsterdam? My dd has requested a trip there for her 18th...for the art and history, not the dodgy stuff! Loads of good museums and art galleries, Anne Frank museum etc.

DrivinHomeForXmas · 27/12/2017 18:38

Thanks again, lots of recommendations for Rome so I will certainly look at pricing that up. Smile

It will be nice to just get a trip away the 2 of us. I am really looking forward to it.
