What is a nice area of France to go to?

Looking at going camping in France for a week.

Somewhere with nice, easy walking in the area, good scenery. We have a 6yo dd so somewhere where there would be attractions/days out aimed at her age group.

Any ideas?

In the South of France we like the area around Frejus.

In Northern France we tend to head towards areas around Le Touquet on the coast.

The area around DLP, etc. isn't so great we have found - although you could base yourself close to Champagne and travel in for just a day or two.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 18/04/2007 20:22

Mmmmm she does tend to get bored being dragged round NT properties, so maybe one day at a fortress/chateau might be acceptable, but no more.

depends how far you want to drive.

Brittany - like a french cornwall (rock pools and pedbbles rather than sand)
Vendee - loads of long beaches, good for hot sunny lazing, not many places to 'visit'

Loire - fantastic the chateux can be great for kids, but there is also cycling, walking, canoeing, zoos and loads to do.

Dordogne - we are going there this year, seems a great mix between river and beach, towns, prehistoric caves and beautiful scenary

South of France - too hot IMHO and beachy I wouldn't choose to go there.

Hulababy · 18/04/2007 20:40

DLP is east of Paris.

South of France is very hot, but beautiful and with lots to do. We don't do the beaches. We like the cafe type culture though - sitting by the harbour, etc. Big water park there too. But we do go down to coast at Fregus in evening for meal and walk on rocks, etc.

ArcticRoll · 18/04/2007 20:43

Brittany much nicer than la Vendee imo.
Beaches were long and sandy in the Vendee but horrible strip developments and not much character.

thirtysomething · 18/04/2007 20:55

Charente good with kids but perhaps a tad boring for adults? Lots of nice lakes in Dordogne/Limousin often have nice sandy beaches and little playgrounds, less crowded in July/August.
Brittany fab for kids of any age.
Lots of good campsites with kids' facilities in Brittany/Vendee (but agree Vendee doesn't have much character). Ardeche (South of Lyon going down towards South) is stunning with lots of shallow river beaches, but crowded in high season. Are around Perpignan very nice with long sandy beaches, umpteen campsites and old towns in the hills

Marina · 18/04/2007 21:00

If you go to the Vendee then you are within striking distance of both Le Puy du Fou (sort of French theme park with lots of history) and Futuroscope.
The Marais Poitevin/Venise Verte round Niort etc, also in that area/inland, is fascinating, damp, beautiful and not too touristy
Agree with pruni. Whether being chased by Vaches de Salers up the side of a volcano near Aurillac or drifting on a punt through the hortillonages at Amiens, or devouring a plateau de fruits de mer by the waterfront in La Rochelle, the whole country is lovely.
You'll have to be more specific about the scenery I think

Camping La Sirene in Argeles sur Mer is a fab site for kids & absolutely loads to do in the locality. Its almost on the Spanish border on the Mediterranean coast. Fantastic pool complex and loads of activities on site. Have a look at www.frenchmobilehomes.com for privately owned accomodation in La Sirene. It's fairly easy to get to Girona is an hour away, Carcassonne 1.5hrs and Perpignan only 220 mins.

cailin2 · 18/04/2007 21:28

Sorry about that, Perpignan is 20 mins not 220 !!!

CrocOfShit · 18/04/2007 21:30

Has anyone been to Nice? What's it like?

CrocOfShit · 18/04/2007 21:32

Crunchie, not all of Brittany is pebbles and rock pools! There are some beautiful beaches where the sand is fine and shite, almost like talc. The beach near Dossen-Santec just outside Roscoff, for example. Some fabulous family campsites there too.

CrocOfShit · 18/04/2007 21:33

white, not shite

Marina · 18/04/2007 21:33

fine and shite...?
Loads of yellow sand on the Presqu'Ile de Quiberon and round the Golfe de Morbihan in the south too...

exbury · 18/04/2007 21:34

Another vote for the Vendee - but stay North of La Rochelle.

Marina · 18/04/2007 21:34

x-posted but you did have me worried there .

Marina · 18/04/2007 21:35

Scummy had a blast in Marseille recently but I think they were visiting friends which must have helped a lot

saggers · 18/04/2007 21:36

The area around Annecy, in the Alps is beautiful, and not too hot.
Also agree with thirtysomething about Limousin/Dordogne. My DDs love the lakes with beaches there.
Provence is beautiful, but mabe not so much for children there, unless you're camping.

exbury · 18/04/2007 21:55

Dordogne is hell on earth in the summer. Constant traffic jams and way too many dutch people driving slowly with caravans. (no offence to the Dutch in general, just those with caravans )

Greensleeves · 18/04/2007 21:56

So has anyone been to Nice?
