Dp travels to Ireland quite regularly and he says that he has never actually been asked to show his passport; but he does think that you are supposed to have a current passport.

Marina · 05/04/2007 23:42

I think it's OK YG. Apparently according to something I just googled you have to have it for anywhere EXCEPT Eire
here if you want to check

NannyL · 05/04/2007 23:47

but you may need valid photo ID, and i doubt your DD has acceptable alternative photo ID does she? (ie a driving license)

once a passport has expired it does not count as photo id apparently, even if you are only flying betwee english airports

NannyL · 05/04/2007 23:48

ofcourse some airlines may use discretion, guess it dpends how pedantic they are being.

You need it. I travel to Ireland very frequently and I always need it. You can use other photo ID but recently (last few years) they have got real strict about it, adn tend to really only take passports.

For an emergency situation - you can travel to NI without a passport (you can use other photo ID), then just get a train or bus down to the south (We had to do this once when one of the guys in my band lost his passport and we had a gig we had to get to! Took bloody ages but we got there!)

Saying that, I have always gone to Dublin airport, where they are fairly strict on security. Other airports may be different.

TBH, you might be alright with the expored passport, since its for a child? They could be lenient..

Who are you flying with ????////

SherlockLGJ · 05/04/2007 23:51

Where are you flying into ??

BassMama · 05/04/2007 23:52

Sorry Yorkie - x posted.

Sorry to hear you cant go, i didnt think you'd be able to.

Would my NI idea be feasible?

flea · 05/04/2007 23:52

i did fly to UK and back to Ireland on my work id! There is no legal requirement for a passport between Eng and Ireland. You will need photo id for the airline company if you are not checking in online and you will need to show some photo id to immigration in ireland but being honest I have never been asked for photo id for my kids between Eng and Ireland at all, and I have flown with them 2 to 3 times to the UK in the last 12 months.

With whom ??????????

Are Aer Arran flying from the UK now ??

flea · 05/04/2007 23:56

honestly yorkiegirl I have never been asked to produce photo id for any of my kids flying between eng and ireland. I have sometimes carried their birthcerts with me just in case but have never been asked.. In fact I fly to the UK and back every single week and most times I havent even been asked for ID.. Sometimes I wonder where the heightened security really is!

NannyL · 05/04/2007 23:56

could u sail across on a ferry and then drive the rest of the way?

i dont think you need photo id for ferries (or do you?)

guess worst case scenario is they dont let you on plane?

worth a try! i reckon

SherlockLGJ · 05/04/2007 23:59

Right

We fly with Ryanair (otherwise known as if we can make a buck out of you we will)

DS has not had a passport, for 12 months now, we take the expired one but the fact that we both have PPorts/Id covers him.
