DS has a cold - we're flying tomorrow - will we have to open sachets of calpol at security?

Says it all really - the advice from the airport is contradictory.

On the one hand, it says that here you can take calpol etc. through - then on this document, it says that medicines have to be verified.

I was going to take some sachets of Calpol and Nurofen (DS is sounding like a cross between Darth Vader and Lassie at the moment), but if I'm going to have to open them all to do a taste test, that'll defeat the object of the exercise!

Additionally, does anybody know if they sell Medised in the airside pharmacy at Heathrow? If they do, that'll be the solution, I think!

Can't you take a bottle of calpol instead? That way you can test it and still have plenty to give ds.

SoupDreggon · 31/03/2007 20:23

No, you won't have to open sachets of calpol.

Nikki76 · 31/03/2007 20:24

Could you get the no of the pharmacy at Heathrow and check? I'm giving DS neurofen before we fly to stop the pain of take off - he hasn't got a cold but its a tip we've been given to make take off easier for them, so I'm just taking a bottle of neurofen with me and tasting it there. You could always leave sachets in the suitcase for carrying out and about when on hols.....

SoupDreggon · 31/03/2007 20:24

I didn't at Gatwick anyway.

pollyanna · 31/03/2007 20:25

I went through 2 weeks ago and didn't have to open the sachets. I was allowed to take water through for dd3 (aged 2) too.

pollyanna · 31/03/2007 20:26

actually I was Gatwick too.

gemmiegoatlegs · 31/03/2007 20:27

they let my SIL take cartons of baby milk through so I don't see why not

Carmenere · 31/03/2007 20:28

You just have to put it into the clear plastic bags(the sachet that is).

Our bottle of Calpol is 150ml - so too big to be taken through security ... I may go to pharmacy tomorrow and try to get smaller bottles of stuff.

Thanks for the tip about nurofen - I'm going to try to get ds to drink some water when we take off - he's not a fan of sucky sweets, but with a cold, I imagine it'll be quite painful for him.

Don't forget that there is plenty of Calpol to be purchased in Boots airside in Gatwick.

ejt1764 · 31/03/2007 20:32

Is there a Boots (or another pharmacy) airside at Heathrow too?

Old wives but it works for ears especailly if have a cold. Take plastic cup and put in folded paper serviette then get c crew to put in some hot water so it is absorbed ..NOT dripping !!!. Then hold over ear it does ease. Along with the sweet sucking , gum chewing and pretending to blow yr nose.
I took Calpol through no problem.

Nikki76 · 31/03/2007 20:35

I've just googled boots the pharmacist+heathrow for you and it said there is a boots at every terminal and the one in terminal one dispenses prescriptions as well so that should set your mind at ease - and mine if they refuse the neurofen when I fly on tues!

Nikki76 · 31/03/2007 20:36

pharmacy rather!

ejt1764 · 31/03/2007 20:37

Thanks for info on Boots - decided to phone them, and not only did they confirm that they stock Medised, they're putting a bottle to one side for me (under my name), just in case there's a rush on tomorrow for some reason!

Fantastic customer service!!

Thanks also for the tip on reducing pressure in the ears!

The key thing about going through security is the volume of any one thing. Nothing can be above 100ml. So sachets will be fine (about 5ml each?). TBH, I've been though security with Calpol sachets without even thinking of them as liquids and no-one questioned me! They will give you a clear plastic bag at security to put all your liquid stuff in and it all needs to fit into the bag.

SoupDreggon · 31/03/2007 20:43

"Nothing can be above 100ml." doesn't apply to water for babies though, you just have to drink some.

Also, the containers can't hold more than 100ml so a partially filled bigger bottle isn't any good. Again, doesn't apply to a baby's cup/bottle.

SoupDreggon · 31/03/2007 20:43

Pastes have to go in the bag too so vaseline, nappy cream, lipsalve...

PavlovtheBunnyGirl · 31/03/2007 20:44

I flew from heathrow to San Fransisco. I took sachets of calpol, I did not have to open them up at all. I also took a bottle of medicine on way back, just had to put it in a tray through hand luggage check. I also had bottles of milk, just had to make them transparant and in the trays.

ejt1764 · 31/03/2007 20:44

ooooh - hadn't thought about lipsalve!

Nikki76 · 31/03/2007 20:45

Ughh....hope I won't be expected to taste sudocrem??!!!

PavlovtheBunnyGirl · 31/03/2007 20:45

Sachets of calpol are medicine, you can take medicine through, as far as I know.

SoupDreggon · 31/03/2007 20:47

Snort! No, they don't make you taste sudocrem

ejt1764 · 31/03/2007 20:54

sorry - in my befuddled state, I just read that as "they don't make you snort sudocrem"

What does that say about my state of mind right now?

Perhaps I should go and tackle the ironing!

Phew!! Getting well cheesed off with all these regulations...I bet they don't check the big luggage which doesn't make sense as that is going on the plane too!! I think its just an excuse for security guards with small cocks to feel manly and useful!!
