Taking food abroad

intheholidaymood · 13/08/2017 08:31

So we are travelling to Tenerife in a couple of week on a low budget self catering holiday. I have packed the usual pasta, coffee, biscuits etc. Are there any restrictions on taking few packs of bacon in hold luggage and block of cheese? I was planning to put between ice blocks to keep cool.

I know it's just as cheap to buy there but wanted to save as much money as poss.

My fil does this he gets the bacon shrink wrapped at the butchers then freezes it

BertrandRussell · 13/08/2017 08:38

Am I being thick? Why is it cheaper to take food from this country rather than buy it there?

2014newme · 13/08/2017 08:44

Hilarious, taking cheese pasta and bacon to tenerife.

pinkmagic1 · 13/08/2017 08:46

Just buy it in Tenerife!

happystory · 13/08/2017 08:48

I think those things will be cheaper there. Take them out and save them for when you get back. One thing you must take tho is enough sun cream, it's always hellishly overpriced in tourist resorts...

2014newme · 13/08/2017 08:58

And also take insect repellent

Dailystuck71 · 13/08/2017 08:59

Just buy when you are there. They do have supermarkets and it's not expensive.

insancerre · 13/08/2017 09:00

It's Tenerife.
They have shops
No need to take cheese or bacon

sooperdooper · 13/08/2017 09:04

Ugh don't take cheese & bacon just buy it there, it'll be just as cheap in the supermarket there & won't be manky from being in your case for hours

It won't save you any money taking it with you

insancerre · 13/08/2017 09:05

You would be better to just have hand luggage and not pay for hold bags rather than taking food with you

Hoppinggreen · 13/08/2017 09:06

Not sure about Tenerife but we have a property in mainland Spain and the supermarkets there are roughly a third cheaper then here and some stuff even less.
Unless it's something you really won't be able to get there I wouldn't bother

intheholidaymood · 13/08/2017 17:32

2014bew I'm so happy I've brighten up your day if you found my post hilarious .

The last thing I want to do when I go on holiday is a big food shop, I've bought most stuff pasta, beans etc from pound shop.

Thanks for the replies informing me it is cheaper in Tenerife, I've never food shopped there before so wouldn't know Smile

Do people really take food on holiday with them?? I hope your suitcase doesn't get stuck somewhere hot...

intheholidaymood · 13/08/2017 17:55

I'm not packing a shopping trolley with fruit, meat, veg or fish Hmm just dried pasta, couple of tins of beans, biscuits and was wondering about bacon. Surely I'm not the only person ever to do this. I've been on other forums and haven't seen anything like this. It's a simple question Confused

IAmTheDragon · 13/08/2017 17:59

Buy it there, honestly!

Bumply · 13/08/2017 18:03

I take pasta and biscuits, but they're GF for DS2 so I don't have to worry about sourcing GF food in the first day or two.
I might take earl grey tea bags and marmite if I didn't think they'd be easily available, or if I only wanted the quantity I'd use in a week rather than buying more than I need abroad.
Wouldn't bother with other stuff.
Some countries have restrictions on what you can bring in food wise.

Babipotjam · 13/08/2017 18:07

op I'm sure you would be allowed but I can see you getting stopped. Also what if flight was delayed?

Unescorted · 13/08/2017 18:13

Bacon is fine to take - freeze it first. Cheese will be fine too.
The best savings to be had are those things that you only use a small amount of but can only buy in more than you can use in a week quantities eg bay leaves, pepper, stock cubes tea etc. I usually take a spice box so it is easier to eat in. Also washing up liquid and some dishwasher tablets - just incase there aren't any in the apartment.

Hope you have a lovely holiday.

fluffiphlox · 13/08/2017 18:15

You've reminded me of my dad who, when we first started going to France in the late sixties, used to take tinned butter. Can you imagine what that was like when opened in the middle of summer?! Seriously don't waste your weight allowance on food. They have plenty of supermarkets and restaurants on Tenerife. Take any medication and suncream and buy the rest there.

Fekko · 13/08/2017 18:18

Cool packs will be heavy though. I am guilty of taking food to Italy as we were renting a villa beyond the back of beyond and would get there late evening so would miss the shops. Customs were most amused to open my bag and find a packet of spaghetti and jar of pasta sauce.

Yogagirl123 · 13/08/2017 18:20

I always take bits and bobs with me OP, my friends thought it was hilarious that I take English mustard, salad cream etc! I always take teabags, peppermint tea, dishwasher tablets, a tiny box of washing powder and my own coffee mugs, if I have space. Makes you feel more at home. Have a fab holiday.

pinkstripeycat · 13/08/2017 18:24

We always take food to France because it saves us a fortune and we drive so have stops and picnics on the way. Always buy perishables (cold meats and cheese) in France though because they are far more delicous

intheholidaymood · 13/08/2017 18:33

Unescorted thanks for reminding me of washing up liquid, something I always forget. And thank you we will have a great time Smile

Yes I'll pop a couple of mugs in, hotels always provided those small little cups you only get a sip out of.

We bought a couple of cheap mugs this year in Lanzarote and left them there.
