Not sure about Nice (hopefully someone will see this and offer suggestions), but if you can, go to Antibes and see the Picasso museum. It is beautiful.

chipsandpeas · 04/07/2017 21:15

walk along the prom, its a lovely walk

train to monaco or cannes

Joneseygirl77 · 04/07/2017 21:18

Nice is a great city to visit as you can have lots of days out by bus/ train. I would definitely recommend getting bus to St Paul de Vence and Vence, bus to Villefranche sur Mer, train to Monaco and Ventimiglia (over in Italy), Eze is also a great day out. I would advise venturing out to these places if you can as the buses/trains are reasonably priced and it's very easy to get around the coast.

Within Nice itself, exploring old town is great and I would also recommend walking along promenade to the marine area. We've also hired sunbeds for a day when weather has been very hot. Matisse museum and Chagall museum are also good to explore.

Enjoy it's one of my favourite cities!

Adults, children? What do you enjoy doing on holiday ssd? Lots of things in and around Nice for different tastes and ages.

superram · 04/07/2017 22:27

We flew to Monte Carlo in a helicopter (then got train back). Pool, beach, are amazing seafood and went to Antibes. Loved it.

Sittinginthesun · 04/07/2017 22:31

Nice is great just for exploring. If you want a but of art, the Matisse Museum is good.

Traffic is a nightmare, but there is a train that runs along the coast towards Italy, and Villefrance sur Mer, Menton and Monaco are all worth a trip.

Wander the old town & the Promenade. If your kids are smaller there is a great water fountain park off Place Messina. Train to Villefranche - go early as the beach isn't huge and gets busy - if your kids are small it's much better and safer to swim there (the beach at Nice is a bit of a steep incline into the sea once you get in). Get the train to San Remo (Also known as Sanremo) on the Italian Riviera - it's about 1 hour 40 mins away, changing at Ventimiglia. It's faded now but used to be one of the Riviera hotspots & has a pretty old town and palm fringed promenade. I don't like Monaco (very built up, rammed & full of tossers) but it's worth at least one short train ride!

To eat go to Chez Juliette and The Rotisserie (Boulangerie de Cathedral) near the cathedral and ice cream in the square
Take the white train that runs along the prom up the hill for some great views.
Buses are about 1.5 euros and this is any distance. Vence is great for quirky shops and art.
Just watch the hunks on the beach!

We went to Nice for Xmas market in 2015. Best place ever, they loved children. The beach is great. Going out for dinner is easy in the evenings.
Our hotel had s pool, so don't know if yours will?
We did the main park and castle.

Shopping was easy.

We went the right time as there were loads of things to do at the Xmas market.

Found everyone really friendly.

BikeRunSki · 05/07/2017 22:50

I second everything Jonesey said.

Go to Ventimilglia on a Friday when it's market day.

Penhacked · 05/07/2017 23:15

Third Ventimiglia

I've just seen there is a fireworks display in Cannes on july 13 which ds would like, does anyone know how much it would cost to get a taxi back about midnight from Cannes to Nice centre?

also has anyone any advice about the fireworks display on that day?

Don't get the train to Monaco, take a bus. When i was there last summer, it was the princely sum of 1 Euro each way, and takes the absolutely stunning coast road. Air conditioned too, so doesn't get too hot!!! You can find details here - the whole website is quite useful... www.bestofniceblog.com/transport-in-nice/buses-in-nice/bus-from-nice-to-monaco/
I've no affiliation!

ssd · 07/07/2017 18:23

Yy to Monaco. We spent a full day there, could have gone back for another one.

Took a train into Italy to a big flea market.

Walked round to the Old Town just past the prom, drank in the irish bar there.

Went to Cannes for the day.

Theres a waterpark but we didnt go.

Loved Nice.

nornironrock · 07/07/2017 18:29

It works for me... Just checked it again. Coudln't remember the name earlier so to find it, I just typed Bus from Nice to Monaco Nice Blog in google and looked at the list.... It's the top result.

Hope that helps!

ssd · 07/07/2017 18:30

ooh ssd - we're off to villefranche sur mer in August so I shall piggyback on your thread if you don't mind (dd14 and her friend so not too dissimilar to your holiday needs!) Hope you have a lovely time - I've just bought rough guide and lonely planet for the cote d'azur so if you don't have them but need me to look up any info just let me know!.

NapQueen · 07/07/2017 18:40

Sure, though it was a good few years ago! Went with a few friends for 10 nights. We rented an appartment. Ate in a few nice restaurants halfway down between the train station and the promenade.

Spent lots of time on the beach.

Theres a main shopping street with Zara etc on.

Cannes was odd as it didnt feel too glamorous I was expecting more if im honest.

Monaco was amazing. We trained in. Walked the length and breadth of it, really enjoyed going up to the aquarium on the top of the hill. Theres also a zoo. Lots of little cobbled streets. Outdoor escalators! The Macdonalds is like bottle green and cream ans posh. Theres a football atadium there too iirc.

Not too fussed on the Italian Market but would still recommend a trip to italy - just maybe not a market. Unless its your kind od thing.

ssd · 07/07/2017 18:57

no prob myrtle, though I dont know what to ask, haven't really got a clue what we're going to do! defo be visiting a few football stadiums though...

Monaco sounds lovely and we'll go to Italy, just to say we've been Grin, dont know about railing dh and ds through a flea market right enough, they wont even go through M&S here....
