Have a cocktail at Hotel Negresco. Have coq au vin at Chez Davia (very small family run restaurant).

Oh have a lovely time. I love Nice.

leccybill · 07/07/2017 19:04

Yes, Cannes is rather underwhelming in real life. It looks so glamorous at the film festival but on a day to day basis, it's a pretty normal town with lots of concrete and graffiti, and a beach you can't go on as the hotels own their own bits.

Whisky2014 · 07/07/2017 19:08

If you do go to ventimiglia and buy stuff at the market, say fake designer stuff...beware the police scour train stations and take goods away from you if they think it's fake.

St Paul de venue
Monaco..just cause
Antibes old town (also theme park and seaward style thing there)
Walker around nice and there is a bus ride which takes you up to come castle thing. But I recommend you walk it.

Whisky2014 · 07/07/2017 19:09

If you go to tilly go to dolceaqua

Whisky2014 · 07/07/2017 19:09

is dolceaqua accessible by train from Nice? is it better than sanremo for a day trip?

OP posts:
Whisky2014 · 08/07/2017 05:37

Doesn't look like they have a train station actually. We had a hire car.
Not been to sanremo but just Google and it looks lovely! I'm off to nice in a week so will maybe head there too!

GreenRut · 08/07/2017 06:00

We got a train to monte carlo and if I remember rightly, got off a stop early and Walked the coastal path into monte carlo itself. It was one of the best days out I've ever had!

SJane45S · 08/07/2017 08:14

We travelled from Nice to Sanremo and spent 3 nights there. As previous post, change at Ventimiglia - it's really simple! It used to be a stop off for the jet set on the Riviera - there's a casino & big old Russian church. It's got a feel of faded glamour - unlike Monaco it's not still visited by the super rich. The promenade is really pretty and you can hire bikes. The old town is pretty & you can walk up the steep medieval heart (La Pigna) through narrow alleyways to reach the church on top which has views across Sanremo. Well worth a day trip from Nice. There are nice beaches but like Nice they're stony. Only changed trains in Ventimiglia so can't compare it as a day trip to Sanremo!

we'll go to sanremo, is the station far from the actual town? I read it is, wonder if they do taxi's there, dont fancy the walk in the heat. Not sure what we'll do there...ds wants Italian pizza!

OP posts:
SJane45S · 08/07/2017 14:27

It's not that far out! We walked from our hotel on the other side of Sanremo to the train station on a v hot August day after my husband had damaged his knee! Lots of great little places to eat in the winding alleys and squares of the old town. Reasonably priced too. The only thing our then 6 year old would eat was pizza and we had no issue finding somewhere.

SJane45S · 08/07/2017 15:45

And ps - there's a taxi rank outside the station!

ssd · 08/07/2017 22:54

thanks!

is it ok to wander into the Hotel Negresco for a coffee or a soft drink? I'd love to see it but I dont really think ds or dh will fancy it, but I'll make them!

OP posts:
ssd · 09/07/2017 22:59

is vieille ville the old town bit?

OP posts:
leccybill · 10/07/2017 00:05

Not sure about the Negresco but yes vieille ville means Old Town.

Onynx · 10/07/2017 01:50

Vielle Ville is the old town- beautiful spot for a wander & some delicious ice cream & crepes😊 Ville Franche beach is nice & not stoney but small. Head down to Monaco & see the vintage car museum - that should keep the boys happy, I even enjoyed it! Lots of designer boutiques in Nice & Galleries Lafayette etc if you can escape for some retail therapy 😉

ssd · 10/07/2017 20:43

crepes YUM!!! Grin

If you want a cheap local food, look for the street stalls in the old town selling socca. It's a pancake made with chickpea flour.

One of my first holidays with DH involved a lot of socca and Rosé.

ssd · 11/07/2017 14:19

will do

OP posts:
Longdistance · 11/07/2017 15:01

Yy to socca. We got this and dd's liked it too. The old town is lovely, and some great back street restaurants/bars.

katonic · 11/07/2017 15:08

If your ds wants pizza there's an amazing pizza place called Les amarants (think that's the correct spelling!) which is near the marina in Nice, really popular so drop by and book a table if you don't want to queue. Would recommend their truffle pizza!
