leave children in car?

Stupid maybe, but I have been wondering about this recently - what do you do when you go and pay for the petrol you've just put in your car? Get your kids (in my case a 2 yr old toddler and a 2 month old baby) out and take them in with you, or leave them in the car? The first seems a lot of hassle but the latter doesn't feel very safe...

Having just joined a carclub (highly recommended, BTW!!) I am suddenly faced with this.. (normally using public transport I've just never thought about it..).

aloha, that's terrible. But agree with MoS, what DO you all do re supermarket trolley? I hope you're not the people who leave them standing around in the car park as that really makes me

In a petrol station - no, I leave her in car and run and pay keeping an eye on the locked car at all times but that's the only place I'd do it.

Supermarket

When she was a baby I used to take her with me, put her in the seat and then put the coin in. ON the way abck, I'd unload the shopping, take the trolley back and then get baby out and go abck to the car with her.

Now she walks next to me while I do this.

Would not leave her alone outside a shop as I live in London (albeit a quiet area).

Always leave her in the locked car when I have to fill up with her. (can't believe someone said 'what if you're hld up in the shop because of a robbery, I'd rather dd was locked in the car than involved in a robbery in a petrol station!!). I usually go in the middle of the day, when there's loads of people around and always lock the car. I don't think thieves go around strealing cars in broad daylight under cctv when they are locked in full view of several other people! Or do they? Honestly its far more dangerous to drive anywhere than leave a child locked in the car for a couple of minutes!!!!

pay and display, I unload buggy and dd, lock the car, pay my ticket, go back to the car, put ticket in and lock again with dd always with me.

Most supermarkets requiring a coin for trolleys, usually ahve trolleys close to the Mother&baby areas, so you don't need to go all the way to where all the trolleys are. At least our local Asda and Tesco do.

It gets tricky when there's more than one though webmum!
I leave them in the car when:
-I go to fetch the supermarket trolley (but usually don't go shopping with them)
-I go and pay for petrol
-I go into the newsagent to get a paper
Actually I think with a baby and a toddler it woudl be pretty difficult to get them in and out and pay for anything while still holding on to ds1....
Personally I think its a very very small risk to take. Certainly smaller than crossing the road!

Of course Elliot,

my second is still very easily portable (23wks pregnant!!) so I did not think about that, but most supermarkets have trolleys with double seats don't they?

Of course if you've got 3 then it gets more diffcult...

I have left mine in the car for a few seconds while returning a trolley if it was raining though. I certainly wasn't criticising, I was just offering advice!

I also leave dd in the car if I suddenly remember I've forgotten something and she's already strapped in...I run in the house (leave door open) and don't even lock the car, because I'm usually in a great rush!!

(that makes me a bad mum I suppose )

Wasn't taking it as criticism webmum (didn't mean to sound defensive). Its not getting them into the trolley that's difficult, its the hassle of lugging the car seat plus holding on to toddler. I used to do what you do when there was just ds1, but with two I've got much more lazy about it (and have less time to worry about highwaymen holding up the petrol station etc!)
