Where to eat in Richmond London with 5yr old and 2yr old ?

Hello London Dwellers.
We are visiting your quaint little village next week during our half term. Thinking of visiting Kew Gardens, The Butterfly House and Natural History Museum(over 3 days). But where to eat in the evening apart form Pizza hut(yuk)? Ds is 2 and can be "challenging" when we are out in restaurants. Is there a family type place that serves nice food in the Richmond area. Any ideas gratefully received.

How was gournet burger with the kids I loved it prekids but it never looked very child firendly in teh evenings - do they have a childs menu?

CountessDracula · 15/02/2007 12:19

Second all of the suggestions made - dd LOVES gourmet burger!

There is a Pizza Express too (opposite the little cinema)

Whatever you do avoid the cafe in Dickens and Jones it is VILE

suejonez · 15/02/2007 12:20

It used to be quite good CD many years ago obviously gone downhill since then

lemonaid · 15/02/2007 12:22

sue - yes, they have child's menu (the Putney one does, anyway) but TBH with a LO the age of yours or mine it's easier to just share what you're having (the portions are huge anyway). I tend to order a couple of extra fillings in my burger then give half the bun and a selection of other bits to DS, who can also pick at any side dishes. He does love the milkshakes, though (although I suspect the official MN position on milkshakes is disapproving...).

decafskinnylatte · 15/02/2007 12:23

GBK does junior burgers (chicken or beef) & you can add whatever you like. I always go for the 5-7 slot when doing dinner out w/ kids; there tend to be so many others, the misbehaviour of mine doesn't show up so much.

Know what you mean about D&J, CD - every time I've been (& can count on less than 1 hand - it is vile), I've lowered the average age to about 85.

lemonaid · 15/02/2007 12:26

I forget, do we say LO on here or is that the American boards?

Make that "with a DC the age of yours or mine"...

2nervesleft · 15/02/2007 12:27

Wow you lot are spoilt for choice! I would never eat in if I lived in London. Thanks for all your help and suggestions. I'm really looking forward to the trip now.

Don't miss the Badger Sett in Kew gardens! The restaurant in the centre of the park is nice - none of it especially cheap, but the cafe by the play area can become horrendously overcroweded. It is a good play area, though.
Look out for a Wagamama - noodle bars, and pretty child-friendly.

2nervesleft · 15/02/2007 12:32

LO or DC works for me.

There are so many of you in the area visiting the same resturants, do you look for clues about people around you when you are out to see if they are MN'ers or do you mutter "is that you UCM" to look for a reaction? I will be next week!

Maybe you all know each other already?

whenever FIL comes to visit (several times a year!) his fave fave place for a cuppa is the D &J cafe.
euurgh

There is a nice pub in Fulwell which is only a short bus ride from Richmond, it's called The Old Goat, it is very child friendly and the food is great. The bus stops just outside.

Paddlechick666 · 15/02/2007 14:12

lol 2nerves, we all know each other! we have a very active West London MumsNet Posse.

is it your HT next week? tell us what day you're at Kew and maybe you'll meet some of us too! Thursday's no good, we're all off to Bocketts Farm for the day.

can't really add any eating suggestions to those already made I'm afraid.....

btw, the cafes at Kew are seriously expensive. i'd suggest packing a picnic if the weather's up to it........

ps: I went out with a boy from Neath a few years back when I lived in Bristol.

2nervesleft · 15/02/2007 14:16

Thinking of going to Kew on Wednesday.

Paddlechick666 · 15/02/2007 14:19

I might well be there Wednesday too. Got plans Monday, Tuesday and Thursday so far so something closer to home on Weds would be good.

my dd is 15 months and loves Climbers & Creepers - it exhausts her so I love it too!

ps: the Badger set is great as has already been mentioned

2nervesleft · 15/02/2007 14:27

Oh it would be great to meet up with someone even if just for a coffee. Dh will be working all day so its just me and the kids. ds 2 and dd5. They will love the Climbers and Creepers. DD is looking forward to it cos she watches Gardeners World with her GP's on Friday nights when she sleeps over! Shes like a little OAP lol. Will be looking for the Badgers Sett as DD will love as well, though we do see badgers around here a fair bit.

Have never found anyone else to admit to coming from Neath on here, but its not something you would boast about. If you are in kew let me know and I can mutter to women with 15 month old dds is that you Paddlechick???
See if I can find you before they chuck me out.

OP posts:
Paddlechick666 · 15/02/2007 14:34

lol @ the Neath comment. I'm actually from North Welsh stock myself, t'was only the boyf who was a Neath boy but I have been there heaps!

CAT me, we can swap numbers and try to co-ordinate meeting up.

I live 10 mins from Syon but have never been but keep meaning to take dd to butterfly house.

mind you, CM is taking her to the Aquatic place there the following week.

i randomly mutter to all sorts at C&C and haven't been chucked out yet - mind you DD has a very familiar relationship with the staff there. she and the "sand" sweeper guy just grin at each other a lot!

suejonez · 15/02/2007 16:07

I admit to coming from Llanelli - can't be worse to come from Neath surely?

I can't make Wednesday as DS is at a familiarisation with childminder day until mid afternoon. But could possibly meet up for coffee another day in the area.

Paddle - aren;t you supposed to be working...

Lemon - LO is perfectly acceptable at least to me but of course I frown on milkshakes (for children) unless tested first by mummy.

Paddlechick666 · 15/02/2007 16:15

sj, thanks for saving me - thought i'd killed all the threads this arvo!

i had 5 days A/L to take so took them over half term thinking would be a favour to CM and that would save myself fees for the week.

only apparently this is one of the holiday weeks i pay for! so now of course think i should've taken a week off where T would attend CM if I was paying for it anyway but hey-ho it all comes out in the wash.

i get so confused by it all.

i am but a mummy of little brain.....

2nervesleft · 15/02/2007 16:18

I'm not sure I know what CAT is but anyone who wants to meet up for a coffee or to show me the delights of your area would be very welcome to email me on [email protected].

BTW Suejonez was a bit distracted earlier but I do indeed know the Stradey Park Hotel, I have had my work xmas party there for the past 4 years. We always have a great time. Big rugby hotel isn't it? I expect some of the legends stayed there when your family had it?

No rugby legends when they were there as they ran it as a banqueting hall and pub/club rather than a hotel though their claim to fame is thet they did Phil Bennets wedding.

My grandma still lives in one of the old coach houses at the bottom of the steps by the entrance they kept the coach house and converted it into a house when they sold.
