have you got a memory foam mattress?

we are thinking about buying one online, 5 yr guarantee, you can return it if you don't like it, £310 for 7cm, I have read about them on wikipedia, but would like to hear other peoples thoughts, not sure whether we should get a mattress topper or proper mattress , so any advice comments,

we've heard they smell, initially, are worried that because they are synthetic and so dense that we might get a bit too hot?

but anyhthing is going to be better than what we have at the moment

Yes - but as it was only delivered today I cam't really give you an opinion on it yet. The one thing I can tell you at this stage is that, while there is a faint smell, it isn't at all overpowering. As dh and I both suffer from bad backs we are hoping for great things...I'll keep you posted.

MrsSpoon · 05/01/2007 19:23

We have a Tempur and it is absolutely fantastic, the best thing we ever bought. It did smell initially but it wasn't overpowering and the smell was soon gone. It can get a bit warm but I don't find it unbearabe, even in the summer (although we are in Scotland and do have an old draughty house), we just adjust the bedding to suit.

flutterbee · 05/01/2007 19:26

Yuck yuck yuck yuck yuck.

My brother described sleeping on one as "like sleeping on a huge sweaty sponge"

This thing moulds to your body when you have warmed the material up and that's fine, but when you become horribly hot during the night (think summer) and need to roll over you move suddenly on to this rock hard, freezing cold flat surface.

Don't do it get a big lovely heavy sprung mattress with a pillow topper and you will be in heaven I promise.

Whizzz · 05/01/2007 19:30

we have a memory foam mattress topper - its lovely & not sweaty !

themoon66 · 05/01/2007 19:31

The thing I don't understand is, how can they mould to your shape, given that the average person moves around 100s of times a night... which shape does the mattress pick?

singsalot · 05/01/2007 19:33

we are in Scotland, but I am quite sensitive to synthetic heat, still they sound sooooo comfy, people who have them seem totally persauded,

though any other dissenters like flutterbee I would like to hear that side too!

though we could lighten up the bedding the thought of freezing, nocturnal waking, is not very appealing, though it wouldn't be much different from our, sprung mattress with mattress topper that we have at the moment, which keeps me awake, and also when I do sleep I wake with a sore back...... I know it is too hard, so we are looking for the alternatives

It moulds to your shape where you are at the time, moon - when you move it moulds to your new shape. The 'memory' refers to it finding its original (ie., mattress shape) not like a you-shaped permanent depression in it

Ours has a removable, washable cover which is made of some space-agey, non static super-breathable fabric.

marthamoo · 05/01/2007 19:38

This is the one we've bought - it scored higher than Tempur in Which? tests and was about a third of the price.

marthamoo · 05/01/2007 19:41

Half the price, anyway

singsalot · 05/01/2007 19:51

Marthamoo - it sounds good, but it is a fair bit dearer than the one we are thinking of buying, I know these things can be varying quality, are you having an early night?

maybe I should've put this in the products section, just saw general advice/tips and went for that, oh well at least I got some quick replies,

I have a memory foam mattress in the spare bedroom (It used to be mine before moving to a kingsize bed).

Every time someone stays over they ask where they can get one, and MIL always says it's the best part of her stay

marthamoo · 05/01/2007 20:05

I always mean to have an early night...

singersgirl · 05/01/2007 20:30

We have one (Tempur) and it is great. The first few nights I slept really badly, as it seems to be a real effort to turn over as you just sink, but after that I got used to it and sleep really well. It is much better for my back. If you read all the bumph you apparently change position much less often than with a normal mattress. Have never noticed the coldness, but DH gets a bit sweaty - I'm always cold so it doesn't bother me.

tassis · 05/01/2007 20:34

my lovely brother and SIL have recently got one and they go about how wonderful it is a lot

themoon66 · 05/01/2007 21:25

Am fancying one a bit now, after reading this thread. Can you hoover them, like a normal mattress?

UCM · 05/01/2007 21:28

Do you hoover your mattress, Moon? God I must be v.v.lazy then

dyzzidi · 05/01/2007 21:38

We have just bought one (delivered next week) we were satying with friends and they made us sleep in there bed to show us how comfy it was. Well they hooked us. We have bought a pocketsprung one with 2 inches of tempur type stuff on top. My Dh has said that it was the best nights sleep he had in years.

winestein · 05/01/2007 21:38

uhmmm, glad you said that first UCM

marthamoo · 05/01/2007 22:51

You hoover your mattress?

CanSleepWellSometimes · 05/01/2007 22:57

We have tempur mattresses. The 15cm one on our bed (firm) and in the 2nd spare room, and the 20cm one (medium) in the main spare room. As you might gather, we love them .

7cm sounds very thin though - is that just a topper?

singsalot · 05/01/2007 23:38

the memory bit is 7 cm for the medium, think 10cm for the firm, mattress is 20 cm deep, of the only place we have really looked at so far, apart from john lewis, too dear and local shop, looked cheap and nasty

www.memory-mattress.co.uk/memory_mattress_online_shop.html

is where we are thinking of buying from, if anyone can tell me the difference between all the different types in very simple terms!

I have a cumfilux mttress that i found in my local second had furniture project. It ws bNWT and in original packging, but smelled of smoke - not cigarette smoke, fire smoke.

I think it must have been fire damaged stock, but anyway, it is over a foot deep, memory foam topped (at least 3 inches from what I can tell)

and it ws £15, delived.

I have a thread somewhere, gloating about it.

It is a beautiful mattress, i wouldn't swp it. Amazingly soft, but the only bad thing is, if you are roisted out of bed by a baby at 6am in January, then 10 minutes later you make your bed IT'S STILL WARM! How cruel is that!
