have you got a memory foam mattress?

we are thinking about buying one online, 5 yr guarantee, you can return it if you don't like it, £310 for 7cm, I have read about them on wikipedia, but would like to hear other peoples thoughts, not sure whether we should get a mattress topper or proper mattress , so any advice comments,

we've heard they smell, initially, are worried that because they are synthetic and so dense that we might get a bit too hot?

but anyhthing is going to be better than what we have at the moment

singsalot - can't find the page you have tried to link to, but normally the thicker it is the softer it is, so are you sure you have your firm/soft the right way round?

singsalot · 06/01/2007 13:24

csws -

this is what it says on the site :
we are light to medium build, but it sounds a bit stingy

We offer 3 thicknesses of memory foam: 5 cm, 7cm and 10cm. All mattresses are 20 cm thick, Made with British Vita foam.

If you are a light to medium build (upto 13 stones ) go for the memory mattress with 5cm of memory foam. (soft feel)
If you are a medium to heavy build (upto 15 stones) go for the memory mattress with 7cm of memory foam. (medium feel)
If you prefer a slightly firmer feel to the mattress go for the mattress with 10cm of memory foam. (medium to firm feel)

Hmm, then I think I'd ideally want to try it out before I bought, as that is the opposite to tempur (see here for explanation of how the thickness is built up with tempur), and the medium one has a very different feel to the firm one to lay on (it's quite hard to move yourself initially on the medium one, but comparatively easy on the firm). Is there a showroom you can go to to try them? Or do they offer a trial period so that if you buy one and don't like it you can return it (60 days with Tempur)?

Sorry - I forgot I was supposed to come back with a verdict. It's...a resounding success! I was prepared to take some time to get used to the new feel of the mattress but I slept fine - and I was astonished to wake up this morning without a single twinge of backache (I usually wake up with my back griping at me - and it eases when I've been up for a while; I knew it was the bed). And dh said he had the best night's sleep he's had for years - he really suffers with pains in his legs and feet plus a bad back and he said it felt much easier this morning. He was positively chirpy this moring

We've just knackered our backs again getting the old mattress down two flights of stairs and into the car to take it to the tip but...singsalot, yep, worth every penny.

Have a look at this on the site where we got ours - quite useful

Yes I hoover the mattress with the nozzle attachment thingie. My mum always did, so I suppose I just carried on when I got my own place. Think of all the dead skin cells and yuek.

themoon66 · 06/01/2007 14:45

Oh.. and don't go thinking I'm some sort of domestic godess.. am extremely slatternly in other areas, I mean, you should see me stained sink

singsalot · 06/01/2007 15:08

csws - thank you! ouch £1,199 for a mattress
it is a way out of our league, and oh all the different technical info, does it have to be so complicated, you are right we need to at least try before we buy, the site we've looked at offers a 14day return, money back guarantee, plus 5 yr warranty, for a mattress that is about a third of the price,

mathamoo's is more "affordable" but still nearly twice as dear as the one we are thinking of buying

I feel less informed and just slightly bamboozled buy it all

martham - it is great you have got used to it so quickly, you make it sound fab

themoon saw this and thought of you! " No more dust mites
Most beds and mattresses are great environments for dust mites. Memory foam is naturally resistant to dust mites and is naturally anti microbial."

I felt very confused by it all as well (I posted on here ages ago - I'll try and find the thread) - Tempur was out of our price range too, but it was the Which? Best Buy thing that really swung us. We did go and lie on some in MFI and that helped us decide we wanted a totally memory foam mattress rather than a sprung mattress with a top layer of memory foam. It is a bit of a gamble though - even lying on them in shops doesn't really help you decide - you only know when you sleep on it. So one with a home trial is a good idea.

Here you go, my old thread - some useful links on it from hub2dee

singsalot · 06/01/2007 15:25

cheers marthamoo, that was helpful, IKWYM about it not being the most stimulating discussion topic, maybe I will get better at posting interesting threads when I have been on here a while!?

Sometimes you need to know about boring stuff

singsalot · 06/01/2007 20:13

Less talk, more action, we ordered one tonight, should get it Tuesday, we went for the cheaper one, scored 73% on which, compared to 83% for the one you got marthamoo, I think?

anyway, hopefully it will do the trick as sleep has been elusive this week
