Sheffield park in Sussex - beautiful gardens and then opposite the car park take a walk accross the field to the (well so posted) adventure woodland for the kids to swing on rope swings, climb things and build dens.

SnuffleGruntSnorter · 28/01/2016 19:45

Well signposted

The Treasurer's House behind York Minster is NT, and is lovely.

Muskateersmummy · 04/02/2016 09:04

Second vote for attingham. The house is lovely, but the walks are amazing. We go there regularly.

Jenijena · 04/02/2016 09:06

Definitely Cragside. Don't miss the playground half way round the drive. Particularly good on a damp weekday in February when you're the only visitors...

Yes to Wimpole and Fountains, (Fountains abbey also had the loveliest changing/baby room). Corfe castle is what a proper sandcastle looks like, in my imagination, and can be tied in very easily with a trip on the Swanage Railway (not NT). And if you're on holiday in that area, you can take advantage of free parking on the beaches. Mottisfont is my local one, and always has fun things to do, woodland climbing area (bring wellies), water play area etc.

DidgeDoolittle · 04/02/2016 09:13

Calke Abbey in Derbyshire is fantastic. Big gardens and a very interesting house, even for kids. It was lived in by the Harper Crewe family who were all eccentric collectors and travellers. The house is full of stuff that they just left in boxes. When they died the NT found all this amazing stuff in mint condition.

pussinwellyboots · 05/02/2016 05:32

We love Arlington Court in Devon in particular the woodland play area with stream to dam, pizza oven and mud slides!

In Cumbria we often head to Acorn Bank to see the water mill, play in the woods and wander in the house and we also love Allanbank, Grasmere particularly the relaxed nature of the house and that we can take the dog in and make our own cups of tea. Wray Castle is another favourite.

ArkATerre · 05/02/2016 06:04

Sizergh Castle is great, lovely gardens, plenty of space for DC to explore.

TeamEponine · 05/02/2016 06:07

Scotney is the most beautiful NT I've been too.

screamingeels · 05/02/2016 06:19

Two in Sussex:
Nymans is our favourite they have great kids trails all the time and its a lovely walk round the gardens. You can do the woods if being intrepid.
Sheffield Park Gardens is good too and has great natural playground in wood.

I was mildly disappointed with a Tatton though big playground.

Have also enjoyed: Bidulph grange; Bodiam Castle and Monnti- something just west of new forest.

Two completly different in the Lakes. Fell foot which is all outdoor fun (bring a kite) and Wray Castle which is just really a giant dressing up box/playroom/playground.

BikeRunSki · 05/02/2016 06:20

Wray Castle and Sizergh Castle in Cumbria have been big hits with my DC. The nature trail at Wray is responsible for me now knowing the location of every monkey puzzle tree within 10 miles of home!
We take bikes to Clumber Park, Notts, often. Lovely day out in Summer.
Cotehele House and Cotehele Mill, Saltash, Cornwall were very interesting, much enjoyed by the DC (nearly 5 and nearly 2 at the time). Big gardens, trail, mill!!

annandale · 05/02/2016 06:25

Waddesdon in Oxfordshire. Though I find the house a little claustrophobic - it's a great tour but I suddenly saw that the 'country house life' was a kind of performance, or at least at Waddesdon it was.

Fell Foot in the Lakes. You can freeze your nads off swim in Windermere there.

Cliveden in Bucks for the woods and maze. But OMG it's busy when it's busy.

screamingeels · 05/02/2016 06:26

Ooh and Wakehurst - its massive. Loads to explore lots of kids activities.

(Great thread - and I'm very jealous of all those near Cragside. I must convince DH we need a holiday to Norhumberland)

1234Littleham · 05/02/2016 09:26

Tyntesfield is amazing (near Bristol).

One of the National Trusts latest purchases. The family had left it intact in a sort of Gothic Victorian time warp crammed with stuff that they hadn't thrown away.

Our only local-ish property is Nostell Priory near Wakefield (it's a handy stop off the A1 too is you are driving north beyond Sheffield). Good grounds, exellent adventure playground. My DC love the doll's house of the house inside.

NavyAndWhiteStripes · 05/02/2016 10:35

My favourites are Wallington in Northumberland, Brimham Rocks in N Yorks (amazing rock formations) and Blickling in Norfolk.

BaronessEllaSaturday · 05/02/2016 10:42

Hardcastle crags near Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. I also love going to Brinham rocks and Fountains abbey.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/02/2016 10:46

Nunnington near York is small but lovely. Mud pie kitchen and a collection of miniature shops. Kids most fascinated by the tigerskin rugs in the hall.

Frith2013 · 17/02/2016 14:34

We love Croome in Worcestershire! Stately home but with huge grounds (lakes, bridges, grotto and church). They're making more of the old RAF base from ww2 so the canteen is in the former hospital and there's a small museum about that.

Also like Kinver rock houses and Hanbury Hall plus Croft Castle.

StealthPolarBear · 17/02/2016 14:35

Clumber park

StealthPolarBear · 17/02/2016 14:37

Oh yes and fountains abbey

Catzpyjamas · 17/02/2016 14:39

Anything they have in the Lake District, especially Fell Foot Park, Sizergh Castle and Hill Top (Beatrix Potter's house).

StepAwayFromTheThesaurus · 17/02/2016 14:42

Cragside is great.

Also in the north east, Gibside and Wallington are great. They both have multiple play areas as well as walks etc.

StepAwayFromTheThesaurus · 17/02/2016 14:43

If you want a Scottish recommendation, Culzean castle is great for kids. I think you can get in with English NT membership through some reciprocal scheme.
