Can't help as I haven't been but for you, hope you have a lovely time!

maggiesmama · 31/10/2006 20:16

there is a great market. cant remeber where exaclty - its the only on on every day. brilliant. got gorgeous linen really really cheap. there is a great flea arket just on sundays too. colleseum at sundown is stunning. had amazing pizza near by. just divine. will look up adresses. sprry os vague. but its just sucha wonderul place

DumbledoresGirl · 31/10/2006 20:19

I have been and am also of you!

Dh and I steered clear of the arty stuff as we just couldn't fit everything into the 2 days we were there. I would advise you limit yourself in some way. We like the history side of things and have catholic backgrounds so we did all the ancient monuments (well, not all, but some!) and St Peters.

Eating is easy - everywhere are fantastic places. But beware of prices in the popular areas.

We didn't do any shopping.

So of you. It is the most fantastic city in the whole world.

Keats house, bottom of Spanish steps. Fab.

niceglasses · 31/10/2006 20:20

Or is it the top of the steps?? Sorry too many Halloween punches.

DelGhoul · 31/10/2006 20:21

bottom on the right looking up

DelGhoul · 31/10/2006 20:26

I assume you know the main ones? Everywhere is easy walking distance from the centre tbh. Depending on where you're staying you might want to get the underground to the Vatican but that's still not far to walk. Pantheon a must, Trevi fountain, Spanish steps - all the designer shops are in the road opposite. Piazza Nirvona {sp] is lovely. Very but will be there for Christmas so I don't feel too bad Have fun. tbh, I don't think any of the restaurants are that pricey. Not that i've been to them all but the ones near the Forum/Colloseum I thought were quite reasonable for where they were.

sugarfree · 31/10/2006 20:34

We were there over the Summer and absolutely loved every single minute of it,it's just totally amazing.
Just soak up the atmosphere and don't forget to take some time just drinking coffee and watching Rome go by.
Piazza Navonna and Bernini's fountain is one of my must sees, but just wandering is cool too.
Enjoy and make sure you report back here when you get back.

ItalianJob · 31/10/2006 20:38

if you are veggie, like veggie food, there is a fab restaurant called Marguttas just round the corner from the Piazza Navona. St. Peters is well worth seeing, and the basilica itself is free, it's just the museums you pay for.

Marina · 31/10/2006 20:40

Dh says the Baths of Caracalla are worth the detour if you want something a bit off the beaten track. But that was 20 years ago...Have a wonderful time Mirage

ItalianJob · 31/10/2006 20:41

The Forum is worth a quick toddle round, is pretty central IIRC. Rome is an amazingly nice city just to walk around.

DelGhoul · 31/10/2006 20:41

yes but only contemplate going to the top of St Peters if you are very fit and very small Nearly dropped off my perch when I got to the top lol.

Aitchisforhalloween · 31/10/2006 20:50

under no circumstances go to the very top of st peter's, it's the seventh circle of hell up there.
and there are a couple of fabulous (and very reasonably priced) restaurants behind the colosseum. real romans live there, iykwim, so they don't charge tourist prices. i can't remember the names but they are one street down from the via capo d'africa.
fausto santini on the via frattini makes the best ever shoes and bags i think, but there is a factory shop on the via santa maria maggiore where you get last season's stuff cheaper.

francophilly · 31/10/2006 20:55

I got married in Rome in 2003 and had a fantastic week there. Would recommend the Trastavere area (not sure of spelling). Tried many times but could not find a bad tiramisu.

Also taxis are hard to find first thing in the morning. We nearly missed our audience with the Pope!

VoluptuaGoodshag · 31/10/2006 20:55

Oh you lucky thing.

Spanish Steps and all the shops in the surrounding area. Restaurant nearby (La Rampa I believe) is very nice but didn't accept credit cards back in 2000, they may do now
The wee lanes off the Piazza Navona - lit up with lights and candles at night (can't remember their name)
the Pantheon
The pinkie coloured museum at the top of the forum

Ooooh everything - love it

NAB3 · 31/10/2006 21:08

We went to Rome for our honeymoon and had a fab time. Our best day out was to the zoo.

The Coloseum was good too.

supertrouper · 31/10/2006 21:14

Trastevere is a great area for eating out. Really good value and the food is to die for!

lapsedrunner · 01/11/2006 08:58

The Forum is amazing

NAB3 · 01/11/2006 10:13

I can't remember the name but there is a Church where lots of tourists go to look around. Make sure you don't sit down on the floor. I did and got told off!!

DelGirl · 01/11/2006 10:34

Do you mean the pantheon Nabs? The dome? Or St Peters? I wouldn't want to sit on the floor at this time of year it would be far too chilly

AitchTwoOh · 01/11/2006 12:08

well they are places of Catholic worship... i'd have thought sitting on the floor in the manner of an exhausted backpacker would be pretty disrespectful, tbh. If you travel to Assisi and places like that they won't let men in wearing sorts above the knee and women must wear skirts. they have nuns guarding the door, gggrrrrrrrrr.

DumbledoresGirl · 01/11/2006 12:24

Same clothing restrictions apply to St Peters. I went with a wrap handy as I had bare shoulders (not allowed) but then that was in July - not sure how warm it is there now?

AitchTwoOh · 01/11/2006 12:27

yeah, i used to travel everywhere with a sarong in my younger days, so that i could pretend it was a skirt.
didn't notice st peter's when i was there last, but i probably was wearing a skirt and shirt anyway so it wouldn't have come up.
you've got to go to the pantheon, byt the way, i think it's my absolute favourite place in rome. well, that and the curch DH and i got married in but i am obliged to say that.

DelGirl · 01/11/2006 12:33

The Pantheon is my fave place too, it's so amzing. Though the atmosphere in the Colosseum is hard to beat, you can almost touch that!

NAB3 · 01/11/2006 14:18

It could have been the Pantheon.

I certainly wasn't meaning to be disrespectful when I sat on the floor. I wasn't feeling well and wanted to avoid fainting.
