Nope paid a tiny bit over £1000 for a party of 3 to have a week abroad last year. Saved all year for me and DD and then my Mum asked to tag along an paid the extra for herself.

Heels99 · 31/03/2015 17:25

Yes of course. People pay a lot more than £3k but also a lot less! Prices vary depending on what time of year you go, board basis, standard of accommodation etc

Why haven't you ever been abroad?

FlappertyFlippers · 31/03/2015 17:26

Shock at the cost of a weeks stay in centre parks in August. That can be over 3k for a cabin.

Hulababy · 31/03/2015 17:29

People can pay that for a week in the UK, let alone a week abroad.

And if you go further afield it can be an awful lot more.

Then add in the extra cost due to it being school holidays.

It is very easily done, that and a lot more.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 31/03/2015 17:30

Some people probably do, yes. People have different priorities. Some people will save hard for that holiday because that's what they enjoy and what is important to them. Each to their own. We don't spend a lot of money on 'holidays' per se, we're lucky that DH's parents live in a lovely house in Spain near a beach so can go for the price of flights. However in the past we've spent quite a lot on travel. DH is a big rugby fan so we've followed the 6 nations around Europe, had lots of city breaks etc.

Hulababy · 31/03/2015 17:31

A 4 bed games lodge at Centre Parcs in August is currently £5498!
Its well over £1500 even for a reasonably basic 2 bed.

Hulababy · 31/03/2015 17:32

We spend a lot on holidays over the year as it is quite important to us. We probably spend less on some things that other people find are important to them.

AnyFucker · 31/03/2015 17:33

yup

dementedpixie · 31/03/2015 17:34

We're paying just under £5K for 2 weeks all inclusive in the Dominican Republic. I wouldn't pay £3K for 1 week

ThreeMoreDaysTillFriday · 31/03/2015 17:35

Sorry my no was just me personally. Obviously others do. Those who have that kind of cash to spare and don't mind spending it

MrsTerryPratchett · 31/03/2015 17:35

People do but you don't have to. Get on a coach to France, camp or stay in a little, local place. Eat 'jambon et fromage' from local shops. Dirt cheap.

DontDrinkandFacebook · 31/03/2015 17:35

Yes. Easily. If you are a family of four or more and you like nice quality accommodation then that's what it costs. You can get it much cheaper of course, but like everything, you get what you pay for.

trixymalixy · 31/03/2015 17:36

I pay over £3k for a skiing holiday and paid that for 6 of us to go to the canaries for 2 weeks in a private villa with a pool. For a week in Spain for a family of four, no.

SwingingBalls · 31/03/2015 17:36

Yes. 11 nights in Greece, 2 adults, 2 teenagers, all inclusive £3500.

thenextday · 31/03/2015 17:38

About £5k for a week in the Algarve at luxury villa..2 adults, 2 teens.

Ihavenobrain · 31/03/2015 17:41

I just haven't ever been able to save for a holiday. Rubbish with money. We go camping or in a cheap cottage in Norfolk but really would like to go to the sun!
I'm determined to do it this year tho!
I have to for my kids.
Dh is rubbish too but then he's seen the world with mummy and daddy!Shock

Well - it doesn't HAVE to cost £3k -but if you are tied to school hols, and want to go to a specific place then it can quite easily.

Different families have differing budgets. We tend to have our main holiday in the summer in France - renting a house/cottage. I book everything separately and am often surprised when I add it all up - it does come in between £2K -£4K for our family. That's including fuel, tolls, insurances, food etc.

If money is tighter for you how about camping abroad? Then you get the sun, but save on accommodation/flights. Drive down to the Vendee/Southern Brittany.

I think holidays and trips in general are important- it's good to get away and relax. Our mini breaks add up to a fair bit, but are worth the break in routine.

Ihavenobrain · 31/03/2015 21:16

I'm too nervous to drive abroad and dh won't or that would be great.
I'm not fussy. Just needs to be clean.
Thanks Grin

We have camped and done budget holidays in cheap nasty hotels, and can now afford to pay a bit more for something nicer. If I can't be as comfortable as I am at home then I would rather stay at home.

We paid nearly £3k for an amazing trip to Northern Finland at half term. The price included everything except for drinks from the bar - flights, transfers, meals, snowy activities. We even got to see the northern lights. It was worth every (expensive) penny.

sansou · 01/04/2015 00:40

We're off to Andulasia on Friday for the week. Flights x 4, car hire & 2 bed family suite on a HB basis comes to £1.7k. The same holiday for a week in August would cost £3k+ which is the reason why we holiday at Easter and the half terms rather than August!

Ihavenobrain · 01/04/2015 10:39

Would October be cheaper and where would be hot?

OP posts:
SpecificOcean · 01/04/2015 10:46

No we pay around £2000 for 2 adults 2 teens.
We book flights from local airport as soon as they come out.
Then two 4* half board hotel rooms next door to each other.
That usually comes to about £1200-£1500 so just add spends- £600 ish.
We often go in August.
Of course we could pay more or less than that, but that suits us.

Wadingthroughsoup · 01/04/2015 10:50

October cheaper than summer holidays in most places, yes.

The Canaries are pretty warm at that time of year, I believe, though I've never been.

Cyprus is beautiful and would be very warm in October.

Ihavenobrain · 01/04/2015 11:18

Right ok might be more achievable then. Grin

It's easier to get deals if you can be slightly flexible. If annual leave allows, going tuesday - tuesday is usually cheaper than Friday-friday. Also check other nearby airports - I once got an awesome deal going from Leeds-Bradford rather than manchester and parked the car there for a week and still save shedloads.

Also, be open to what hotels to consider. My outlaws used to choose their hotel as a definite location and then wonder why their holidays cost so much more than ours - because we chose an area, looked at 5 or 6 or more hotels, and booked on the best deal.
