We're taking Granny and ds next weekend.

I'd like to find a nice restaurant where ds will be welcome (well mannered 7 y.o.), and that serves proper food, or even just really good fish and chips.

And any recommendations for Sunday lunch would be welcome too.

TIA

There is a fantastic Ghurka restaurant on Waterloo Road - they do an eat as much as you can menu that has Ghurka, Indian and Chinese cuisine alongside chicken nuggets and chips. I took dd there aged about 20 months and they were brilliant. It wasn't very expensive either.

Oh Cheesy that sounds interesting. Can't see Granny going for Ghurka food tho, She's at the "getting elderly, likes things fairly plain" stage.

Any more suggestions please?

hehe - we are gonig at teh weekend too! To do naffola activities and see the illuminations!

Any tips on seeing lights anyone?!

CheesyFeet · 25/09/2006 14:29

Whereabouts are you staying? There are a few chain type pubs that are fairly safe.

Gobbledigook - are you staying over (ie will you have to take your car through the lights or can you leave it at a hotel)?

CheesyFeet · 25/09/2006 14:29

Is Italian food out of the question clumsymum?

clumsymum · 25/09/2006 16:56

Italians good, she does most european, but her dodgy tummy doesn't do curry (strange, cos it handles Gin O.K. ).

We're staying at the Savoy, on the Prom, but won't walk very far, so car journeys arent a problem for food

If you're looking for fish and chips you could go to Harry Ramsden's by the Tower (if you're happy to take out a second mortgage!). Lovely food but a bit pricey. Taken my Nan there and she loves it because all the waitresses look smart and the loos are nice and clean!

clumsymum · 25/09/2006 19:05

Went there about 6 years ago HC, and the food was utter Kak [vomit emoticon]

I was actually looking for something smaller and independant, but thanks for the suggestion.

Gobbledigook · 25/09/2006 20:09

No, not staying over as we are not that far away. Was thinking of driving through the lights but is walking better? Mind you, is it then a real trek to get back to the car again?!

CountessDracula · 25/09/2006 20:13

dh was there recently for work and said that he and his collegue spent hours trying to find somewhere decent to eat with no joy

Maybe it just doesnt exist
he ended up having egg & chips in a vile greasy spoon

clumsymum · 25/09/2006 20:40

oh CD I was afraid of that.

Surely people who live in Blackpool go out to eat sometimes.

Even inland a bit, not just at the seaside bit, there must be a pub that does a good Sunday Lunch.

Mamma's is a really nice Italian restaurant - I've been to the one in St.Annes more often than the Blackpool one but they are both good.

I will admit to not knowing much about where to get a decent Sunday Dinner in Blackpool - I go to my Mum's! I would suggest driving out to somewhere like Poulton-le-Fylde and finding a nice pub, rather than staying in Blackpool itself.

megandsoph · 26/09/2006 09:21

went to AJ's Bistro a couple of weeks ago on Toppin St, The food is gorgeous and customer service is fab!!

CheesyFeet · 26/09/2006 09:23

Gobbledigook - the best way is to get a tram up to Bispham, then walk along for a little way past all the placards and then get a tram the rest of the way down to Starr Gate. The illuminated trams do tours that last about 1.5 hours, these are nice for kids as you can go on a tram shaped like a rocket, train, hovercraft or boat. You can't get off these to walk some of the way though, they just do a circuit. You could walk through them but it's a long way! Driving would be OK but I find it very frustrating tbh. On a tram, you can just sit back & relax

Donbean · 26/09/2006 09:23

How about parking up, walking through the lights then getting a tram back to your car, the kids bloody love the trams.
Mammas is fab in town, there are tons of restraunts and pub places that do kids food. Just ask at the reception for suggestions they will be able to advise you on the nearest and easiest to get to.
Have a fab time, its tacky but we love it and the kids love it even more.

clumsymum · 26/09/2006 09:46

Cheers all, that's really helpful.

We used to go to blackpool nearly every year when I was a kid, but have only been a couple of times in the last 20 years, last time about 8 years ago, before ds, when I thought it was horribly tacky. But want to take ds before he's too old to find magic in the illuminations.

Gobbledigook · 26/09/2006 21:13

Thanks everyone - yes, might tram some of it and walk some of it. THe kid swill just love being out in the dark, never mind the lights!

Gobbledigook · 27/09/2006 14:55

ANy recommendations for where to park up in Blackpool?

megandsoph · 27/09/2006 16:22

hmm thats a hard one I use the talbot street car park for work its multi story or the wilkinsons car park. Not sure what road thats on but it's opporsite the main bus station.

CheesyFeet · 27/09/2006 16:58

It depends how long you need to park up for. Talbot Road and Wilkinsons car park are short stay iirc. You might be better off parking in the main car park in South Shore - near the football ground - if you are planning to stay all day and into the evening.

mummymelling · 27/09/2006 17:15

My DH is from Blackpool and whenever we go back to visit we usually take the kids to eat in QUILLIGANS its a cafe sorta place but fairly cheap and the fppd is lovely ,and the choice is staggering and they do kids portions of anything you want , and the best bit is they make their own chips ....so crunchy and fluffy on the inside, actually all their food is homemade [she says remembering the burgers yum ]

Gobbledigook · 27/09/2006 18:39

Will be there all afternoon and into the evening I think. So I want South Shore car park?

CheesyFeet · 28/09/2006 09:02

Gobbledigook - South Shore car park is definitely your best bet - I think the others close fairly early on iirc.

If you are doing the lights, you can walk up to the seafront and then walk/get a tram down to Starr Gate where the lights start. You can then get a tram up to Bispham, where they finish. Then walk back toward Blackpool past all the placards which the kids love to watch, and then hop on a tram back to Waterloo Road when you've had enough walking and cut inland back to the carpark from there.

My Mum lives in Blackpool, I think I will be paying her a visit next month sometime so I can take dd through the lights . I haven't seen them for years, I spent a season as a tram guard so I got heartily sick of them after a while

sct · 28/09/2006 09:44

hi - we live in garstang, about 8 miles from bpool. the best place (plaice haha) for fish and chips we reckon is 'the cottage', 31 newhouse road, marton - its a bit tricky to find, i'd multimap it if i were you. its a rick stein food hero place and always great. be prepared to sit in a lot of traffic for the illuminations if you are driving!!! have fun.
