October holidays, Ideas please!!

Skribble · 19/09/2006 10:00

No idea what to do for Oct holidays.

15th to 23rd Oct or part of.

Me, DH and 2 kids 7 and 9 yrs.

Budget £500 approx.

We are based in Scotland but anywhere UK or Europe.

We love paris but no cheap flights that fit that well. Hate Haven type stuff, but don't mind a caravan as a base. Relaxing hoilday with a couple of places nearby to visit. Or full on city break. Don't want kids clubs or loads of brits abroad. Like the idea of a lovely cosy log cabin with woodland walks and safe enough to turn the kids out for the afternoon.

Basicly open to all ideas apart from sunbathing on a crowded beach in the med. Not likely for £500 anyway .

Houseboat on Norfolk broads - less stress than a cruiser. Blakes Holidays do them, not that expensive IIRC

spykid · 19/09/2006 10:02

cottage in cornwall

Iklboo · 19/09/2006 10:10

7 nights in a houseboat (basically a cottage floating on water) in Yare, Norfolk that week - £302 total for 4 people (plus insurance & stuff I think)

Skribble · 19/09/2006 10:12

Thats interestng idea Iklboo, I will have a look at blakes.

Spykid thought about cornwall, wondered if it might not be so appealing without the sunshine, perhaps it is better when it is quite though.

Anybody tell me what region Beamish is in please.

carriemumsnet · 19/09/2006 11:43

beamish is county durham I think - outside Newcastle/Durham

Skribble · 19/09/2006 23:34

There are loads of other things to see near Beamish - we did that this summer. Alnwick Castle and gardens, Holy Island, Farne Islands, lots of other castles, several train rides, Hexham Jail and Seven Stories and Centre for Life in Newcastle.

moondog · 20/09/2006 13:32

You might get a wek in Turkey.
Prices waaaaaaaaay down.
Gorgeous place too.

Skribble · 20/09/2006 20:51

Don't fancy Turkey much, went to a campsite near Salou out of season and it was pretty grim, med doesn't seem to be my thing. Perhaps I have the wrong perception but last holiday was a big mistake and a big big waste of money.

Iklboo, I tried to find the house boats but couldn't on the Blakes site,

any idea on the Blakes site where County durham would come. They have lots of areas listed but I don't know which would include county durham or nearby.

Have you checked out Globespan. We have just booked to go to Nice for £209 for the three of us ( admittedly DS under 2) in October and then have booked what looks to be a nice appartment in Cote d'azur. Actually I know that the prices have gone up for the half term on the flights, but perhaps if you don't travel on the Saturday it may be cheaper. Check out www.cheznous.com for owners renting direct.

SecondhandRose · 24/09/2006 08:25

25 minutes from Stansted, 40 minutes by train to Central London. Near Cambridge, Duxford aviation museum, St Albans for romans and cathedral, Hatfield House, Knebworth House, Mountfichet castle. Great pubs and walks, big garden with trampoline, swings, horses and sheep in field next door. £490 for the week.

Rookiemum thanks I will have a look at globespan.

Secondhand that house looks nice, don't know if we want to drive that far south but saved to favourites for further consideration, have you stayed there yourself?

North York Moors - can visit York as well as countryside. Loads of holiday cottages in the area around Pickering.

Lilymaid · 24/09/2006 17:03

And if you want that log cabin in the woods, try Keldy cabins

Skribble · 24/09/2006 17:13

Thanks lillymaid, we have been to yorkshire last year, the cabins look good but a bit pricey, right at the top of the range, have you satyed in them?

OP posts:
Lilymaid · 24/09/2006 17:20

No haven't been though they have always been on the may be list. We stayed nearby but in rather expensive cottage (in development with swimming pool etc) If you are considering the Lake District, we stayed in cheap cottage in Caldbeck three years ago - nice people with young family and good value. (It was less than £300 then for week in August).

sammac · 24/09/2006 17:21

My in laws have been going to Keldy during the Oct week for about 10 years. They love it and are going again this year. They drive down from central scotland and rave about it.

Skribble · 24/09/2006 17:26

Thanks again, any recomendations for the county durham area?

SecondhandRose · 24/09/2006 18:13

Skribble · 24/09/2006 21:18
