Hi been 7 years since we`ve had an over seas holiday due to dh health. Think we are going to find it very expensive as there are 5 of us. We have plenty of luggage allowance between us so ideas would be lovely as to where we could save some euros! Food stuff/beach stuff etc. Last time we went to Majorca we were paying £5 a day for a sunshade, thinking of buying a collapsible one from Amazon. Thanks :)

Hi we are staying in an apartment, there might be one there if we are lucky! We used to have our own apartment in the same resort many moons ago and we used to provide everything for families.

It sounds silly but if there is a dishwasher in the appt just take 1 tablet a day from home plus a few extras so you don't pay over the top for them there.

Take kids inflatables with you, but new so they're flat packed and sooo much cheaper here than in the beach front shops there.

But a pack of Ice creams in supermarket and have those instead of buying them at €3 each! Same with cans of drinks.

Not sure my tips are going to save you that much ......sorry

Like the idea of my teens cooking :)
A small cool bag is a good idea for drinks, our apartment is just across the road from the beach so we will be having lunches in anyway. I went to town this afternoon and bought one lilo, two rubber rings with handles, one snorkel and mask, and one beach ball, all came to £25 so that should have saved us some money. Do you take much dry food stuff, is it ok to? The obvious things like tea, sugar, biscuits etc? Gosh I remember back in the late 80`s we used to freeze bacon/butter/sausages etc and pack them in a cool bag and just put it through with our bags, imagine doing that now Shock

Triplets - I've come across your posts before - glad you've sorted your holiday out - hope you have a lovely time!
I have teens too, and always take a jar of Marmite (if they like it!), teabags, sachets of hot choc, and this year, a couple of those Robinsons S'quashed pouches. They seem to drink gallons of squash and it's not easy to find in the supermarkets there! (Sorry if I've already told you all this Grin!!)

GretchenWiener · 06/07/2014 12:28

Agree inflatables.

GretchenWiener · 06/07/2014 12:29

If you have fussy kids take those pasta sauce pouches in flavours they like. They might not like local cheese it ham for lunch sarnies.

GretchenWiener · 06/07/2014 12:30

Take freeze able reusable water bottles to take to beach as ice then water

Mrsgrumble · 06/07/2014 12:33

What about packing bars of soap. So much lighter than lots of bottles. Two in one shampoo conditioner.

Aldi suncream is great.

Hotbot · 06/07/2014 13:17

Oh tribpot take the 25.00 quid stuff back and go to pound land. Loads of crap there incl lilos rubber rings snorkels etc and you won't care if they get trashed. There a re also loads of beach games as well . Take some cards, etc for the night as well.
Have a wonderful time.

ChickenFajitasAndNachos · 06/07/2014 19:32

I always take quite a few pairs of Speedo goggles for my teens. I buy them ebay. If you need ear plugs, insect repellant type supplies I also buy them in the Uk. I just find it makes are holiday budget go a bit further.

nancy75 · 06/07/2014 19:35

Sun tan lotion - take twice as much as you think you need. It is the most overpriced thing to buy in Mallorca

triplets · 06/07/2014 23:05

Brilliant tips thank you all :) I can`t quite believe we are going after so long. In the past 7 years it just been 2 or 3 night break when we can between treatment. Having three the same age means I can never pass on clothes from one to the other, the two boys wear the same size and then I have a girl, they always seem to be needing something. I am going to take cereal with me as well, they get through loads and I can imagine that will be pricey. Just be nice to relax, at least now they are old enough to go off on their own and leave m with my glass of Wine and a good book!

they will wear trunks and one pair of shorts in the evening and about 3 t shirts each
I always over pack kids stuff

noramum · 07/07/2014 11:03

I second the cool bag and tea bags. We self cater a lot and the other thing I always found lacking are small food container like tupperware and some sandwich bags. And we always take a decent pocket knife (in the suitcase obviously).

You don't get set honey, only the clear liquid one. As I hate this I always have one glass in my luggage now.

triplets · 07/07/2014 22:38

3cats I didn`t know you could get squash in pouches, do you mean to dilute? Dh drinks a lot of squash, since he had chemo he seems to be permanently thirsty.

Hello Triplets
I recognise you from the Puerto Pollensa forum. We always have a tight budget. Lilios I think are about 8 euros. Don’t shop at the Spar shops as very expensive. I take toasting bags, great for making toasted sandwiches at lunchtime. Also ice polls, if you have a freezer compartment. I tend to stock up on sachets of tomato sauce/salt/pepper/vinegar etc to take. Also take tea bags, and in Aldi they do lovely latte sachets very cheaply, so take a box of them too. So I can have a nice coffee whilst sitting on the balcony. In the evening always cards and ice cream from the hut.

I find Puerto Pollensa can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be.
I am sure you will have a lovely time.

emmameghan · 08/07/2014 13:54

Forgot to add, foil and sandwich bags and Fajita kit from Aldi too.

triplets · 09/07/2014 00:22

Hola Emma..........nice to meet a fellow fan of PP! Where do you stay when you go? We are at the beginning of the Pine Walk this time, so very easy access! I am sooooo looking forward to going back, there will be lots of memories, my son, my Dad and my Mum...........but we all had such happy times. Do you have any favourite restaurants? We must go and find Tangos that used to always be our favourite place. We have never eaten at Trios have you? Thanks for the tips :)

OP posts:
emmameghan · 09/07/2014 10:22

We normally stay at The Flora, I have two teenagers and they love it there, they always make lots of friends and meet up year after year. Tangos is right at the end of PP, so a bit of a walk from where you are. We haven't been, but have been to Trio. While I thought it was nice, teenage daughter found a hair in her lasagne ... you can imagine!!!

Near to you will be Al Fresco which is a lovely sandwich shop, they also do chicken, quiches etc to takeaway (its on the road up to The Flora from the Pine Walk).

Ambrosia (near the square) is also a favourite, very good value. Also La Cabana (Tapas) on the front near all the Chinese shops, also good value. and Casa Vila and Centric in the square. We tend to avoid the restaurants on the front as they tend to be more expensive.

For just a coffee or drink then I'd recommend the Yatch club, which looks very exclusive, but anyone can go and its lovely to sit and look at all the boats, and its not expensive. Also Bellavista, which is very kitsch, lovely courtyard with hammocks etcs...

If you don't have a pool, then I would recommend walking down to Laguna, which is on the road behind the I'll a Dor Hotel. Miguel the manager is great fun, and they have a lovely pool and sunbed area you can use is you buy a drink or food. Really nice food also.

Any other questions ask away ......

OriginofSymmetry · 09/07/2014 10:31

Roast chicken at The Golden Lion in Gommar is a must! Wink

nancy75 · 09/07/2014 11:36

I'm intruiged, we have a house in Puerto Pollensa and I have never been to Tangos - where is it? Is it worth a visit?

The yacht club that has been mentioned does lovely Paella

ElephantsNeverForgive · 09/07/2014 11:44

If you have a hire car get to Eroski's in Sa coma (I think there are others). Basically a huge Tesco. Massively cheaper than Spars.

It was walking distance from our aparta hotel, saved a fortune on water, soft drinks and lunch.

Water and soft drinks are a killer, make your teens be organised and take them with them.

Likewise never buy anything in sight of the sea.
