Where has a climate of 20 degrees and no rain in August?

Because that's where I want to go for my next holiday. I love the weather we're having at the moment. Last August we were in Portugal and it was much too hot for me and DH couldn't cope either. We are looking at staying in the UK this year, but where else could we go?

Anywhere like the Azores or Madeira will be hot in August. They are too far south to be cooler!"

I can assure you that The Azores are not hot in August. The average daily temperatures in Ponta Delgada range from 13 degrees in January to 22 degrees in August <a class="break-all" href="//[.www.holiday-weather.com/ponta_delgada/averages/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here. They are further south than the UK, but are in the middle of the Atlantic and subject to the weather fronts the Atlantic brings. Also they are volcanic and very hilly. You don't need to climb too far to experience a drop in the thermometer.

Madeira is warmer as it is much further south than The Azores which are due East of Lisbon. The Canaries are further south still.

I went to Vancouver in August and it most certainly did rain! The temperature was lovely.most of the time though.

GreyTS · 25/04/2014 21:18

Cape Town, or somewhere else in southern Africa, would be spring and from memory warm but not hot and very little if any rain

breatheslowly · 25/04/2014 21:26

I know it doesn't answer your question. But if you want clear blue seas, golden sand and the appearance of a tropical island without the heat, then the Isles of Scilly are beautiful.

Johnogroats · 25/04/2014 21:43

We spend a lot of time in the French alps. Even in August it is lovely, and if you ever find it a bit much, head up the nearest mountain....it s fab!

Whyjustwhyagain · 25/04/2014 21:48

Normandy?

SpottieDottie · 25/04/2014 21:50

Best I was told that Cambridge was one of the wettest places, it certainly seems to rain a lot.

Bunbaker · 25/04/2014 21:55

Oh yes, the Scilly Isles. I would love to go there, but it is such a faff from where we live. It would take us longer than getting to Greece.

How about the Channel Islands? We love Sark and have been there three times.

Nandocushion · 25/04/2014 22:04

Second Vancouver. It will be 24C or so but feels cooler as you're by the ocean.

We went to the Azores one summer, think it was July. Absolutely gorgeous. Spent one week on ponta delgada, followed by a week on terceira. Short flight, between them. We flew from Manchester via London and onto the Azores. I am not a sun worshipper, struggle in high temps, so have been to quite a few 'moderate climates'. The Azores was a real mixed bunch weather wise. I remember sitting on a black volcanic beach with a towel over my head, there was no cover and I was afraid of being burnt. Plenty of days, really warm and mild, low 20's. on terceira there are warm volcanic rock pools to swim in, so even when cool the water was great to swim in. Hmmm memories, I want to go back! Went whale watching, saw one leap out of the water, loads of dolphins all round the boat.

Other possibilities we have tried

Iceland in July, great holiday, IMO best for active pursuits, was quite chilly at times, and very windy. No rain.

Norway in July - great destination, gorgeous scenery, we were a bit unlucky with weather, rained a lot.

Corsica in September. Still very hot (30's) first 2 weeks, then starts to cool down quite rapidly last 2 weeks. We went last 2, first week perfect temp for us in the high 20's, last week much cooler with some rain. A local told us, their weather is very predictable and changes abruptly like this every year.

Nova Scotia - Canada . Best holiday ever, jaw dropping scenery, lots of activities, kayaking, river rafting etc. went June/July, not to hot in the 20's. perfect weather for getting out and about in. Think temps would be good in August, it's northern and coastal.

Finland, last 2 weeks in August. First week, lovely weather, sunny, no rain, low 20's. 2nd week, autumn arrived with a vengeance. On the last day of hol 31 st aug, we got up and there was ice on the car, had to de scrape before driving to airport. All the tourist stuff started to close in our 2nd week as their summer season was ending. Good holiday though, stayed one night in a bear hide and watched a mother bear and her cubs amble past. Unforgettable but chilly!

Hope this helps

August is generally sunny and dry in the Arctic.... 20 degrees could be optimistic, more like 18. But you will have a fab holiday!

Quinteszilla · 25/04/2014 22:34

By arctic, I should perhaps be more specific.... www.visittromso.no/en/

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/04/2014 22:36

Iceland in August. Stunning stunning holiday. Weather was wet cold and foggy! One day we had a deep low that cancelled our plans and we left the day before the first snowfall of the winter!

waterlego6064 · 25/04/2014 22:41

Vancouver is great. I've been twice in the summer and the temperature was just right- not too hot. Loads to see and do as well. Such a beautiful city. Great food. Ah, I need to go again :)

French Alps are lovely, as mentioned upthread, but can get very hot in August. It's a drier heat though, not that nasty mugginess we get here when it's hot. Swimming in the lakes is good for cooling down.

Lambstales · 25/04/2014 22:46

The Azores are brilliant. We went with the DDs a long while ago and it is still the holiday they talk about.
Furnas and the cooking/sulphur springs and the RIB boat were their highlights.
We hired a taxi driver for the day, well worth doing and very reasonable. He showed us some extra places that were lovely and some little hamlets and explained everything. Even the power stations that make them very self sufficient.

oscarwilde · 25/04/2014 23:28

Scandinavia, Estonia, Germany ?

barnet · 25/04/2014 23:34

Norway. It could rain though.

Lucked · 25/04/2014 23:42

Austria. Although not sure about the rain.

Best1sWest · 26/04/2014 09:36

Some fantastic suggestions, thank you all. Interestingly they are almost all on my list of places I want to go. Canada, Scandinavia, Germany, the Scilly isles.

We love Jersey but have been 5 times, weather there was ideal. Might consider the other channel Isles though.

Sark is like going back in time as there are no cars and hardly any crime. It is a brilliant place to explore so you need good walking shoes and tide timetable.

NCISaddict · 26/04/2014 09:43

If you like islands, have you thought of Alderney in the Channel Islands? It's got lovely beaches and is very peaceful. Generally nice weather at that time of year too.

apermanentheadache · 26/04/2014 09:46

Stockholm archipelago? Never too hot but usually clement in August.

Best1sWest · 26/04/2014 09:51

How expensive is Scandinavia though? I have heard terrible tales of people paying a fortune for a round of drinks?

OP posts:
Quinteszilla · 26/04/2014 09:59

Yes you better avoid buying rounds of drinks. Buy wine etc in the tax free going there. Alcohol and cigarettes are expensive. That would not put me off exploring a country. It is cheap to get there, compared to other places, like Vancouver.

SpringyReframed · 26/04/2014 10:04

West coast of Sweden. I've been there the last few Augusts and the weather has been very pleasant. I dont think it is any more expensive than the South of England to eat out etc. Alcohol is definitely more expensive but then it depends how much you drink whether that's a problem. Not sure about accommodation as I stay with friends but bet you could get some wonderful log cabins etc.

Copenhagen is lovely too.

If you like to drink a bit more Wink how about the Vendee in France? Less chance of rain than Brittany/Normandy but not too far to drive.
