Can we take a bottle of champagne in luggage to Turkey?

Dh, dc and I are going to turkey in a couple months. We would like to take a bottle of two of champagne with us, it'll be my birthday out there and thought it'll be nice to have a glass at the hotel.

Are we allowed to do this? Or are there restrictions?

Should we instead buy duty free in turkey instead?

Just to clarify - not in hand luggage, in suitcase.

You can I think but I'd just buy it there... Any reason you don't want to do that?

Will there be a fridge and ice bucket in your room.

Monty27 · 07/04/2014 01:11

I'm sure you'll get champagne in Turkey. I'd be worried about it exploding or breaking. Confused

ItsNotATest · 07/04/2014 01:16

Have you seen the way luggage handlers throw suitcases around???

Unless you want your clothes bathed in Champagne I'd either it get over there or in Duty Free in the Airport.

MrsCakesPremonition · 07/04/2014 01:18

Wouldn't the lack of pressure in the hold make the bottle explode?

Monty27 · 07/04/2014 01:31

I would have thought so MrsCakes and as Itsnot has said, the bags get thrown!

Not worth the hassle imho. Confused

VestaCurry · 07/04/2014 02:13

In hand luggage only otherwise it will explode

stonehairbrush · 07/04/2014 08:02

You can't put liquids over 100ml in hand luggage so you can't do that.

SixImpossible · 07/04/2014 08:07

We were given a bottle of champagne after we'd set off on holiday. It travelled with us to America and and back home again with no problems. It was well-wrapped and tightly wedged in the middle of our hard-sided suitcase.

I don't think luggage holds are un-pressurised any more.

SixImpossible · 07/04/2014 08:08

Though I wouldn't bother TBH. Much more holiday and special to buy something out there, something local that perhaps you wouldn't normally have at home.

mrsnec · 07/04/2014 08:14

It can be quite expensive in Turkey and I've never tried a turkish wine I like. I have also had bottles explode in my luggage so, I'd buy it in the airport airside before you board or maybe even on the plane.

Branleuse · 07/04/2014 08:15

buy it there

threepiecesuite · 07/04/2014 08:17

We're going to Turkey too and I was wanting to take a bottle of Robinsons orange squash in our luggage! We went last year in Aug and 4yo DD would hardly drink anything. The juice was awful and she didn't like the taste of the water or milk.

PotteringAlong · 07/04/2014 09:34

Buy it in duty free

NigellasDealer · 07/04/2014 09:37

~I would not personally take champagne or squash for fear of the bottle breaking or splitting en route.
i am sure there are shops in Turkey though.....
threepiecesuite the juices in TUrkey are lovely eg dimes sour cherry nectar, Robinsons is minging in comparison.

threepiecesuite · 07/04/2014 10:05

I think my 4yo might turn her nose up at sour cherry nectar, although I think it sounds lovely! We are not the type to seek out full English breakfasts etc but we did struggle wuth juice, it was all so syrupy and sugary and fluorescent orange coloured.

NigellasDealer · 07/04/2014 10:10

eww that does sound nasty!! have you looked what is in Robinson's though? Grin

threepiecesuite · 07/04/2014 10:30

Aw I know but she only has a drop to dilute, she was only having plain water til not long ago, I don't think we've done too bad. She's never had a drop of anything fizzy. I'm not sure what else young children would drink to stay hydrated!

WishUponAStar88 · 07/04/2014 10:35

I have taken wine in the hold before and it was fine wrapped up in towels/ clothes etc. Otherwise if you're worried and feel it won't be the same over there then you could buy in duty free at the airport before you fly.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 07/04/2014 10:35

You can get champagne in Turkey but it is very expensive, even in duty free. I haven't taken champagne in my suitcase but most years we bring back several bottles of wine and they always go in the case. We wrap them in a plastic bag and then wrap a towel around them and put them right in the middle.

Dimes cherry nectar is lovely, my DD loves it, it isn't sour at all, it is very sweet, it is just cherry juice. You can get all kinds of juice out there, I love cherry, red orange and strawberry, you can also 100% pure orange juice too, which is like we get at home. They don't have much in the way of squash in Turkey so if you want it take it with you.

PuggyMum · 07/04/2014 10:35

We do this all the time on pretty much every holiday. We buy champers on offer and take a bottle in each piece of hold luggage!

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 07/04/2014 10:37

threepiecesuite, most children drink plain water don't they? I know mine do.

Rosa · 07/04/2014 10:38

Am sure I have written this before. 1 broken bottle of red wine in a plastic bag in a case in the hold . Caused damage to another 15 bags in the hold with it. The owner of the case with the red wine in had to pay for the damage of all the other cases....

threepiecesuite · 07/04/2014 10:49

I'm going to be honest and say no. Apart from at pre-school where it's water only, all children I know and see socially drink juice.
Anyway sorry to go off-topic!

girlywhirly · 07/04/2014 12:53

Buy it airside at the duty free here, put in hand luggage and carefully transport to your accommodation. Lots of people buy their favourite spirits at the airport to consume in their rooms/ on balconies to save a bit of money on bar bills during their holiday.
