BaconAndAvocado · 30/12/2013 20:40

We're a family of 2 parents and 3 DCs and are planning on an once-in-a-lifetime Florida holiday in 2015..

We'd like to stay at a villa for 2 weeks in Orlando to do,the parks then 1 week somewhere by a beach, Clearwater?

Will have to go in school holidays.......

Any ideas on ball park figure?

Tia

Thanks for that human

Really looking forward to Discovery Cove, although our 16 year old is harping on about animal welfare etc. Are the dolphins properly looked after?

I told him that in the US animal welfare is a big priority, I hope I'm right.

We paid £185 for out health insurance.

Your 16 year old has a point re captive dolphins, even if well looked after should dolphins be forced to do tricks etc and swim with people and live in a confined space. Am having same dilemna myself at moment. Love seeing dolphins in wild but not sure supporting industry of captive dolphins is positive.

Hello everyone!
Florida is certainly a dream destination and in my opinion is the perfect place for a family friendly holiday.

The best advice that I can give to Florida first timers is to do really your home work; research on the internet, buy a guide book or ask your Florida savvy friends!

For Walt Disney World Resort specific questions check out - disneyworldforum.disney.go.com/panelists.aspx?page=1&pid=318
& try 'The Brit's Guide to Orlando' for a little bedtime reading!

Yes, it's an expensive holiday; but oh my goodness is it worth it!

TheHumancatapult · 19/03/2014 08:29

cost wise it can be as cheap or expensive as you like .my hotel and flight costs for a month is cheaper than a month in europe bonus of sun in nov too

Awks · 20/03/2014 20:07

shitting hell we go a week on Saturday and I could not believe it costs so much. Then I added up everything we have spent and yes, it does so if the kids utter one moan, they are dead

goodgrief54 · 21/03/2014 07:38

Awks that made me laugh! I know that feeling.

We go in 52 days (I have an app that tells me! ) and I can't believe how much we are spending. told kids a couple of weeks ago and they are hyper already. . Think dd may burst before we even get there.

my dh has been told we will need £4k spends which seems ridiculous to me for 17 days. We already paid for Disney tickets, accommodation, car and we are staying in a self catering apartment thing at orange lake resort. Surely £4k is a ridiculous amount? !

TheHumancatapult · 22/03/2014 07:27

goodgrief
thats a lot amount of money I don't think your need anything like that .Are you doing character meals at wdw or planning eat table service on site ? as that can bump the costs up

Awks · 26/03/2014 21:21

Well we aren't taking that much, 250 dollars a day is my limit and I am no skinflint. Does your dh imagine you will be dining on powdered unicorn horn, eaten from Pocohontas's navel or something?

goodgrief54 · 27/03/2014 22:43

I am pleased is not just me that thinks this is ridiculous! thank you for your reassurance that I won't actually have to sell a kidney to pay for this. ..Wink

ChestyNut · 29/03/2014 19:29

Very envious that Awks will be on her way.

You can keep both kidneys ( for now) good Grin

Crutchlow35 · 30/03/2014 14:25

We are planning on October 2015. I have been told indirect flights to either Tampa or Miami can come up much cheaper.

ChestyNut · 30/03/2014 16:38

I don't trust myself to not get on the wrong plane crutch Grin

MOSagain · 05/04/2014 08:11

BA flights to tampa, direct from Gatwick or Heathrow can be a lot cheaper than flying to Orlando, we saved £1,200 for 6 of us by doing that. About an extra 45 minutes drive but worth it

Tranquilitybaby · 05/04/2014 08:16

Around £10-12k if you're doing all the parks and going in the school holidays.

DelGirl · 05/04/2014 08:30

Would it be much cheaper in june out of uk summer holiday time?

DelGirl · 05/04/2014 08:46

I'm asking for myself btw

BellaVita · 05/04/2014 09:06

Bacon, once you have made the booking for the holiday, book your Discovery Cove dolphin time.

Florida weather is tropical and quite often especially in Aug there could be a huge down pour in the afternoon and if it is torrential then the swims can be called off.

Book your dolphin time as early in the morning as you can get (ours was 8.30). We got there are 7.30, checked in, got measured for the wet suits/jackets, you have a talk with the instructor (there will be others doing the dolphin swim at the same time).

When you have finished, you can go for some breakfast (all food and drink throughout the day is free) and then the day is yours to explore Discovery Cove.

It will be a truly lovely day.

BaconAndAvocado · 06/04/2014 20:41

Thanks Bella the travel agent phoned yesterday to let us know Discovery Cove is booked, on my birthday!

Didn't ask what time it's booked Hmm

Next thing on the list is to book a disney princess character meal for my daughters birthday (yes, August is a bit of a birthday fest in our family)

Any idea how I go about that from the UK?

OP posts:
BellaVita · 06/04/2014 21:38

Mine in August too!

We did it through the website of Discovery Cove.

I suspect you will just need to go on to the website for the character meal (we never did these as my DS's weren't interested).

If you have booking references I cannot see why it cannot be done.

Are you going to Seaworld? If you do and want to see the
Shamu show, you need to start queuing for that about an hour or more before the show starts.

Aquatica (opposite Seaworld) closes it's gates around 10.30am as it will up to full capacity, it reopens them about 3/4pm. We used to get there really early (like 7.30am), the traffic will already be queuing to get in.

Typhoon Lagoon (IMO) is the best waterpark.

Do the rides in the parks back to front. Ie go the ride furthest away and work backwards. There will be less of a queue and believe me in August they will be huge (90 mins plus).

Single rider option is the way to go on the rides that just you or DH or one of the children want to go on. You more or less get to go to the front of the queue to fill a gap.

If you have a villa/apartment, put small bottles of water in the freezer the night before you go to a park and then pop them into the bottom of your rucksacks (sandwiches on top). It will keep the sandwiches cool and by mid morning the ice will have started to melt and you have for nice cold drinks.

Mexico is also lovely, if you do your third week there, visit Chichen Itza. Pick a day though where there could be a good chance of rain/cloudy as it is inland and very very hot. The rain (which probably won't last long and it will still be warm) will be a welcome relief.

BellaVita · 06/04/2014 21:47

9.00 9.20 & 9.55 are the only available times for the Disney princes breakfast on my birthday according to their website.

We didn't book discovery cove through a travel agent, we booked it directly with their website.

BaconAndAvocado · 08/04/2014 18:12

Wow! Thanks for all the great tips bella Smile

There's so much to remember!

All adults over the age of 18 when checking in need to show photo ID so do not forget this!.

plipplops · 09/04/2014 20:58

We're going (2 adults 2 kids) in October, 2 weeks at the Animal Kingdom Lodge with dining plan and car for £5780, and have upgraded to premium economy for the flight home for £399.
