All you London people - just how hot will it be on the tube tomorrow???

I've got to get across London with DS tomorrow and the tube is the obvious choice, but just how hot and stuffy will it be down there??? I am considering a bus which takes twice as long but don't want DS (6) passing out!!! Any help gratefully received.....

Very hot, I'd say.
Where are you going to and from? The buses are horrible too.

donnie · 19/07/2006 21:07

just don't go....

Kelly1978 · 19/07/2006 21:07

I heard 52c. I wouldn't take kids down there tbh. Can you not drive?

marthaplatypus · 19/07/2006 21:15

I was dreading a trip today but was pleasently surprised. Admittedly, I was without children and didn't have to travel far but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. We travelled at 10.30am and 2.30pm on the Piccadilly line. Seats both times and some air movement in carriage. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it over other forms of travel, though I heard that the buses were hotter than tubes yesterday. Apparently they keep their heating on...?! Best of luck anyway. Don't forget to take bottled water. And a hand fan might be good if you happen to have one.

fishie · 19/07/2006 21:21

is meant to be a bit cooler tomorrow you should be ok on tube - some lines are hotter than others, which one are you on?

bus was unbearable today, really don't recommend that.

TheBlonde · 19/07/2006 21:23

It should be a little cooler tomorrow

As MPP says take water with you

Stuffiness depends on teh line imho

I miss London, btu couldn't face the tube this time of year. I went in august one year and it was unbearable.

charliecat · 19/07/2006 21:29

a bloke on channel 4 took a thermometer with his today and it was 51.

puff · 19/07/2006 21:38

why can't we be as civilised as New York - air con on subway and buses

crunchie · 19/07/2006 22:04

I have been doing the odd journey by tube and provided it isn't rush hour it isn't that bad. Take a bottle of water and you'll be fine

littlemadam · 19/07/2006 22:04

Going from Oxford circus to Brixton, so its all on the Picadilly line. I thought it was meant to be cooler by tomorrow, wish I wasn't going now!! I am getting the train from Leeds, so can't drive, though could get the bus, or a taxi...

marthaplatypus · 19/07/2006 22:08

That's the Victoria line. Glad there are no changes. Hope it's quick and you get a seat!

littlemadam · 19/07/2006 22:11

Right guys, have now got lots of water in cooler bag, battery fan, magicool spray, and some of those cool forehead pads......thanks for all your help, did anyone else go on the tube today?? And when is rush hour (dumb question I know) but if we are travelling back about 6.45pm is it still going on....I live in the sticks where three sheep are a traffic jam!

My DD gets taxi-sick especially in this heat. Buses also pretty grim. As long as it's not rush-hour I'd go on the tube.

drosophila · 19/07/2006 22:11

There is a bus that goes that way. I think it's the 159 heading towards Streatham and you can get it on the corner of oxford street and Regent Street. On the Plus side the route takes you around Big Ben.

littlemadam · 19/07/2006 22:11

Thaks Martha, would have ended up in the wrong pace!!

Spatz · 19/07/2006 22:12

Still rush-hour at 6.45, but you can usually wait for a quieter train if it's heaving. Quite a long way down to Brixton on the bus.

GeorginaA · 19/07/2006 22:12

My top tip for tube travel - get one of those teeny plastic travel atomiser squirty spray bottle things (that's the technical term ) from boots - you know the sort of things you get perfume in. They only cost pence.

Fill with water and then spray your face and ds's face liberally with water while on the tube. Keeps you cool and less smelly than sweat

GeorginaA · 19/07/2006 22:13

(actually, equally handy for bus travel or just sitting around on your arse in a pub garden )

Mercy · 19/07/2006 22:19

Also it's normally quieter right at the back or front end of the tube. A lot of people get in the carriage which lines up with the exit/entrance part of the station.

littlemadam · 19/07/2006 22:40

Thanks everyone!! Will get tube from KX to Oxford circus to try it out, and if it is really unbearable will try the bus (159 thanks!) Looks like next week wouldn't be any better tho!

OP posts:
Reginald · 19/07/2006 22:43

I think the bus will be even hotter tbh

the victoria line is very quick and not the hottest line (central is the worst I think!)

Blu · 19/07/2006 22:47

The number 3 bus, as well. Check to see if that are no delays on the tube before you get on!

hunkermunker · 19/07/2006 22:50

Buses hotter than tubes, IMO and IME.

Both pretty unbearable though.
