What's the best sight in the world you have seen?

I'm not very well travelled but found the view of Mount Vesuvious (sp?) from the plane a week after it errupted quite something. And the climb on the motorway to the Mont Blanc tunnel (pre accident, 12 yrs ago) wonderful.

I know a retired pilot who, of all the views in the world he has seen, thinks the most amazing is the drive down Glen Docherty, 20 miles from where I live! I don't think it's very good on Google Earth. NW Scotland if you're intersted.

I was wondering what your favourite view is?

I second the vote for Bryce Canyon in Utah - it's gobsmacking. Plus the outrageous stars above the Grand Canyon.

The harbour in Calvi, Corsica lit up with the lights of the posh folks boats... Venice by night in a gondola... Dolphins jumping and diving off just twenty yards off the coast at the Black Isle in Scotland. The view from George Street in Edinburgh down over the Forth towards Fife plus the Old Town in Edinburgh on a sunny cold winters day.

What a brilliant thread.

Glowwom caves in NZ - floating along in the darkness looking up at them - they looked like starts - magical.

Cathederal cove and so many other places of jaw-dropping beauty in NZ

Fireworks over the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 2001

Fozdoiguacu waterfalls in Brazil/Agentina - so big its it crosses two borders. So emence that you can feel the spray in the air from 1/2 a mile away.

The corcovado in brazil. Photo's don't do it justice, you can't get an idea of the perspective - how huge it is and how difficult it must have been to build unless you see it close.

The sugerloaf mountain, it's parallel to the corcovado and when we were stood on it, the corcovado looked like it was floating on clouds.

7-tiered waterfall in Thailand with aqua-blue pools you could swim in.

Fab post, I'm all nostalgic now!

Have to agree with apronstrings

Seeing my DS for the first time and staring into those big dark eyes.

MamaG · 21/07/2006 21:57

Another saddo - seeing my two babies

biglips · 21/07/2006 21:58

and me agreeing the same thing as that was the first thing that popped into my head when my first born daughter was born - it was surreal and a amazing view of my daughter

wanderingstar · 24/07/2006 20:20

Apart from my 4 newborn babies' faces, I'd say:

Dawn spreading over the Himalayas, seen from Ladakh. I was nearly in tears..

The view from The 3 Chimneys on NW Skye on a late June evening - seeing the outer Hebrides just glowing in the twilight.

The sea crashing onto the rocks on various north Cornish beaches.

wrinklytum · 24/07/2006 20:52

The kids when first born.
Macchu Picchu
Flying over Andes into Santiago, phenomenally beautiful

orangegiraffe · 24/07/2006 20:55

Apart from my gorgeous babies.
The eye of a typhoon

Frizbe · 24/07/2006 21:09

Like everyone else the 1st sight of my two lovely dd's

But also:

Northern lights from lower scotland were very good a few years ago, totally unexpected by all including the news people who raved about it the next day

A fabulous place in wales, that only Moondog and I know about (we may have told sallystrawberry too one late night!)

The golden gate bridge when it glows golden and also the grandcanyon at twilight is quite nice.

WideWebWitch · 24/07/2006 21:09

Apart from my children obviously!, I'd say

landing at the old Hong Kong airport and being able to see into peoples front rooms, it was like the best roller coaster in the world

watching an enormous red gold harvest moon sit on the water between Dartmouth and Kingswear castles in Devon with dh when we'd just met

Wanderingstar, I'm envious of the 3 chimneys, was it amazing?

Am envious of Macchu Piccu and the Taj Mahal too, would love to see both of those.

BonyM · 24/07/2006 21:17

Aside from my children's gorgeous faces - Yosemite is stunning, Grand Canyon, driving up through the winding roads of Sedona.

My favourite though has to be the view from the bed of villa 101, Banyan Tree, Seychelles. Crashing waves on a perfect golden beach, just glimpsed through palm trees.

soapbox · 24/07/2006 21:27

Queen of tack perhaps - but the first ride down the strip in Las Vagas was mind blowing!

All the excess of it! Probably will never go back, but was worth seeing once in my life.

The Grand Canyon with a light snow fall was good.

Sailing round Hawaii in a catermeran was good - great beaches and such turquoise blue sea.

Too many parts of Scotland to mention really, but include Loch Ness, Loch Lomond, Loch Katrine, and some of the beaches right up in Sutherland.

Yosemite, Hong Kong, Bali, so many places really. Who wants to choose - let;s just enjoy them all

soapbox · 24/07/2006 21:28

Actually I lie - we probably will go back to Vegas - we've promised the children we;ll take them when they are both 21! Mind you, by then they'd probably die than go on holiday with their parents{grin]

Mirage · 24/07/2006 22:02

Bryce Canyon Utah,
Grand Canyon
Sedona
Flying into Las Vegas at night-all the black nothingness of desert & then an explosion of light as you come over the Muddy Mountains & see Las Vegas.
Santa Monica Beach Califonia
Eyam Village in the Peak District
Lots of bits of London
Egg Harbour,Door Peninsula,Wisconsin
Chicago from the river
The view from our milking parlour over the fields.
The view of the village as I drive home-horse chestnut trees, half timbered pub, cricket pitch & ancient church.
The view from my living room window,a beautiful sycamore tree yhat looks like a work of art against the sunset & looks great any time of year.

joelallie · 25/07/2006 17:27

Amongst all these exotic and wonderful places I am almost embarrased to add the sight of Glastonbury Tor rising out of white mist at sunrise, as you drive down from the Mendip Hills.

The view of Loch na Keal as you come over the top of the hill on the Scan road, islands of Ulva and Gometra is sight - Isle of Mull.

OK...for more conventional breath-taking sights -Table Mountain in South Africa.
