What is Nottingham like for a City Break?

I have no idea, is it worth a visit? No offence to anyone but i've just been told it's not very nice. Is that true?

The centre is really nice and lots of shopping to be had there. Plenty to keep you busy for a couple fo days I should think. The castle is a modern building but has some ice grounds to walk in.

There is a MN meet at Nottingham castle next month. Can't be that bad!!! LOL!

There is a big crime and gin problem is certain parts of the city, but these are not really places you are likely to visit on a city break. DH went to uni there in the early 90s and the gun think was still there. He and his friends had guns pointed at them as some men asked for mney, etc. Luckily it turned out to be a replica but you'd never know that at the time.

Incidently I went to a really nice restaurant in Nottingham on Tuesday night - Harts. Just behingd the castle I think. Was fab food.

That all sounded perfect ( not taking the boys ) until the violence bit, we would be out and about at night and wouldn't want to step into the dodgy bars.

The gun and crime bit is more out of town I think, in certain areas. Much of the city centre is wine bars and trendy bars, and restaurants. And safe! Lots of changes in recent years.

hulababy · 13/07/2006 18:26

I have been to the theatres in the centre at night and it has felt safe.

fairyfly · 13/07/2006 18:35

Well i would love to visit the Galleries and comedy clubs and after much thinking i'm not quite ready to go away for the weekend in the m9iddle of nowhere, romantic or not.

Do you know what the Park Plaza or the Lace Market Hotel is like as we would be staying on one of those.

Sorry, never stayed over in a hotel there.

Tutter · 13/07/2006 19:44

sorry but lol at hula's 'crime and gin problem'

hulababy · 13/07/2006 19:45

LOL!

hewlettsdaughter · 13/07/2006 19:49

I think the Lace Market Hotel would be pretty nice - haven't actually been there but was brought up in Nottm and have seen that hotel.

mandymac · 13/07/2006 19:59

Lace market hotel is very nice - boutique type with a good bar/restaurant. It is slap bang in the middle of the nicer end of town, so you wouldn't have far to go for nice bars in the evening. Regarding trouble, like most places, if you avoid the 'Palais' type nightclubs, etc and stick to the smaller independant bars rather than the bigger chains you should be fine. Shopping is getting better and better, we have a Whistles, big Ted Baker, Zara, Huge new Top Shop.

I am a londoner originally, but lived up here for 10 years and mostly think it is a good place to live or visit .

Woo hoo! Fairyfly is coming to town.
Do we need to stay in?

fairyfly · 13/07/2006 23:18

No but could you come up to me in Bars and say, wow you truly are the most beautiful woman to ever walk the streets of Nottingham, in ear shot of my boyfriend.

Maybe send over a bottle of champagne to our table with a little note off Butch. Thankyou.

Does anybody know if any Design Exhibitions are on?

Squarer · 14/07/2006 10:01

No problem, but can I be Nigel?

When are you here? It would help with the whole exhibition thing....

fairyfly · 14/07/2006 10:24

This weekend, i cannot find anything on the web and would prefer a more design based exhibiton than a fine art one. Thankyou Nigel.

I'll have a look in the paper later today then - but bear in mind we are culturally bereft, prefering drugs and gun crime...

Squarer · 14/07/2006 10:32

and bad spelling....

fairyfly · 14/07/2006 10:32

and Gin

Just me

It does tend to be mostly "fine" art and installation art round these parts. Have you heard of the Sky Mirror by Anish Kapoor? It is installed adjacent to the Playhouse theatre, where you can sip at your, er, gin, and admire its magnificifience.

zippitippitoes · 14/07/2006 10:49

I stayed in a hotel in Nottingham once years ago...couldn't find anywhere in the town centre and ended up asking in the police station..they sent us to one nearby and it was a brothel I'm sure!

Squarer · 14/07/2006 10:53

Wouldn't suprise me! Especially if it was near the station and began with a G!
