I have no idea, is it worth a visit? No offence to anyone but i've just been told it's not very nice. Is that true?

I used to enjoy going there pre-kids to visit friends, good bars and clubs I recall, didn't really go for the cultural side so don't know what;s available

If you get chance, go to Paul Smiths. It is an old Georgian townhouse and Mr Smith has renovated it to the most original standard, and it houses part of his collection of pieces of furniture and venetian glass chandaliers as well as his clothes and things. They tend not to mind rubber-neckers if you confess to your purpose in being there (unless you really do look like someone who would spend £800 on a small leather purse that is...)

I'll try to think of more things like this during the day in case I can't find any exhibitions in the paper. Paul Smiths came to me whilst cleaning the bog.

fairyfly · 14/07/2006 12:11

Fantastic, i will go to the sky mirror, thats a great start.

Maybe Pauls Smiths (i look like someone who would steal a small leather purse...)

I was going to show my boyfriend this thread but i dont want him nipping out in the middle of the night and getting lost near a bus station looking for places begining with a G.

Lol Sobernow - don't think that anyone has run Nottingham down. In fact, they have built it up a bit. Hope you're not disappointed FF
I have the text out to my friend of Installation Artists to see if he knows of anything exciting, but quite frankly I'm not holding my breath.
You are a couple of weeks early for Anish Kapoors exhibition at Angel Row Gallery according to the Sky Mirror website, which is a shame.
I believe that there is a Warhammer exhibition and workshop at Nottingham Castle. Hmmm. Hold me back.

zippitippitoes · 14/07/2006 12:40

what about this one parks, lace and female genitalia

"Surface Gallery presents Hortus, a two person exhibition by Danica Maier and Jane Thurley. Coming from the Latin word for garden or park and also 18th Century Slang for female genitalia, the title of the exhibition reflects Thurleys occupation with re-creating well known parks and public spaces, whilst also referencing the sexual antics within Maiers installations. "

outdoor performance of The Railway Children at Nottingham Castle
Welllll..... it starts at 6.30, you take your own beer and picnic and then stagger out into town afterwards.

fairyfly · 14/07/2006 13:28

Thankyou, you are marvellous, i will look at all of that in more detail when i have stripped my body of the masculine hair look.

a bit more about making journeys from the guardian

..Making Journeys
Nottingham
Four artists reflect in film, photography and sculpture on journeys, both real and imaginary, physical and cultural. Fond details of home and belonging contrast with scenes of loss and displacement. Margareta Kern's film tells the story of her mother's tailoring business in Bosnia. Michael Samuels presents the sculptural desert islands of his dreams. Ori Gersht reveals oppressive historical secrets in the Polish landscape and Sunil Gupta records self-searching journeys across India, North America and England. This cultural collage makes everything appear both dangerously familiar and delightfully strange. Or, of course, delightfully familiar and dangerously strange.
Robert Clark

Oh Hairy one, I have returned from my foray into the outside world....
From the local rag, and skipping lightly over Warhammer which is the main event with it's own full page spread we have:

Angel Row gallery: Into the light of things - photographs, sculpture, drawing and short film evoke in different ways the Natural World

Brewhouse Yard Museum: No, too dull for words. Sorry.

Djangoly: as per Zippi

Keans Head, Lace Market: Graham Dunn Nature Photography

Nottingham Castle: Art on The Stairs. The Artist applies bold blocks of colour painted directly onto the walls of the gallery. (I think I sometimes must miss the point of such things..)

Surface Gallery: as per Zippi

Weston Gallery, Lakeside Arts Centre: A Moment in Time - Stories form the Photographic Collection. Photographs from the archives of the University of Nottingham on display for the first time.

So, in terms of design, the answer is probably no!

Other things to do of a Saturday evening include the Ghost Walk which starts off at the Salutation Inn, Maid Marion Way at 7pm and ends in haunted caves (£4)
Guts and Gore Tour with Ezekial Bone starts at The Old Angel Inn in Hockley (near the Lace Market), turn up event but call 07941 210986 to reserve (£5) www.bone-corporation.co.uk
Castle Cave Tours 2pm and 3pm (£2). Discover the secret caves under the castle and find out about the castle's turbulent past in this tour which is strenuos and includes steep steps.
Nottingham Patchwork Group Meeting. Oh damn, that's not til Monday - sorry!

Squarer · 14/07/2006 15:30

Angel Row Gallery into the light of things.
I think Angel Row Gallery is free to enter too. The Dragon (think that is what it is called now) is just over the road and does top notch food.

Squarer · 14/07/2006 15:38

\www.bone-corporation.co.uk/website.htm\ezekial bone} actually sounds rather theatrical and entertaining! It will take you round the Lace Market where you are staying.

I know it's not what you asked for but I have appointed myself your personal yet etherical tour guide

Squarer · 14/07/2006 15:39

ezekial bone

zippitippitoes · 14/07/2006 15:40

will we see ff returning from her weekend with charming lacy accoutrements

zippitippitoes · 14/07/2006 15:41

squarer

etherical

Guts and Gore tour is Sunday at 3pm btw. Not Saturday. I lied.
Right, I am going to stop talking to myself now. Have a great weekend! But if you do need any more info (on anything other than exhibitions as I think Zippi and I have exhausted Nottingham on that front) give me a nudge

Squarer · 14/07/2006 15:44

Gone? The crazy fool!

Squarer · 14/07/2006 15:45

Zippi - yes, it is entirely my own word, and I like it

zippitippitoes · 14/07/2006 15:46

she obviously sneaked off while we were busy just in case we tried to gate crash

Squarer · 14/07/2006 15:47

Oh and Zippi - you have no idea (I hope!) of what passes as Nottingham Lace these days. Think lurid pink polyester with some polyester lace attached. Sometimes even with a picture of Robin Hood on it

zippitippitoes · 14/07/2006 15:48

she'll like that..is it in the form of a saucy outfit?

Squarer · 14/07/2006 15:49

Oh, I have that one covered Zippi. I'm camping outside the Lace Market hotel this evening with a gimlet eye out for any one that looks like they might steal a purse
