Romantic long weekend away (no kids!), Ideas on where??

Wisp · 26/06/2006 15:53

We have decided what the hell- lets do it, after our parents offering to look after the children, and us to "enjoy a break"

DH and I would love a couple of nights to ourselves, as a treat ! and it will be our first time on our own in 5 years ( Have 3 children under 5).

Would like to throw the boat out and go abroad, Have thought Barcelona, Venice, Paris etc stuck for choice!!
Any ideas please ? I want this to be really special- the thought of going out without children/pushchairs/nappy bags etc is bliss !
Thanks

We had our honeymoon in Verona and it was lovely. Very romantic seeing Romeo and Juliet's balcony too...

meowmix · 26/06/2006 16:12

Rome is wonderful, we had the most romantic time there, so chilled. and the food was outstanding.

OR in the UK try Loch Torridon House Hotel - amazing

nailpolish · 26/06/2006 16:13

paris

definitely

melrose · 26/06/2006 16:15

Look online and see where is cheapest to fly to, then you can splash out more when you are there, cos you'll have a good time wherever you go! Paris is beautiful though!

nailpolish · 26/06/2006 16:20

would you consider staying in the UK? Edinburgh is very romantic, has some lovely 'boutique' hotels for a cosy, romantic time, and there are lovely restaurants, the old town is lovely for strolling hand in hand..

nailpolish · 26/06/2006 16:21

oops, od'd on the 'lovelys' there

Wisp · 26/06/2006 16:27

Funny you say Edinburgh! We all went camping last week up in the Highlands, and spent a day in Edinburgh, The kids loved the optical illusions museum, DH and I said how nice to do it on our own!!
Argh Im torn between something far away and totally different (havn't been abroad for 12 years )
Or something close to home- then near to the children if something went wrong!

that sounds lovely wisp

you could even go to new york...

prague...

Florence...

how on earth are you going to choose? lol

agree you should check flight prices and that might make up your mind for you

meowmix · 26/06/2006 16:48

depends when you are going too. Paris is muggy in August (so is Rome mind you) but both are gorgeous in Sept. If edinburgh in Aug watch out for the festival, prices rocket

melrose · 26/06/2006 16:50

..Edinburgh festival was one of the best weekend away me and DH ever had...

nailpolish · 26/06/2006 16:53

dh and i are going to a wedding in edinburgh during the festival in aug, the bride and groom sent the invitations last august, due to the fact that hotels rooms go so quickly, booking a year in advance is a must

!!!

i lived there for 10 or so years, dh and i have a weekend away there every year just the 2 of us

Mascaraohara · 26/06/2006 16:56

Rome is lovely, great if you can get 3 days there and the things like the Trevi foutain etc are beutiful at night, fatastic food and cheap to get to!

Just mind your bags on the metro

chubbleigh · 26/06/2006 16:57

Was just about to recommend Edinburgh when I read to the top of this thread. You have to choose which time you want to go to Edinburgh according to what you want to do. If you want to party and stay up all night and do loads then you should definately head for the festival, it is fabulous, I can't recommend it highly enough, it will cost you plenty though, same goes for Hogmonay and the winter festival, brilliant. If you want a romantic time going to resturants for nice dinners and gentle walks around museums then pick a time out of high season or freshers week. Don't go just either side of festival season either as the place is building site as festival is so full on. I have a love affair with Scotland, I used to live there but now live in
Devon and miss it soooo much.

Me and sis took our Mum on a short break to Salzburg a few years ago, it is lovely as is surronding area. It has a summer music festival (classical) but do not know dates.

Also I really like all the Andulusian cities. Malaga suffers by its association with Torremolenos, but kept me interested. Seville and Granada are good too, the Alhambra and all that.

chubbleigh · 26/06/2006 17:00

Must add Glasgow is also a lot of fun, especially on a Saturday night.

Wisp · 26/06/2006 17:03

Thanks so much, Im going to sit down with Dh tonight and look at flight prices and dates etc. We're thinking August time.
Im in a whirl of holiday excitement now !

whispers
Seriously contemplating San Francisco !!

What about Lisbon....you can traval along for the coast if you are there for a few days.

moondog · 26/06/2006 17:12

How about Marrakech??
It is fantastic and Easyjet have just starteds flights there.

swedishmum · 26/06/2006 20:01

Wasn't enthralled by Marrakech myself, but as I was 7m pregnant with chest infection, inlaws and 3 kids in tow, may not have been rational. We're going back without kids to give it a second chance. It will be boiling though. I loved Rome - we went in August. Would avoid Venice in August - too many dippy tourists, although we had a good holiday in Venice Lido in August. I loved Barcelona too. Prague great, but same tourist conveyor belt thing in season. Siena's lovely, or Florence. Don't rate Milan. I love the Italian Lakes. New York could be boiling but I think it's still my favourite city ever. Tallinn would get boring after a day or so imo. Istanbul is gorgeous but would be hot. Madrid's great too. Rome wins hands down for wow factor for me.

moondog · 26/06/2006 21:58

Venice! - You just CAN'T do it with a pushchair so make the most of steps and jumping on/off boats not being a problem

(Also the amount of glass shops would make it a nightmare with any age kids!)

Wherever you go - enjoy! Wish my parents would offer to have ours for a whole weekend...

Wisp · 27/06/2006 12:46

Well its narrowed down to New York, San Francisco, or Barcelona !! Eeeeek
Only problem is we'd need more than 3 nights with 2 x 15 hour flights...hmmmmmm

OP posts:
nailpolish · 27/06/2006 13:27

i would choose barcelona

only having a short weekend away you dont want to spend hours and hours travelling

Wisp · 27/06/2006 13:35

Yeah but America- we would have to take 4 nights away
Hell there's always The US in another 12 years !
I'd be happy anywhere alone for some time with DH !
Now there's always camping......

I've done NY for the weekend - went out about 5pm Fri and left about 7pm Mon local time. Wasn't much use on Tuesday though! Barcelona's a great choice. If you have seats on the right you get a better view flying in.
