Shall I book a holiday to Greece for July?

I have just found an amazing deal on tinternet: £501 per adult for ten nights in a 4* hotel, transfers included.

AIBU to book it? My cursor is hovering over "Book Now" but I don't want to live to regret it...

I've been looking at Greece too. That's a good price but I'll pass on some advice I read in the paper last week re holidays to Greece this year. Make sure you buy insurance as soon as you book and ensure that it covers you for civil disruption etc just in case the Greek Traffic Controllers strike etc

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 21/05/2012 15:00

I wouldn't go to Greece in July personally as it will be unbearably hot. Some friends went one July and it was 45 degrees most days and they could only be outside if in the pool.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 21/05/2012 15:01

as long as you dont mind being a boil in the bag, lol....will be baking hot!

ENormaSnob · 21/05/2012 15:03

Where abouts buppy?

I bloody love Greece, especially in July/aug.

We are looking for next year but it's ££££ for the 5 of us.

mummymeister · 21/05/2012 15:04

are you worried about the financial situation OP. if so book it and dont buy your currency just yet!

Lueji · 21/05/2012 15:05

Just don't get any Euros yet. Wink

It depends on where the Hotel is.

Try to check that there are no works nearby and it's close to the beach.

Nancy66 · 21/05/2012 15:06

Where ? Mainland or island?

Annunziata · 21/05/2012 15:06

Oh, that's a toughy! Definitely make sure you have really comprehensive insurance. Maybe a complex would be better than an isolated hotel too?

Francagoestohollywood · 21/05/2012 15:08

YANBU. Where exactly? Wait to change the currency until last minute.

redrubyshoes · 21/05/2012 15:08

I am going in June/July. We have a villa with pool.

Can't wait. I shall buy you an Ouzo Buppers.

Press Add to Basket - you know you want to.

Francagoestohollywood · 21/05/2012 15:09

Gosh, it's Greece, not exactly some unruly country. You'll be safe, especially in the islands.

kaumana · 21/05/2012 15:11

I think the concern are if Greece leaves the Euro prior or during the trip.

holmesgirl · 21/05/2012 15:15

I'm booking for August - similar deal.

Goan goan goan! Grin

KatMumsnet · 21/05/2012 15:31

Hi, we've moved this into Shorthaul. Thanks.

BupcakesandCunting · 21/05/2012 15:51

I'm just a bit Confused about if Greece pull out of the Euro. The currency seems a bit unstable there atm

I was looking at Crete, ENorma. I love Greece too and we usually always do a Greek island holiday. Where are you going redruby

Franca, I'm not arsed about rioting etc, just that we might end up stranded if currency goes balls up.

Bups

I have heard that in the sky in Greece they will have that big round yellow thing in the sky - y'know what I mean? Gives out heat and turns you brown.

Last seen in the UK in 1976.

BupcakesandCunting · 21/05/2012 16:01

I know. That's the main draw innit?

OP posts:
dreamingofsun · 21/05/2012 16:08

we went last year. luckily after the airtraffic controllers went back to work and we had a hire car as the taxi drivers were all on strike (didn't realise at the time and we wouldn't have been able to get from airport).

very hot - too hot for a sundress or skirt during the evening and it was much cooler than previous week apparently.

so if you like it hot, can live with a certain amount of uncertainty and you get good travel insurance i'd go for it - on one of the islands though where they will be geared towards tourists, not a big city.

dreamingofsun · 21/05/2012 16:10

oh and we had a couple of very short power cuts (these were being mentioned online before we went because some power workers were on strike). but if you go to greece you expect the odd power glitch anyway.

Francagoestohollywood · 21/05/2012 16:12

Bups, I know you are not worrying about rioting, I had the impression other posters were.
Not sure you'd risk to be stranded if the euro collapse when you are there. After all you are tourists, there is always a way back Grin!

kaumana · 21/05/2012 17:01

I wouldn't be worried about being stuck out there for a couple of days esp since you are booking a package but it would piss me right off if I was stuck here waiting to fly out!

Crete is nice. Or at least it was over 10 years ago, and it was May. It was hot then.
Unless things have changed a lot, be very careful driving.

redrubyshoes · 22/05/2012 08:58

Bups

I am going to Kefalonia.
