...dd has chicken pox. she's been ill for a couple of days, but the spots came out today. ds hasn't caught it yet.

and we're supposed to be flying to the uk next thurs. If i have to I can fly with just dd, and dh can look after ds. obviously it would be better if all of us could come though.

this is what ryanair have to say

is there any chance we can go or shall I just cancel the flights now do you think? bear in mind this is ryanair so I will not get a great deal by cancelling, but could book our next hol or something.

I am SO dissapointed. it's for a family wedding and I was really looking forward to it. so was dd. ds probably was, but he can't tell me yet.

he may not catch it, is it ds that you are worried about?

SenoraPostrophe · 16/02/2006 19:43

yes, mostly. although according to those rules, if dd gets a new spot tomorrow she can't go.

the thing is, if ds doesn't get it between now and when we go, that means he might get it in the uk and then we'd be "stranded". don't know if dh would agree to going in that case.

Hulababy · 16/02/2006 19:43

He may not get it.

How would Ryan Air know if it has been 7 days since the last spot? Children are not infectious as soon as all the spots have scabbed and no fresh batches are coming. If DD is at that stage, I'd take her.

tiredemma · 16/02/2006 19:45

and tbh, following the documentary on ryanair the other night, I highly doubt that they will be checking how old his scabs are- they dont check passports!!

SenoraPostrophe · 16/02/2006 19:46

I wouldn't put a strip search past them...

OK, I should have said if she gets a new spot ON HER FACE tomorrow - doc says it usually is 7 days for them to dry out.. But OTOH I don't really want to fly if there's a real risk that some old woman who hadn't had it could die of shingles the next week. not sure if that's a real risk or not.

Might he really not get it at all? I thought it was a dead cert

SenoraPostrophe · 16/02/2006 19:48

oh yes, if my worry sounds over the top, it's because I'm also prgnant and this will be our last but one trip home in a long time.

no, ds2 had it just before xmas ( broke out about 2 days before we were off to center parcs- we were frantic) no other child around him who hadnt had chicken pox before caught it, either during the contagious period, or once the spots had started to scab over- and he was in FT nursery right up until the day he broke out in spots.

RedRidingHood · 16/02/2006 19:55

Hope you don't mind me being devils advocate but a colleague of mine had shingles when I was 7 1/2 months pregnant. I had no chickenpox immunity so had to take the risk of 2 large phials of immunoglobulin in my backside just to be on the safeside - there was a risk to my dd who luckily turned out OK.

Fingers crossed there will be no more spots though.

MaggieT · 16/02/2006 20:13

Get a hat and some make up for them

SenoraPostrophe · 16/02/2006 20:45

ok so I've just looked it up on nhs direct. they say it's only contagious for 5 days after the rash first appears (so before they've all scabbed). dd def ok, but i will need a docs note.

the incubation period is 10-21 days, most infectious day the day before the rash appears. that means ds will probably get his rash between the 25th and the 8th march. we fly back on the 27th (12 days after most infectious day). should we risk it?

tiredemma · 16/02/2006 20:47

SP- i would.

no advice pn chicken pox but couldnt let you whispered news pass without a big

morningpaper · 16/02/2006 20:59

SP I didn't know you were pregnant! COngrats! Wow, you will have to let me know how it goes with 3 and then I can decide if I want to totally copy your life or not.

SenoraPostrophe · 16/02/2006 21:01

i wondered if anyone would notice!

OP posts:
popsycalindisguise · 16/02/2006 21:02

oh yes!!!

morocco · 16/02/2006 21:05

hiya sp
how's it all going?
it sounds like dd won't be contagious anyway so flight out sounds Ok.
huge congrats!

morningpaper · 16/02/2006 21:08

hehe! How pg are you? Is it all going okay? How old are your other 2?

SenoraPostrophe · 16/02/2006 21:31

well, it's ds I'm worried about now. as itgoes I wouldn't mind having to stay for an extra 5 days, but I suspect our bank account would mind.

mp - ds is 2, dd is 3 (nearly 4). 13 weeks preg, so will have 0,2 and 4. i'm quite pleased with that, but dreading travel

OP posts:
WestCountryLass · 16/02/2006 23:00

You should definitely go. He may not get it and imagine how you would feel if you don't go and he doesn't? Go, go, go!

SenoraPostrophe · 17/02/2006 09:52

good news! doc says he can have the jab. presumably it's the immunpglobin thing redridinghood mentioned. dd got it from school, he doesn't go to school, therefore as long as he gets it today he should be able to come. I am so releived.

OP posts:
colditz · 17/02/2006 09:58

SenoraPostrophe, did not know you were pregnant, congratulations!

SorenLorensen · 17/02/2006 10:01

I only just saw this, SP - bummer about dd having the pox.

And you're PREGNANT? WOW!

(SP mentioned it on another thread and no-one noticed - she was a bit put-out )

JanH · 17/02/2006 10:07

She mentioned it on the due-in-Aug thread and they noticed!

Glad you are sorted out, SP, I hope DD will be feeling fine by then.

SorenLorensen · 17/02/2006 10:09

OK, only people due in August noticed
