Spending the day in London on a Sunday with a 3 year old and 6 year old

Off up to London for the day in a couple of weeks. We have a party to go to between 3pm-6pm, I thought it would be nice to drive up in the morning, get into London about 10 ish, do something nice with the girls then have lunch and go to party.

The only think I can think of is the zoo which dh is not keen on.

Any other suggestions? I will be about 30 wks pg and waddling so don't want to walk far, although the girls will have steam to work off.

South Ken - museums
Covent Garden
Problem is it's a bit cold for the outdoors stuff right now (or you have to have a wet weather plan!)

London Aquarium? (next to London Eye).

Coram's fields is fantastic playground only for kids and accompanying aduts, but it might be a bit nippy in Feb. Near British Museum.

cupcakes · 28/01/2006 10:18

Science Museum - my children loved the basement. Might be called the Garden?

Jasnem · 28/01/2006 10:18

Zoo will be cold...and expensive.
Natural History museum is great (and free). There are bits small people can do - water play type stuff, and the dinosaurs are great. How old are your girls? Mine are 5&6 now and loved it from about 2, but some kids are scared by the dinosaurs.

Jasnem · 28/01/2006 10:20

Sorry, I see how old they are...obviously didn't read title properly

Science Museum

dd1 would love nat history museum but dd2 is utterly wet and a weed and professes to hate anything to do with dinosaurs and volcanoes.

The Garden

cupcakes · 28/01/2006 10:22

ds liked the Natural History Museum but it scared dd (2) and she couldn't be calmed till we took her to see the stuffed panda (!).

Enid · 28/01/2006 10:23

that looks great cupcakes but it finishes on 29 Jan, we are going on Feb 12

I will look and see what else is on though as dd1 would love that with dh and I can sit in the cafe with dd2

big fan of the V and A here. They have activity packs which my girls love and it's so civilised compared with the Natural History or Sciene Museums which are horrendously crowded. But, tbh, if you are going to a party at 3 you need somethnig convenient for your party dont you? If you over-extend yourself you'll spend half the time getting stressed about where to have lunch and making it to teh party on time (I would anyway). Where's the party?

cupcakes · 28/01/2006 10:27

excellent

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 28/01/2006 10:27

zoo's too big and expensive if yuo're not spending all daythere

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 28/01/2006 10:28

lots of cross posting going on...

Enid · 28/01/2006 10:28

don't really want to go to a gallery as I spend all day in one at work

party is in Ladbroke Grove.

At the risk of sounding terrifically lacking in culcha, mine always love going to Hamleys, especially if you agree to get them a tiny present. I doubt that it would be your dh's idea of heaven though I agree that the Science Museum is ace.

Enid · 28/01/2006 10:32

well we are even worse as mine love Harrods

trying to stop spending money on Barbie though

I don;t think of teh V and A as a gallery. Last time went the girls got this back pack with great activities in - eg match the photos of museum staff in bizarre positions to statutes on display, design an emperor's robe with little velcro symbols to stick on, use stickers to design an Indian stone window and colour it in. The Science museum and NH are great too though - perhaps more exciting but a bit headache inducnig for grown ups. Any of the 3 wold bereasonably convenient for Ladbroke Grove anyway

suzywong · 28/01/2006 10:34

Harrods it is then

have a proper ice cream soda at the soda fountain and a small present and go to Ladbroke Grove in a hailed black cab.

God that's made me homesick.

More beer

Enid · 28/01/2006 10:35

cool

so that is arrival at Harrods for Krispy Kremes and coffee
toy dept
V and A or Science Museum

now I need a lunch place pref in Notting Hill

we will be driving around

OP posts:
Enid · 28/01/2006 10:36

actually forget lunch we won't have time

we'll go to cafe in museum or wagamamas if time

BIL is a chef so there is bound to be food at party

OP posts:
tamum · 28/01/2006 10:36

I was wondering about Harrods too suzywong (god, I'm so shallow). I just remember growing up in the depths of the country and going to Birmingham to visit my grandparents and the absolute thrill of escalators.... sad, eh.

I can see the Barbies might be a problem

Enid · 28/01/2006 10:37

they LOVE it

yes the escalators are fab

dd1 loves the food hall

we all love the doughnuts

and they have goggle country children eyes at the toy dept
