Any Dublin hotel recommendations?

I'm currently trying to organise a couple of nights in Dublin as a 70th birthday present for the in-laws. Any nice central hotel recommendations would be much appreciated.

lots of money
the merrion - fab gift for them. right in the centre, doing some good offers but are 5 star.
jurys in ballsbridge or berekly court as well.
the westbury off grafton st
all kinda old school but very nice .

Roobie · 10/01/2006 21:48

They are quite old-school themselves and would probably be a bit fazed by any of the real glitzy hotels. Something traditional but 'nice' would be ideal

The Gresham, stayed there one night aeons ago. (hope ive got the name right - think so). Felt seriously old school and really, really nice. We were in a sort of suite thing (get me - xh's expense account) but that was up a weird extremely steep stairway so not recommended. Very central soa sk for a quiet room.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 10/01/2006 21:58

Not the Gresham, O'Connell Street is very rough at night.

Roobie · 10/01/2006 21:59

Just been reading about the Gresham - seems good but some mixed reviews. It's really hard when you're booking for someone else isn't it - I don't want them to end up with a real dog of a hotel!

I'm off to Dublin later this month. If your budget can stretch how about four seasons or The Westin?

hermykne · 10/01/2006 22:03

roobie
the westbury is perfect if you want to pay that kinda money. my dh's uncle is regular there and he is old school. all very traditional service but very handily positioned for shopping, walkig to musuems restaurants etc.

the westbury

links u to other hotels owned by the same group , jurys

hermykne · 10/01/2006 22:04

roobie not the gresham , for their age, its not that safe at night and a bit loutish.

swedishmum · 10/01/2006 23:51

4 seasons too far out and a bit Disney - fifty cent stayed there a while ago when dh there. Westin bit more traditional - my parents would like it and good position. There one St Patricks Day and got a fab view. Conrad is nice N of St Stephen's Green - bit far out though. Not stayed at Westbury but sil rated it and position is good.

Mishmash · 10/01/2006 23:52

Berkley Court or if you want location just of St. Stephens Green then I would recommend the Conrad or the Westbury

MrsSpoon · 10/01/2006 23:54

We stayed \here{http://www.redcowhotel.com\Red Cow} when we visited Dublin, it was a really nice hotel I remember getting the most fantastic nights sleep (although that could have been because it was my first night away from DS1, age 9 months).

MrsSpoon · 10/01/2006 23:55

Red Cow

The suggestions seem like really great hotels but unfortunately a bit too pricey (tight sons!). I think I'll look for an upmarket townhouse hotel.

Blimey, this has worried me now. I've booked us into the Gresham for our anniversary weekend in Feb. Is it really that bad/rough round that bit of Dublin? Thought it was quite central .

Gloworm · 11/01/2006 12:11

laterooms are great for finding rooms if you are on a budget.

Gloworm · 11/01/2006 12:12

in fact, even if you are looking for something posh you can still get a very good reduction on price here.

sandyballs · 11/01/2006 16:53

Anyone got any good news about the Gresham? I'm getting worried now

hermykne · 11/01/2006 17:11

sandyballs, the gresham is on the main throughfare which is being remodelled presently, but therE ARE LOTS OF DIFFERENT BUSINESSES on it from hotels to cinemas to department stores.plus a continuous stream of buses, i think its a car free zone just buses and taxis now.

in this case for roobie its not a great spot for older couples esp in their 70's just for that safety aspect, those in the 40's 30's younger can walk alot quicker . and not such an easy target.

o connell is very central and henry st has lots of shops , 15mins walk is grafton st . so u are centrally located.

have a nice trip

hermykne · 11/01/2006 18:22

my mil and her 3 sisters stayed there about a month ago anf it was perfect for them. rooms great but they didnt eat there, just wanted to try other restaurants.

Roobie · 11/01/2006 20:45

I've reserved one of the mezzanine rooms at the Pembroke Townhouse, Ballsbridge (Pembroke Road). It looks lovely on their website (currently down so can't link). I realise it's a bit out of the city centre but it seems a nice area and they like walking. Can anyone confirm how long it would take to walk into the city centre? Or indeed, have I made a mistake and it is really a fleapit?!

OP posts:
hermykne · 11/01/2006 20:48

robie i was ging to post u a link for it
its literally a 7/8 min walkto stephens greeen and top of grafton st ( where the shops are)

nice part of town

Roobie · 11/01/2006 20:50

That's a relief! I had checked out tripadvisor.com and the reviews were generally excellent except for a couple of really bad ones which I decided to ignore.
