Is it really safe to visit New York after 9/11

Just a thought......
I would love to go and visit NY and whilst there pay my respects to all the people who were killed in 9/11 and see the wonderful waterfalls they have built there at Ground Zero.

Whats the general consensus ?

I've been there and more than once since 9/11; of course you should visit!!.

Would suggest you fly into Newark rather than JFK though (JFK airport is a real dump).

bibbitybobbityhat · 14/09/2011 18:11

I think you would have heard on the news if any further terrorist activity had taken place in New York since 9/11.

booyhoo · 14/09/2011 18:14

no it's not safe, no-one has visited it in 10 years. in fact no-one even lives there anymore. Hmm

happypotter · 14/09/2011 18:15

I live in Long Island and go into Manhattan regularly. It's a wonderful place to visit. I feel no less safe here than I did when I lived in London.

Hulababy · 14/09/2011 18:18

I have been twice, both since 9/11.

First time was for a week in May 2009. We stayed on Broad Channel and travelled in by subway each day. We went with friends and had three children with us, two aged 7y and one aged almost 4y.

Second time we went iin July 2010, for 5 days and stayed in a hotel in Manhattan. We went with PILs and took DD who was then 8y.

Both times we found NYC very friendly and we really enjoyed our visits. I would definitely return. TBH we found it far friendly than any other big city we've been too, much friendlier than London. Nothing was too much trouble. If you stoppd with a map open someone would ask if they could help, on the subway people man offered their seats to us every single time, a woman went completely out of her way to show us which station we needed, another man directed us to a preferred restaurant when he saw us looking at an alternative (he was right!), etc. I never once felt at risk or even alarmed.

Both times we did go to Ground Zero, although at that point the memorial wasn't yet finished. We saw it being built and saw the temporary memorials around the place and in the nearby church. Even around the site there was no worries regarding security.

I would definitely recommend a trip!

Why wouldnt it be safe? Confused

Have to say when we visited earlier this year, I didnt give our safety a second thought.

mumofsoontobelawstudent · 14/09/2011 22:32

oh FFS. Are you saying you wouldn't travel to London after 7/7? Or ever go to Bali in case of a bombing or Thailand/Maldives in case of a Tsunami or Japan/China in case of an Earthquake? Hmm

suebfg · 14/09/2011 22:37

I was there on 09/11, first visit to New York, having arrived the evening of the 10th. I would feel safe going to New York again though.

BOOYHOO ....sad sarcasm. . .Sensible opinions were preferable love.

Are you a bloke? I've never come across a woman using 'love' in that way.... Shock

Hullygully · 15/09/2011 10:22

no

Badtasteflump · 15/09/2011 10:28

Of course you should go! If you start thinking that way you'll never leave the house - oh but actually you shouldn't be there either - have you seen the statistics for accidents in your own home?

Just go and stop worrying.

ReelAroundTheFountain · 15/09/2011 10:31

What an odd question Confused

nametapes · 15/09/2011 18:11

not at all..... wouldnt you think about it if you were travelling over to NY.??

ednurse · 15/09/2011 18:13

'love'?

why do people use 'love' when trying to annoy someone? it's such a silly PA response that everyone sees straight through.

LadyMary · 19/09/2011 19:59

Of course. People still live there in their millions, you know Hmm

Blu · 19/09/2011 20:08

I really wouldn't think twice.

DP took DS. I didn;t think twice. I worried that DP would march on ahead in crowds and Ds would get lost, I worried that DP would forget that vegetables are necessary occasionally, I worried that they would spend zillions on ridiculous gadgets and technology, but it didn't cross my mind that it was 5 years after a terrorist attack.

But you seem quite caught up in thinking about the attack - I wouldn't want to go with a view to paying my respects to those who died any more than I have visited the tune stations targetted in the bomb attacks here.

Did you know someone who died in that attack?

MrsCornish · 06/10/2011 21:22

It's as safe as it ever was - i'm a nervous traveller but i certainly wouldn't hesitate to go to New York, at least with regard to terrorist threat.

TimeWasting · 06/10/2011 21:26

The likelihood of terrorists crashing two aeroplanes into the Twin Towers is lower now than it was then.

AnxiousElephant · 06/10/2011 21:40

Well erm as safe as it is living in the UK after all the IRA and islamic militant bombings we have had over the years!

Kiwinyc · 01/11/2011 16:59

I've been there 3 times this year and will be going again just after Xmas. Its practically my second home and I've never thought twice about 'safety'. Its no dangerous there than anywhere else.

PotteringAlong · 01/11/2011 17:07

By that logic you'd never go anywhere that had ever been attacked by terrorists... You live in the uk (I assume). Have you never been to London? Manchester? Birmingham?

New York is a fab city, get yourself there!

BarnMummy · 01/11/2011 17:15

Can't really believe you are asking.

A friend of ours was asked this summer if it was safe for her prospective son-in-law's family to visit London - they live in Johannesburg, often considered the murder capital of the world...how would you have answered them?
