Mark Warner Egypt

chrissiejames · 28/10/2005 11:19

Has anyone been to the Mark Warner in Egypt? We are looking for some winter sun (Jan) with 1 and 2 year olds. Sri Lanka seems a bit far (11 hour flight) and I am put off by jabs and malaria.
Thanks!

Oo...ooo..we are booked for December - what's it like

Please tell us......please

motheroftwoboys · 31/10/2005 11:24

We just booked for New Year yesterday. Going on 29th from Gatwick for 9 nights. Can't wait!!!!! Went to Paleros for a week in the summer and I think we will end up going back next summer as it is inclusive water skiing and wake boarding and DS1 got totally addicted (and was really good). We will be Mark Warnered out!!!

katymac · 31/10/2005 14:07

Shall we meet on the 30th?

bluesky · 31/10/2005 20:42

OK, full report to follow:

had a great time BUT was really hacked off that the pool was FREEZING.

The Intercontinental and Mark Warner brochure both say that it is heated, but it wasn't and hasn't been since Mark Warner started there 8 months ago.

It is a HUGE white elephant of a hotel in the middle of nowhere, amazing, money poured and poured into it. Mark Warner have a complete wing and have built kids club behind it. It works well alongside the rest of the hotel, mainly because there are hardly any other guests. Really strange.

Rooms are marble, clean, we had a HUMUNGOUS suite that could have had my sons entire class camping in there on camp beds! Air conditioning, and each day they would deliver 2 large bottles of water. Telly delivers cartoon network!

Mark Warner have a reception area at the bottom of the wings stairs, manned for a couple of hours in the morning and evening. Other than that there is no 'central' feel to Mark Warner like there is at the other resorts. As mArk Warner don't run the bar, there is no social atmosphere, they had a quiz night one night. No mixing at meal times, unless you make friends and fix a date. So that social side of Mark Warner isn't there, which some people prefer or not ...

Food is fantastic. The restaurant that is included in the price has the most amazing variety of foods, our picky picky son could always find something. Huge huge buffet, lovely fruit and lovely cakes (!!) wide selection of hot foods and a chef always there making up pastas and sauces of your choice, or pancakes and waffles at breakfast time. You can sit inside or out. Really good place.

If you want to venture across to another restaurant, we tried the lebanese, you pay a supplement at the end of the meal. They have a trio of musicians to create an atmosphere. Italian was good, HUGE pizzas. We didnt get to the seafood. Big bar with big telly and the most amazing disco where they do the welcome talk and kids show. Hieroglyphics and mummies in neon round the room, very wacky!

The beach is long and clean, because there are no other guests except Mark Warner, we all managed to get a sun bed. Sea was warm. Not many fish. You need to go further afield on one of the snorkelling trips to see coral/fish.

Loads of boats, windsurfing, canoes and kitesurfing! Which brings me to the wind, IT WAS SOOOOO WINDY, I hated the first two days. But it dies down in the afternoon and you get used to it. Great for the water enthusiasts, and then the beginner sailors have a calmer sea in the afternoon.

The Egyptian men who run the excursions are lovely. Can really recommend the half day to Sharm-el-Naga beach for snorkelling, it takes 15-20mins in a 4x4, you leave at 8.30am. There are clean loos, snorkelling equipment, cafe and little shop, a camel too! But the good thing is Mark Warner can get there early as so close, by 10am, the coach loads were piling in, and it got really busy, we then left at 12.45, perfect. Lots of coral and amazing Finding Nemo type fish.

Lots of other guests did go on the Luxur trip and Cairo trip, Luxor involved a 3hr journey there and a couple of hours at temple etc, then long trek home. Cairo involved a 4.30am departure and aeroplane.

Kids club were 100% fantastic, wonderful nannies, great itineraries, lovely for any age. when out and about they do lots of loud singing so you know if your child is about to appear!! Binoculars very useful for keeping your eye on them from the sun lounger when they are canoeing or sailing with their group! Club is 9-1pm and 3pm til later (depending on their age) Kids supper was again good. The nannies do it, you don't even have to go!

The swimming pool is massive and fantastic, waterfalls, bridges, caves, but has become a lake in the middle of the resort really, as no one swims, the occassional desparate child, but then after getting brave up to their knees, jumps out again. It could be wonderful with the loungers all around it and the bar/ice creams nearby. (The owner won't heat it as he doesnt have enough people in the hotel). We were there on Mark Warners busiest week, so thought it appalling that they hadn't put it on. Mark Warner are stuck really. I know they are applying pressure. My point was us brits like a warm pool on our holiday, and if you are spending £3-4 grand on a holiday you expect one too, ESPECIALLY if it says it is going to be in the brochure.

Also took, all our tennis racquets and trainers, but the courts don't exist either. There is a sort of grass one around the corner apparently!?

Phew ..... so yes we had a good time but no we wouldn't go back, purely because of the pool issue and the feeling that the hotel owner needs to get alot of issues sorted, bizarre place.

Think it is a good concept for Mark Warner to try though. The Paleros guy is now out there running it, for any of you Paleros people.

Try and get small demonination notes for tips, ie your housekeeping guy on the last day, excursions, the chap and the driver etc. Beware at the airport, they offer to get your trolley and carry your bags, but they just want your money, same for toilet, and same for the play area in Hurghada departure lounge.

On the plane Excel sell headphones for £2.50 onboard for the radio and movie/programmes, but your own will work. They sell small tubs of pringles and chocolate bars before the meals come through. They will try and sell you mineral water for arriving at Hurghada, but Mark Warner put water on your coach seat.

Hope this helps, I know when I was about to go, I felt I was going blind as there has been no feedback anywhere on this site or others about this resort.

PS: Didnt hear about any bad tummies. Mosquitoes were OK as they have drained all the ponds, there are many ponds!! they had a huge mozzy problem. Don't know what they are planning to do with all the holes now!

PPS: Mickey the Camel is available to ride up and down the beach every day! Don't wait for the last day when he becomes very popular!

katymac · 01/11/2005 07:54

WOW - loads to think about!!!!

motheroftwoboys · 01/11/2005 09:42

checked on this as soon as I sat down at my desk at work!! Thanks for that Bluesky. As you said, lots to think about. Katymac - what age are your children and where are you flying from? do you live in London? Have you been to Mark Warner before? Maybe we should cat? Good to hear the Paleros guy is running it. We were at Paleros in the summer and had a great time but with the usual small gripes. Definitely will go back as DS1 - 15 loved wake boarding and was v. good at it. DS2 - 13 just had a great time. I was travelling without DH as he was in rehab but he is out now and we are so looking forward to having this holiday together. Hope the pool is warmer though! Maybe we should contact MW and say that we have heard there is a problem and see what happens. We have booked 2 x rooms, we could have had a "panaramic suite" - as they called it but prefer having the two bathrooms and as kids come in so very much later than us they won't keep us awake. Obvious other advantages of 2 rooms!! Last night in Paleros Tom - DS15 and the rest of the Indies spent the night sleeping out on the site then they went swimming at 7! This must be deeply boring to non MW bores so will shut up. Contact me if you like Kaymac, I am a newbie so not sure how to do this.

bluesky · 01/11/2005 10:22

motherof2boys, it would be worth you calling, definitely. We are going to follow it up with Head Office.

katymac i remember you asking about temperatures a while ago; in the evenings I was in a little top, but only on one night did I wish I had a wrap or cardy. I imagine Dec will be very similar.

katymac · 01/11/2005 10:25

You better contact me ( you haven't enable the CAT option)

Look at the top of the page and choose Contact Another Talker.

I'm talking to MW as I type this
KMc

katymac · 01/11/2005 12:50

MW say that the tennis courts are out of action.
That there is another swimming pool in a courtyard and that it is heated.

My DH plays tennis twice a week - he is not going to be pleased

And if we cancel we loose 33% bu&&er, bu&&er, Bu&&er

motheroftwoboys · 01/11/2005 13:31

I am now enabled!! Have also been on to MW re the pool and they said that if they got enough feedback they would try and get something done so "I registered my concern" - anyone else going (or who has been) please do so. Personally I am a beach person not a pool person so it doesn't bother me much and am FAR to lazy to play tennis on holiday. Did it on first MW in searing heat, never again! Do hard work on sun lounger managing to avoid all water sports and watch rest of family doing things. Don't cancel Katymac, I am sure it will be great. However you could threaten ....... !!!!

I have threatened...but got nowhere

bluesky · 01/11/2005 17:06

the other pool is NOT heated, it belongs to the health spa, so even if it was heated i can't believe they want children shrieking around in there.

I don't believe they will heat the big pool, if there is enough pressure, the owner may perhaps open the smaller pool (cheaper!)

katymac our point with them is, that we bought a holiday that included tennis and a heated swimming pool, they didn't fulfil that part of the deal. (can't see how they can then charge a cancellation fee). Speak to someone higher up. Keep at them, poor Mark Warner boss, knew me and my room number by the end of the week!

My other worry is, if the intercontinental pull their finger out and get more people into the other 300 rooms, and the pool remains unheated, then EVERYONE will be down at the beach, and there isn't enough room, nor will you get a lounger. If the pool was heated, people would spread themselves between the two areas.

katymac · 01/11/2005 17:15

Who should I contact do you think - Do we have any rights?

I don't want a holiday with half the stuff not there

bluesky · 01/11/2005 18:47

Managing director is worth a start!

katymac · 01/11/2005 22:06

A few questions tho' Blue Sky

  1. how old ae your child(ren) & did they enjoy the club
  2. did they join you for evening meals
  3. is the hand over to the kids club go smoothly each session
  4. is snorkling hard
  5. is there anywhere we can go dancing

Thanks

bluesky · 01/11/2005 22:06

i notice that tennis has now been removed from the website ...

katymac · 01/11/2005 22:14

Did we x post?

bluesky · 01/11/2005 22:18

Hi Katymac, was just about to go to bed, but here you go:

1)I had one in minis and one in juniors, 5 and 9. Both at the top age range of their groups, but they sub divide even then, so they were with 6 or so children of similar age. They had a great time. The youngest occassionally didn't return after lunch, but that was because he wanted to come sailing with us, and we wanted to spend time with him! Whereas the 9 year old obviously couldnt wait to be rid of us!! Loads of friends, and they think the nannies are really cool and fun. When asked their favourite part of the holiday was Kids Club!

  1. Hand over is easy-peasy, they have a peg with their name on, the nannies are always there and smiley, and you have a signing in sheet. If you don't fancy them swimming from 10-11am (because your child REALLY doesn't want to go because its FREEZING) then you can collect them and sign them out, Likewise on the beach the nanny carries the signing in and out sheet.

  2. Not sure how I mixed up my paragraphs but anyway, no we ate separately, because we wanted to eat later in peace! Lunchtime was our family meal. Mini club eat at 5pm, either with the nannies or you can go too. Juniors eat at 6pm, you collect them at 5.30pm, quick shower, off they go, then they can play games until 8pm. We did see children eating with parents in the main restaurant early evening, think Cafe Stella opens at 6.30pm.

  3. The Mark Warner beach shack has snorkelling equipment, it is fine, if you just relax!! There is a designated swimming area on the beach, so you know you won't bump into any boats! There are a few fish. But try and practice at the start of the week and then go on the half day Sharm el Nag trip to see the 'Finding Nemo' type brightly coloured fish. They go every day.

  4. There is a nightclub, which you will see on night one for the welcome talk. It opens at 10.30 I think, and is very quiet!! DJ in a booth that hangs from the ceiling! But you never know, you may be there during a particularly dancy week!

Hope that helps!

bluesky · 01/11/2005 22:19

spooky, yes we did cross post!

You will have a great holiday.

katymac · 01/11/2005 22:21

whether it is a dancy week on not DH & I will be dancing - we will probably be the first on the dance floor (if i can persuade dh) as we really like dancing - hope I can persuade them to play decent music

Thanks for answering the kids club stuff is very interesting as DD is (or will be) 8

katymac · 01/11/2005 22:22

we have never done a kids club or this sort of holiday before so we are quite scared/nervous

bluesky · 02/11/2005 08:28

DD aged 8 will have such fun. They structure the day into one hour periods, so they don't feel bored and worry about things, they keep on the move, they balance the day with busy outdoor things and calm indoor things out of the heat. The club is air conditioned.

Juniors have a large room, lots of games, and a lovely soft reading corner.

An example of their day could be:

9-10: Beachfront - 3 of them in a boat with instructor.
10-11:Shell collecting
11-12:Show rehearsal
12-1: Pool Fun

1-3: Lunch with you
3-4: Paint the nanny (great fun!!)
4-5: Kwik Cricket, on club lawn
5-5.30: a group game

5.30: collect
6pm: return them for supper
until 8: they do games like jenga, pictionary etc

The show is on thurs night so they rehearse every day.

With the collected shells they made a photo frame. They were read a story. Huge variety of things.

Our son is a quiet worrying soul, yet because of the structure, variety and fun, he was really really happy there.

katymac · 02/11/2005 09:22

Hmmm - DD is already sailing solo, I'm not sure how she will deal with "sharing" with 2 children and an adult
