but i can get a nice break for all of us.

The answer is NO.
Both my closest school mums have just booked to bodrum and marmaris, in the last 2 weeks, for the summer hols.
The whole situation is totally different in Turkey, compared to Egypt and TUnisia, Your fears are unfounded.
Don't worry. Book. Enjoy.

fivegomadindorset · 28/02/2011 21:50

Yes, I would book.

DrSeuss · 28/02/2011 21:57

Love, love, love Turkey! Went for the first time in 2009, as it was the cheapest option and recently booked for the third time. The Turks are so friendly, they worship children, the food is good, the weather is excellent. I have never felt at risk or nything other than welcome.
This place is good

sorry, no was in reference to, 'risk of terrorism'.
yes yes, book, book.

ThePathlessPath · 01/03/2011 14:58

Thank you all feel silly now for asking - the thing that made it a reality is that I used to live in London and that was at risk and probaby still is. You have to live it not be scared.

Have decided to book and take out travel insuarnce and check the advice before we have to go out. In case things change.

thanks

You should not worry about a holiday to Turkey, as already said, don't compare it to the rest of that region.

Also to help anyone to decide where and when to visit Turkey, I recommend www.weatherinturkey.org.uk. Yes it is a bit of a spam (sorry) but it is a site owned by a friend that I found really helpful because they show you the weather in Turkey by month and region. I was pregnant last time I went and I didn't want to go when it was too hot. We went in May and it was just perfect, oh and Marmaris is great.

fifi25 · 01/03/2011 17:14

Dont worry about Turkey its a stable country and Marmaris is fab, im jel as this year im of to park resorts Envy

Nefret · 01/03/2011 21:55

Firstly there is no greater risk of terrorism in Turkey than anywhere else, probably less than in the UK actually.

Secondly, the problems in the Middle East at the moment have no relevance to Turkey whatsoever. Tunisia, Egypt and Libay are all dictatorships whereas Turkey is a democratic country with general and local elections, specifically what those in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya have been fighting for!

Also Turkey isn't an Arab country.

There is no reason not to book turkey for your holiday, we used to live there and still go back every year for our holidays. I must admit I don't like Marmaris but it is very popular and the Turks are very friendly and welcoming, they particularly love babies and children.

Hope you have a great time !

MarioandLuigi · 02/03/2011 12:05

I would book Turkey in a heartbeat - its fab :)

MrsChemist · 03/03/2011 14:20

Oh, thanks OP, I was going to start a similar thread. I've been worrying about staying in Turkey after reading the foreign office website. Good to know people like it.

Why everlong...curious Smile

DrSeuss · 03/03/2011 18:35

Also curious. I've heard Marmaris is kind of like Benidorm inparts, sun, beer and Brits. But we've had a great time at family oriented resorts elsewhere. The Turks' attitude to kids is a major plus.

fifi25 · 03/03/2011 19:43

I loved Marmaris, I wouldnt say it was like Benidorm at all. Its a busy resort and very commercialised, great for shopping which i love. After being stuck in the middle of nowhere on a 5 (more like 2) resort with disgusting food and nowhere else to go (boring) Marmaris seems like heaven. Depends what you want out of a holiday. I hate lying by the pool all day.

I think the harbour side is full of youngins as thats where all the nightclubs are. Its a huge resort and we were at the icmeler end.

I never had any problems with my daughters, they got spoilt rotten of the Turks who were extremely helpful and friendly compared in stark contrast to the Bulgarians Shock

fifi25 · 03/03/2011 19:45

*i meant after being stuck in Elenit, Bulgaria

katiewins22 · 03/03/2011 22:59

Well - we have booked week in Icmeler for May Half-Term - we were told it was quie. Not bothered about current situations in other places as I have Turkish friend at work and from what I understand from her and just general awareness Turkey is very forward thinking and no unrest there.

Just intrigued by EVERLONGS comment. You can't come on and say "It's great but I wouldn't take children there" - and then disappear. Come on - give a reason. If it is valid then can my children come and stay with you for the week while I lounge around in the sunshine Wink - K.

fifi25 · 03/03/2011 23:21

Icemeler markets fab, i went along a few times but never stayed there, All you here is 'cheaper than Asda' 'cheaper than primark' and the best one was 'cheaper than Netto' Grin I love haggling for shoes and bags, Im so jel [envious]

fifi25 · 03/03/2011 23:23

bloody hell Envy

Quattrocento · 03/03/2011 23:27

Blimey, I thought I was over-protective ...

This is a joke, isn't it? Now if you'd said Libya, I might've taken you seriously

Kiwinyc · 03/03/2011 23:54

yes, although i'd pick the area carefully, its not all created equal. That said we loved our week nr Bodrum with Crystal Travel one year, with a 5 and 2yo.

But the summer months are INCREDIBLY hot. May half term is perfect though.

DrSeuss · 04/03/2011 09:28

I love the way the market traders speak English. I always wonder if there's a language school somewhere training them to say, "'Ello Darlin', lovely jubley, cheap as chips!" I shall be travelling to Side this year with a five year old and a three month old, both of whom will be worshipped by the Turkish staff as they do with all children.

Sidge · 04/03/2011 09:37

I didn't like Turkey much but didn't go to Marmaris.

fifi25 · 04/03/2011 10:01

I know one of the woman at the school went to one of the resorts beginning with a k, not sure which one but she hated it. From what ive been told Hisaronu, Marmaris, Side, Gumbet, Bodrum and Icemeler are all the more touristy type resorts. I would stick with them but research anything before you book. I know my Turkey worshipping mil has stayed in some dives but hey that can happen anywhere Smile

fifi25 · 04/03/2011 10:04

DrSeuss we used to laugh because my sil is well stacked and would always get hey Jordan 3 bags for £10. I had a habit of wearing an alice ban with big sunnies and got hey J-Lo 3 bags for £10 and then they would speak fluant Geordie ha ha

MrsChemist · 04/03/2011 10:30

I'll be staying in Yalikavak, it looks quite quiet, which is what I want.
